Another brilliant Uncanny gem…
Some truths are undeniable. One such truth is that the two authors who write the Uncanny Kingdom books will never let you down. If urban fantasy appeals to you at all, you should try one of their series set in the Uncanny Kingdom. They are all brilliant, full of action, loaded with unique and unforgettable characters, and are delightfully seasoned with snarky British humor that makes you laugh out loud. Fatal Moon, the second book of the Hexed Detective series, is no exception. While I do not believe you would be lost if you started with this story, to fully savor the nuances of the characters development and their relationships with one another, I would recommend reading Hexed Detective first. Rita Hobbs, having been hexed in the first book, is still invisible to the mundane (non-magical) world but is learning her way around the Uncanny (magical) community with all its zany inhabitants and insane disregard for basic physics. Always the detective, she is drawn into a murder investigation which requires her rapid introduction to the finer points of lycanthropy. Murder, madness, mayhem and even exorcism are now components of Rita’s typical workday. Can she stop the master werewolf from killing off all of Blackpool’s wizards? Can she find a way to nullify the hex that renders her invisible? Will her magic axe help her fight an evil angel? I am certainly looking forward to finding out what the authors have in store for Rita in the next story. My recommendation: clear a bit of time in your schedule to relax and enjoy this brilliant gem of urban fantasy.
If you choose to listen to the audiobook, be advised that the narrator, Millie Jones, is the perfect choice for Rita Hobbs and she does a fantastic job with all the other characters, as well. Her performance brings the story and the characters to life and enhances the overall enjoyment of the book.
While I did purchase a copy of this book, I was provided with the audiobook version by the authors and I am voluntarily offering my honest and unbiased review.
Detective Rita Hobbes is still running around, trapped in Blackpool by a hex, invisible to most, trying to figure out how to get un-hexed, and still solve the murders around her, even when magic complicates it all. She is a great character and so is Carlisle. (I’m still waiting to see who/what he is.) I enjoyed this story a lot and read through it quickly. On to the next one, hopefully to see what happens to her. Even if nothing does, the story lines can go on for quite a while and I will enjoy reading them all!
* I was given a copy of this for an honest [always] review *
Exciting, fast paced horror story with a healthy dose of humorous banter and great world-building. Be sure to read ‘Hexed Detective’ first, then read ‘Fatal Moon’. It picks up right where ‘Hexed Detective’ leaves off, with Dan Waterson dead and a ghost, and Rita still, as far as the ordinary world is concerned, doesn’t exist. Carlisle still wants his Artefact back from Rita. The Fallen Angel of Blackpool is still plotting its escape. Rita discovers the hex hadn’t just made people forget about her, it had changed the whole fabric of reality: made it as though she had never even existed. Enter Magda. Flashback to Hungary, 1900 for Magda’s story and how she became a hunter. Interlude with Carlisle. Then to 1943 and Magda”s miraculous escape. Interlude with Rita, Jane Bowen and Ellie Mason, victims of the Magician who served the Angel. On to 2006 briefly, then to the present, to tie up the interludes and flashbacks. A magician has been brutally murdered, torn apart. Magda seducess Ben Turner, to his immediate delight, but eventual dismay. In Blackpool, something savage, something evil, is killing people, especially magicians. Back to 2012 for more of Magda’s background. Back in the present, Rita briefly experiences what it’s like to become a werewolf. Meanwhile, Carlisle visits the City of the Dead, a terrifying experience, to bring back the ‘thing’ that can kill an Angel. Magda and Rita finally meet. Rita has to go to an Uncanny Exorcist as a result. A little later she meets up with Waterson’s ghost and things get quite deadly serious. Carlisle picks an opportune time to reappear. Carlisle’s best laid plan to kill the Angel goes a-gley. Meanwhile, Rita, Waterson and Magda have their final showdown at Blackpool Tower. And what becomes of Carlisle?
Wow! The book started out with a bang and just kept building! I loved it! I can’t wait tofind out more!
