On The Edge is the second installment of author C.D. Reiss’ The Edge series. This delicious, dark tale explores the impact of mental health and PTSD on a couple’s marriage. The complex and layered characters have me hooked on this series.
On The Edge is a typical mid-series installment in that it offers more clarification of the conflict and continues to increase the story tension without significant plot progression. However, in every other way, there is nothing typical about this story from C.D. Reiss!
Multiple narrators tell the story. Interestingly, two of the narrators are two personalities of one character who is experiencing mental health issues. The stress of this situation on Greyson, the “third” narrator, is palpable. Juggling being supportive spouse and trying to analyze her husband’s situation can’t be easy. Add the further stress of trying to establish oneself in a post-military career might be the recipe for disaster.
Will fighting for her husband’s mental health break her? Was the trigger war or childhood trauma? Is Ronin really trying to be helpful? Will Caden and Greyson’s new marriage survive? Answers to these questions are sure to come as the series progresses, meanwhile, we readers anxiously await the answers, our pulse is elevated and we are in need of a hunky doctor’s care.
On the Edge takes us further into the madness. This whole book goes deeper into chaos and levels of crazy. It makes you question what you would do if your husband changed? It’s on a whole other level because of her profession and because of their history.
There is obviously way more going on than we know for now, and by the end, that tingly feeling something shady was happening? I had a bit of that in book one and now the tingle is way stronger.
You have to read these in order. YOU HAVE TO READ THIS SERIES. It will OWN you. I highlighted like crazy in this book. My heart aches for them, while clinging to hope for some understanding, clarity, and an eventual happy ever after?
4.5 Stars
The Edge series by C.D. Reiss is definitely going to be my summer obsession. The first book immediately drew me in and this second book has taken the intensity up several notches.
Caden/Damon is one of those characters you probably shouldn’t really love, but you just can’t help yourself. You feel as all over the place as Greyson does, never quite knowing where your emotions are or will be the next second, constantly in a state of up and down. Greyson loves her husband, but the man standing beside her is not the man she married. Can she find her way through the dark and uncharted waters he is leading her through? Will she want to?
Each new chapter takes a new turn and this is a series I can already tell I will want to reread. There are all these hints that I can’t quite piece together yet, but I know will all come together by the end and will be looked at in a new light in future rereads. As you read, you are never quite sure where Caden and Greyson are going next and I am loving every second of this intense series.
I saw a post on FB by CD Reiss a few days ago stating she thought that maybe people wouldn’t like this story. How unbelievably wrong she was! On The Edge held me from page one until the cliffhanger on the last page. I sat, unmoved, from my couch for hours totally committed to Caden and Grayson and the intensity, love, and the overwhelming emotions of their relationship.
Honestly, I don’t even know how to even review this book. I can’t say a word other than there are not enough stars to rate this book, hell, the entire series so far. It is brilliant. Captivating. Stunning. Seductive. Dark. Filthy. Erotic. Caden and Grayson’s twisted tale is about to become even more crazy and I have a feeling the bomb was dropped in this book but yet book #3, Broken Edge, is going to destroy us.
CD Reiss, I can’t wait.
Jesus, this just keeps getting better and better! Greyson and Caden are just phenomenal! This story is more twisted and mind blowing then I can handle! I am on edge just dying to find out how this intense story ends! I can’t get enough of these characters!
“I own your orgasms, your pain, your pleasure, your hunger . I’ve put my fingers on your heart and felt it beat. It’s mine. I own this body. Every inch of it. Every bone. Every organ . Every drop of blood.”
HOLY FREAKING CRAP! I have never read such a haunting love story. If you thought Rough Edge was mind blowing you haven’t read anything yet. On the Edge left me utterly and completely speechless. I have never read a book that was this mind altering. I can barely form a coherent thought, or sentence after finishing this book. Every page only got more intense then the one before it. I am fascinated with every aspect of this series. It’s truly astonishing how flawlessly written every installment is. Every plot twist and turn is more mind boggling than the last. I have no idea where the author comes up with this stuff, but I absolutely do NOT want her to stop. It is raw, heart pounding ANGST! I’m totally entranced by Caden and Grayson. I simply just can NOT get enough. They seep into your mind like a additcion, only making you crave more. The emotions they evoke are overwhelming and do NOT stop until they own every single one of your feelings. That ending made me want to throw my phone and scream WTF REPEATEDLY!! It completely slayed me with that cliffhanger. I am on pins and needles for Broken Edge.
“I loved him, and turning him into a patient rankled that love. He was mine. We’d made promises . Vows. We were a unit. His secrets were sacrosanct.”
Grayson will forever be one of the strongest heroines I will ever read. The amount of strength and determination her character possesses is astounding. I can’t imagine going through a fraction of what she is and still never wavering. Torn between love and the need to help her husband. Even for a psychiatrist that this is her speciality I don’t know how she does it. Caden by no means makes things easy for her but she handles every situation with a calm and calculated grace.
“You’re the beating heart of my life. You’re the blood in my veins.”
Caden slams into you like a hurricane. You got the good, bad, and ugly sides of him this book. He is absolutely one of the most complex characters I have read to date. Every facet of him more captivating than the last. Caden is the ultimate contradiction. Even split he is precise and aware of his every move. He commands your attention, while dominating your heart. Even in your most frustrated moments you can’t turn your feelings off. Caden will bring you on the Edge of darkness.
*5 STARS*
No scratch that, INFINATE STARS. No amount of stars will ever feel like enough for this book or series. Every minute is expertly written, and devastating to your senses. This is marriage at it’s grittiest and I simply can not consume enough.
*I voluntarily read a advanced copy.*
On the second book of The Edge series, (On The Edge) we get to dive deeper into Caiden and Greysons story..
The story of Caden and Greyson get’s more complex and little more darker with the arrival of a new “guest” … Some days Caden is there, all strong, dominating watching the love of his life trying to help him with his own demons.. and some night “The Guest” the sweet, caring man shows up, to protect her and take care of her.. He thinks Caden is hurting her.. he doesn’t understand their love and their interaction… in his eyes, Caden is a monster and he wont stop until he erase him from her memories and life..
“She was holding me together. She was the one who’d pulled me out of the darkness. I was broken, and I needed her.”
Greyson is doing everything she can to solve this “problem” she doesn’t know whom is whom? when is Caiden going to show up, When is Damon going to show up.. she is fighting hard for her husband to come back.. but she is getting tired, anxious not knowing whom to call or whom could help.. she is trying everything without any luck. but she wont give up until she gets back the man she loves..
“You’re the beating heart of my life. You’re the blood in my veins”
In On The Edge, you get to feel the desperation and the anxiety of their main characters.. Caden and Greyson are desperate to find a solution of what’s happening.. you can feel how the characters emotions are all over the place, trying to get to a middle ground or a place where they both can feel safe… days are going by and it seems like things are getting worst.. Caden and Damon, it is a constant fight between them.. both wanting to get rid of one and other, without any success, just making things worst for Greyson..
“I am your soulmate, I am the only person who truly fits with you”
in this Book, We also get to dig deeper into the characters mind… Greyson is a strong heroine, with so much love and passion for Caden.. she has been through so much and her walls are crumbling down, her strength is almost gone and still she doesn’t want to give up..
“The man i married is honorable, strong, brilliant, loving. He has a sense of duty that was never drilled into him. It’s just a part of who he is, and i admire it so much that sometimes it hurts to think about.”
Caden, character is darker and more complex.. it feels like there is so much more about his person that we are about to see.. but still he is an enigma..
“I love you so much, So much that when you hurt, I hurt. When you’re stressed,
I am. I hate that i’m doing this to you. You’re my life, and if anything’s breaking you, it’s me. I should be the one suffering, but I’m just inflicting it”
Really loving this series, is getting so deep and the characters are amazing.. can’t wait to see what is going to happen on Broken Edge..
I really don’t know where to start or what to say. I don’t want to give anything away! (Hey! I rhymed!)
I will say that this book definitely has me “On The Edge”. And sometimes when you read a series that starts out really good, there is a let down in the second book. Well THAT did not happen. It just makes me want to find out more. I truly think that this is one of Christine’s best works to date.
I think that this book magnifies this: if there is something going on in your relationship, how far are you willing to go and sacrifice in order to make it work?
Check out this series and take a ride on the edge with me.
Hold onto your bra straps and belt buckles, dear readers, because CD Reiss has only begun to play your eighty-eight keys.
You will get some answers to the cliffhanger for Rough Edge. You will learn more about Greyson, Caden, and Damon because CD Reiss continues to develop her characters, always moving them forward, always progressing the narrative. You will gain more insight into Greyson and Caden’s (and Damon’s?) marriage, and you will understand these people better.
You also will be increasingly frantic to find out MORE.
CD Reiss leaves you wanting MORE.
More of Caden. More of Greyson. (Some of you may want more of Damon, but I’m angry with him right now and want NO MORE.) More answers.
More sexy times because those scenes are intense, scorching hot, and almost feral in their intimacy. You definitely will want more of THAT.
You will gasp over the cliffhanger. You might even shout an expletive or two because that ending means you have to wait until Broken Edge, the next book.
You will love this book. You also will need to talk about it, so hit up the comments and let me know your thoughts.
5 “Apples & Ferrari” stars
“Careful.
It hurts.
when you open them, it hurts!!”
Now all bets are off ! We’ve officially entered into the St.John war zone. It’s a minefield of emotions you navigate where combative personalities are hell bent on revenge. Men and their egos!! They’d actually chop the nose to spite the face, or jerk the foreskin off !! **smdh**
The story is becoming dangerous as it progresses. I read the entire book with bated breath and a sense of impending doom. CD is attempting to chart the complex terrain of human mind and add to that PTSD + childhood trauma, and you have an unexploded bomb ticking in the pages.
“Would you rather be at the top of the Washington Monument with no way down or at the bottom of a narrow hundred-foot hole with no way up?”
Anyway you cut it, you’re bound to loose a limb or piece of your sanity. Don’t know which is worse.
In this continuing battle of Damon/Camden war, the personalities clash and how! Sadly the victim is Greyson. The toll it’s taking on her body & heart is equivalent to the pockmarks on her marriage. The things,(at this point I’m referring to both, because they’re becoming detatched and ruthless) are dividing the hours of the day and portioning Grey’s sentiments
“Isn’t it interesting that the sex you like comes from the man who appears during the day, and the man you can live with appears at night?”
It could’ve been really confusing in a lesser author’s hands but CD manages to keep her threads clean and unjumbled.
The tragic figure of Caden drew most sympathy. He’s fighting the shadow of himself and it gets really frustrating and unravelling for him to find the missing logs. What a fantastic scenario CD builds, what amazing imagination(it’d be a fantasy had it not been a truth), alas PTSD is no joke.
“I’d spent hours trying to understand what consciousness was and when mine began. I’d had to do it without a single human reference.
I had no way of knowing if I was my own person or another man’s setback. In moments like this, when I had to define the indefinable, I was the loneliest man on the planet.”
“He and Damon weren’t communicating the nitty-gritty.
Now I had to say everything twice.
I’d probably have to describe what I wanted twice, argue twice, explain twice.”
Is it the norm, is this how DID works?
Since there’s no set pattern or formula to it and I have zero knowledge or expertise, I’m going to solely rely on CD’s observations and interpretations. Which bring me to the handling of the story. I was bowled over simply by the hazardous topic, compound it with the treatment, research & narration. I’m gone ! Totally genuflecting now on the other side of the landmass CD . All hail !!
In conclusion, go read this psychological revelation thriller. I insert “revelation” because I’m a novice, ignorant and apprenticed in this area. It’s scary but really enlightening, changed my perspective and opened my eyes to a dreadful epidemic which is spreading unnoticed with alarming speed. If we do continue, and with present times(read “regime”) this could end up with a body count more than all the wars combined!!
Sometimes I wish I could get away with cursing in a review because this story is a total mindf*ck. CD Reiss is a genius and this series is proof. On the Edge is romance and thriller all rolled into one. I’m pulled in immediately. The love between Caden and Greyson deep. The sex is off the charts. The tension unbelievable. The thrill beyond measure. The characters enthralling. This story is intense. So, I ask, how far would you go to save the one you love? Think about it. There’s no more I can say to entice you without giving spoilers and I just won’t do that. This needs to be read going in blind from the beginning. You will not regret it. Broken Edge (book 3) cannot come fast enough.
OMG! What did I just read? This book is so twisted and topsy turvy in my mind. Caden is Damon and Damon is Caden. They have Dissociative identity disorder, in other words he has multiple personality disorder.
The Edge Series is brilliant and from the mastermind of CD Reiss!
This series is darker than what I have read by CD Reiss and I love it!!!
His wife Greyson, flirts around with the dark side of Caden/Damon. She likes the pain, somewhat. It is scary what he has done to her and she knows it isn’t safe. She knows she needs to get help for him.
And, the ending, OMG the ending…. I have to know what is going to happen next! Broken Edge is next and will be out in July. I can’t wait to see what is going to happen next, I am sure it will also keep me on the edge!
I legit don’t know what to say in this review. I read this book with my heart in my throat most of the time, my stomach aching and breaths hard to come. I was completely fascinated all the way through.
I don’t know how Greyson is continuing to function as a relatively normal person on a day to day basis with everything that is going on. I also don’t know how Caden is functioning each day, but for entirely different reasons.
I think there are clues woven into this book that I’m supposed to be catching on to, but hell if I know what they are. I know I highlighted the shit out of it, though. I’ve quickly become obsessed with Greyson and Caden. I’m dying for more backstory on both of them. Christine throws a curveball at the end of this book, so it will be very interesting to see where this story goes next.
If the title of book 3 is any indication as to what is coming, I think the ride is going to get even bumpier!
ON THE EDGE by CD Reiss is book Two in The Edge series. This continues the story of Caden and Greyson. Since this continues their story I do feel you need to read the previous book ‘Rough Edge’. In addition this book sets us up for the next installment of their story in ‘Broken Edge’ which I cannot wait to read!
This series of their story so far as been such and emotional roller coaster ride. They still dealing with their feelings and what is being kept secret…and trying to find a ground they can stand on.
It hard to review this book when you have such high emotions for it and not wanting to give to much away…but it has kept me wanting more for sure!
GAH!! On the Edge continues the intense journey of Caden and Greyson. But in classic CD Reiss form, you really have no idea what a chaotic, dark, intensely sensual story you are about to embark on. This story was nothing short of magnificent as you are once again taken into the dark and shattered love story between Caden and Greyson.
This story is best read without any spoilers in hand but know that On the Edge picks off from that brilliant cliffhanger at the end of Rough Edge. This book made me feel every emotion as if it was being pulled from my own heart and mind. This story was intense and mindblowing and truly highlighted the fact that Reiss has a gift in that she can paint a beautiful picture with just her words and detailed, almost lyrical descriptions. I loved the undying love Greyson had for her husband and the devotion she felt to protect him and make things right. And Caden. Arrogant, Dominating, Sexy AF Caden. Never was there a man more torn than he. I don’t think I have loved a character by this author so much since Jonathan Drazen.
“Maybe that was the moment of my birth. The moment he woke up.”
I seriously don’t know what to do with myself anymore as those lines just blew my mind. This author is a genius and a serious contender to being this industry’s HBIC and those lines and the reasons surrounding them might have done it for me. Of course everything is a spoiler and I’d rather chew glass than spoil this story but just know I absolutely LOVE Caden and Greyson. Their story is consuming, addicting and compelling and is outright owning me. I seriously can’t wait for book three. Bravo! 6 stars! ~Ratula
