“The House” is a collection of short stories that ties in with the Pen Pals and Serial Killers series by Jo Michaels. You’ll find a couple of those characters named, and discover how one grew the teeth he used on the women he captured later.
NOTE: While The House may be read independently of the other books in the series, if you plan to read Intensification (book 3), do that first. This one contains spoilers for that tale.

This is the fourth book in the Pen Pals and Serial Killers Series. This collection includes five interconnected short horror stories: 1) The Butcher, 2) Marna, Fred, and Kimberly McDade, 3) Lacy Mae Ritter, 4) Mark and Olivia Cullpepper, and my favorite, 5) The Writer, the conclusion of this collection. This Series is original, dark, intense, creepy, and captivating. Julia Whelan did a great job with the narration. If you like horror stories, this collection is for you.
The House: A Killer Collection of Short Stories
Pen Pals and Serial Killers Book 4
By Jo Michaels
Narrated by Julia Whelan
Did you ever have that book you just can’t stop listening to? You hope no one calls, or comes into the office? That is this book. Original, suspenseful, horrific, and healing, it all comes alive in The House. Jo Michaels masterfully tells us this story from the point of view of the house, from new construction to occupants to shocking events, we feel everything the house goes through. Ingenious! I was completely captivated, feeling everything from being decorated to being desecrated, to finding the best fit. The stories are so addictive, I just had to find out what dreadful thing may happen next, to see if the next family would find their happiness or if they would meet their maker. All the feels, perfect for this time of year and I loved every second!
Julia Whelan is so good, and when she reads this story to us, you would think she is living it. I love her voices, her inflections and how she brings it all to life. Each story as good as the last, she fields the emotions of the house and gives it a reality you believe. A fantastic performance!
The House, wow. This was something else. She sure has seen more than her fair share of horrors. The idea behind this book was so original! I loved it.
I strongly suggest reading Intensification first. That is where I started, I think I am going to go back and read the other 2 books also. We heard the name Dr. Ward a few times, so I am guessing she was in the first 2 books, but all at once she wasn’t a huge character and you don’t HAVE to know who she is first. I was content with starting at book 3. I just want more now 🙂 Jo was a new to me author so I will for sure go look up her other work.
This book Jo wrote, well it is very unique. I have followed this series and loved each book Jo has written. Upon finishing The House I am just blown away. This is a helluva book. I highly recommend reading books 1 – 3 if you have plans to read this book. Trust me on this, you will thank me later.
The house has seen more horrors than one would know..
I love how different charterers all make appearances here and connect. We hear about Dr Victoria Ward and we learn more about Claude. The writer coming and putting it all together is pure evil genius!
These stories are not for the faint of heart. If you enjoy a good gripping, blood filled, suspenseful, thriller.. well then this is a series for you! I can’t say enough good about it. Jo is a mastermind and I sure hope she gives us more killers in the future.
