If you haven’t tried Jenn Stark’s Immortal Vegas series, this is a great spinoff to start with! A sexy (really, really sexy) demon and a strong, kickass undercover cop heroine are unlikely allies in this steamy paranormal romance.
I really have a thing for angels. I have collected figurines and ornaments throughout the years so it’s no surprise that I am loving this series. A Fallen, cast down and turned to demon because of his anger now the leader of the Enforcers Special Force. Demon hordes are appearing and his special team is needed. Warrick is a force to be reckoned with and after all this time has lessons to learn. His assignment comes in the form of Maria, the prayer for help that he answers. This time we get some back story, the how, what, when and whys prior to the story. I love how these worlds all inter-mingle with the Arcadian Council and such it makes it easier to get into the flow of the story. I actually read the series out of order and can attest to this being a series of standalone reads. We get each member of the teams background and their test. This test is major and of course along with it comes action, chaos, black oozzing something or other and for Warrick, love. The kind of love that will sacrifice themselves. The kind that sees you for your heart. The kind that heals. Awesome story that will keep you turning the pages unable to stop until the last page is read. I have more to read in this series from an author that has captured my attention and kept it prisoner.
Took me a long time to get around to reading this, I’m ashamed to say. I’m glad I finally did. It’s written in the typically excellent Jenn Stark style with a crossover of characters from Immortal Vegas that both blends nicely and allows for Demon Enforcers to be its own series.
The first one starts with Warrick, the basic leader of the Syx, which is as it should be. The only thing I don’t like about him is how self conscious he is about his true form. Seems a bit wimpy for a Demon Enforcer. But it plays out ok so I can let that go.
Michael is being his usual nasty self, which is expected, and Warrick’s fellow enforcer Finn is going to prove to be a trip, that I can see coming!
I really enjoyed this book and am now moving on to book 2. It may not be Immortal Vegas, but it’s a close second!
As always, Very Well Done, Jenn!
The Syx are a demon special ops team, tasked with police escaped demons and send them right back, as they alone have the power to open and close the portals to Hell. The team consist of Finn, Stefan Gregori, Ram, Hugh and their leader Warrick, the main character in this story. Each of the books will eventually focus on one of the Syx, and his own very special path to redemption. Crossing Warrick’s path is Maria Santos, undercover cop invested on bringing down the La Noche gang, responsible for the death of her cousin fifteen years ago. Trapped in an almost deadly situation she calls on help, and gets Warrick. Now Warrick is bound to solve the case, save Maria, avenge her cousin and (unknowingly) redeem himself in the process.
The plot is rich, fast-paced and enticing, the world of the Syx is, despite its fantastic setting, fully credible, the characters relatable, and interesting. The chemistry between Warrick and Maria is undeniable, their banter witty to the point of open laughter, and a neverending source of enjoyment for the first to the very last page. Warrick might be a demon enforcer, even the ‘scariest’ of them all, but the guy is really out of his pit with Maria, who is by no means a ‘damsel in distress; fortunately for him, there is enough bad demon minions to work off his frustration.
As always Jenn Stark takes us for a ride in a perfectly crafted world with a spotless prose and the exact needed garnish of wit with generous servings of innuendo. The Demon Enforcer Series is a more mature reading than the original “Immortal Vegas” , but nevertheless nicely packed and elegantly carried out.
Jenn Stark Urban Fantasy Verse encompasses three Series: the original “Immortal Vegas”, the Spin-On/Sequel “Wilde Justice” and the Spin-Off “Demon Enforcers”. Every one of the three is a clear recommendation to every lover of intelligent and good crafted urban fantasy.
I struggled with the fact that the Immortal Vegas series was coming to a close. I have loved that series from start, and was scared about the finish. I shouldn’t have been – not only did it come to a satisfying completion, but it offered a glimmer of hope: this new series.
Yes, it’s always tough starting a new series – you can’t finish reading the first book, or it’s such a winner that you’re glued to the internet until you can one-click the next book… Trust me, you’re going to want to one-click that next book with this series!
This series is grittier, darker, and more raunchy than the Immortal Vegas series that we all love (see, still can’t let it go). It’s a series of redemption. It’s about overcoming the almost impossible task set before them by the eternal jerk, Michael. It’s about learning more about Warrick and his demon team, the Syx. It’s about meeting new, strong heroines and seeing how they interact with the Syx, and the world beyond this one.
I always thought that Warrick was a good guy, despite being a demon. I loved getting to know more about him – and his true form. I loved finding out how he came to fall, and learn that there is a way for him to redeem himself, and ultimately his team. I loved meeting Maria and came to realise that she really is a fabulous match for him. (Hands up all of you who, like me, were hoping that maybe he’d hook up with our girl, Nikki – trust me, Maria is just as great in her own way).
I could gush further, but don’t want to ruin it all for you. Suffice to say, there are new friends to meet, and even a few surprise old friends to greet. Buy it, try it – and you’ll love it!
