I have been having a terrible time writing a review for this book. Please, don’t get me wrong. It was phenomenal. And it left me feeling like a proper ending was delivered. But I’m finding it very difficult to let go of it and give a final review. I do so love them all!
I find it has left me very sad to see them go. The characters and world that Debra Dunbar created in her Imp Series way outshines her other series. I know that’s probably not fair, but I am going to seriously miss Sam and Gregory and Snip and Nyalla, and oh, Lux! How I’m going to miss Lux! I’ll even miss Gimlet and Gabe and even Tasma and Doriel. Oh and how awfully ironic for Uriel to return just for the series to end. And the laughs! Oh good grief, how she portrayed Sam so that you couldn’t help but laugh at her antics. And her Lows? Let’s just say if her Lows joined with Minions we’d all be in serious trouble! Can you imagine?
Debra Dunbar, in other words, created such a massive, solid, believable world with characters that we all grew to love to read about, that we will all feel bereft not having them to love and laugh at and laugh with and cry with and fret with… And how difficult that is! To create a world so complete that your readers actually feel the loss when the series ends! I’m sure we’ll see more in novellas and shorts, but that’s not quite the same. Damn I’m going to miss them all!
It is a rarity to find an author that grabs me to such an extent that I’m truly upset when their series ends. Debra Dunbar is one of those authors. She has exceptional talent, and I can only hope that she uses that talent again at some point to create another world that is full of irony and upside down beliefs and characters that dig into our hearts to stay. I hope she will once again take on the typical antiquated beliefs of legend and religion and turn them on their heads for us; create us another universe that defies everything we believe to be true and crack us up in the process.
So Very Well Done, Debra Dunbar! I was hooked from day one and must now go through withdrawal. Your Imp series was one of a kind.
This is a very hard review to write… very hard, and primarily because this is the last of this series. Thank goodness it isn’t totally the last of the characters in it, I look forward to any time they pop up. Book 1 in this series was my first book by the author and I have been hooked ever since.
First, let me tell you what this book is not:
It is not a light, quick read. At least it was not quick for me, mainly because it is an involved plot/story with logs of interactions going on.
It is not a humorous story though it does have it’s funny scenes.
Now for what it is:
It is an in-depth, detail, well presented story that wraps up an incredible series, and it’s told by an excellent story teller.
It is the perfect ending to a long, wonderful story.
If you want a riveting tale of demons, a “once was” imp who is now The Iblis, angels, Arch Angels, Fallen Angels, Lows, and a few other interesting characters thrown in, this is your book. If you enjoy lots of twists and turns and unexpected events, this is your book. If you want a new, quiet book without having to put any effort into it… this is NOT your book. A quick word of caution: If you haven’t read books 1 thru 9, go back to the beginning; it will be worth every word you read getting here.
And that’s it, my last read in the Imp series… maybe. I probably will re-read them all whenever the time permits. Yes, they are that good – worth another go at it and not many books I read are worth that!
OMG!!! I can’t believe it’s over – NOOOOO!!!!! There’s still so much Dunbar could write about like about how all the races (angels, demons and humans) establish the new world order and all the chaos and mayhem that ensues. I am going to miss Sam and her band of misfits and knuckleheads.
