USA Today Bestseller
From the USA Today bestselling author of A Lasting Impression and A Beauty So Rare comes an exquisite historical novel set against the real history of Belle Meade Plantation in Nashville, TN that explores the struggles of real people of the post-war South and the journeys of a man and a woman scarred by betrayal.
Olivia Aberdeen, destitute widow of a man shot as a traitor … betrayal.
Olivia Aberdeen, destitute widow of a man shot as a traitor to the South, is shunned by proper society and gratefully accepts an invitation from “Aunt” Elizabeth Harding, mistress of Belle Meade Plantation. Expecting to be the Harding’s head housekeeper, Olivia is disillusioned when she learns the real reason Elizabeth’s husband, Confederate General William Giles Harding, agreed to her coming. Not finding the safe haven she expects, Olivia is caught off guard by her feelings for Ridley Adam Cooper, a Southern man who seems anything but a Southern gentleman.
Branded a traitor by some, Ridley Cooper, a Southern son who chose to fight for the Union, is a man desperate to end the war still raging inside him. Determined to learn “the gift” that Belle Meade’s head horse trainer and former slave, Bob Green, possesses, Ridley harbors secrets that threaten both their lives.
As Ridley seeks to make peace within himself for “betraying” the South he loved, Olivia is determined to never be betrayed again.

What a wonderful historical writer Tamara Alexander is. I loved this story and had a hard time putting it down. It had a good balance of humor, romance, and action.
I listened to this one on audiobook and it was beautiful. The characters were well-researched and authentic. A heartwarming story of love, growth, and healing.
As I am a southerner who has visited Nashville and Belle Meade I found this book very interesting and enjoyable. Thank you for a good read.
Love this book…love this author
I recommend all of her books. Love them
An absolutely lovely and riveting read!
I was sucked right into the story and the lives of Ridley and Olivia as they struggle and thrive in the post-Civil War South. I can’t imagine Olivia’s feelings of helplessness after not only an abusive marriage, but also the shunning from all society after his misdeeds came to light. Even with the compassion shown her by her mother’s friend, her …
One of my two favorite books of all times by one of my two favorite authors of all times. The romance is so sweet and yet so strong – a Tamera Alexander specialty.
I really enjoyed this book. I loved the characters and their backgrounds.
I enjoyed watching her grow stronger and more confident. I enjoyed watching him learn to be more patient. There were some things that bugged me, but overall I would recommend it.
Olivia is living in the south after the war and her husband (who was not a good man) died for …
I have told others about this it is a good read
Really enjoyed how author included stories with a lot of the characters and not just the main ones. Pretty easy to read.
I like to read about this time period
Highly recommend this book. Another great story by my favorite author, Tamera Alexander. Ridley Cooper is a man’s man with many attributes who has a secret he isn’t ready to share with the man for whom he works or the woman he falls in love with. A wonderful story with characters we come to love especially Ridley Cooper!
Tamara has wrtten another excellent book. This story is entertaining and a lovely story all the way through. Her characters have heart and a lot of grit. A very enjoyable read.
My favorite of the year…..The characters were so well developed that I felt that I knew them by the end of the book. It was one of those books that although it was a happy ending, I felt sad that the book was over. I wanted it to go one and one. I recommend it highly who wants historical fiction with “real” people
Historic and romantic!
Loved it!
I own every one of Tamera’s books and reread them all again at least once a year. I have some that I enjoy more than others, but like them all. However, if I had to pick just one to keep it would be without a doubt, To Whisper Her Name. I love the humor! I laughed so hard at times that I cried. Then at other times I wanted to cry at their pain. …
Might have been first one I read….very good!
