* AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * “This novel will be remembered as one of the best thrillers of the year.” –Associated Press “A shocking stunner in every way. The perfect thriller.” –Robert Crais When darkness closes in–he’s your last, best hope. Evan Smoak returns in Gregg Hurwitz’s #1 international bestselling Orphan X series in Out of the Dark. Taken from a group home at age … Out of the Dark.
Taken from a group home at age twelve, Evan Smoak was raised and trained as part of the Orphan Program, an off-the-books operation designed to create deniable intelligence assets–i.e. assassins. Evan was Orphan X. He broke with the Program, using everything he learned to disappear and reinvent himself as the Nowhere Man, a man who helps the truly desperate when no one else can. But now Evan’s past is catching up to him.
Someone at the very highest level of government has been trying to eliminate every trace of the Orphan Program by killing all the remaining Orphans and their trainers. After Evan’s mentor and the only father he ever knew was killed, he decided to strike back. His target is the man who started the Program and who is now the most heavily guarded person in the world: the President of the United States.
But President Bennett knows that Orphan X is after him and, using weapons of his own, he’s decided to counter-attack. Bennett activates the one man who has the skills and experience to track down and take out Orphan X–the first recruit of the Program, Orphan A.
With Evan devoting all his skills, resources, and intelligence to find a way through the layers of security that surround the President, suddenly he also has to protect himself against the deadliest of opponents. It’s Orphan vs. Orphan with the future of the country–even the world–on the line.

This series is a guaranteed thrill ride and this story bumped that excitement and non stop action even higher. Evan is on the ultimate impossible mission, to kill the President, but he also has accepted a call for the Nowhere Man which seems equally impossible. Through a series of twists, unlikely alliances, new information and one heck of creative talent and luck this story provides non stop action and entertainment while also showing an emotional aspect that is captivating.
I am a fan of this series and I loved this story. X has a heart that grabs my attention because even when he knows from training to let go, he can’t. His reaction to Joey, Peter and Candy was beautifully sad and lovely.
I can’t wait to read his next adventure and to see how more of his relationships have or do develop. Thanks for the opportunity to read this book and share my opinion!
I am a long-time fan of Gregg Hurwitz. In this latest installment of the Orphan X series, he’s at the top of his game.
THE BEST BOOK OF THE SERIES!!!!! Loved how the author wrapped up the overall threat to Evan and the other Orphans (still left living). I hope this isn’t the end of the series though. I hope the author has more doom and destruction and mayhem for Evan. I hope he brings Joey/Vera home too. Who knows, maybe Evan and Candy can team up together. Anyway, I hope this isn’t the end of Orphan X/Nowhere Man.
Orphan X is a great character who really comes alive with his humanity in this book. The story is compelling. You won’t be disappointed in his latest adventure. The author really delivers.
The 4th on the Orphan X series this book has a lot of slam-bang action as X goes after the man trying to kill all the orphans to hide his black-op past from his present political position. 4.5* It isn’t easy to kill the president but is anyone can, it’s Evan Smoak!
This whole series of books is great. Great author!
Love this series.
Any “Orphan X” book or story is an auto-buy for me, and Hurwitz’s hero Evan Smoak, aka “The Nowhere Man” is a delightful combination of Batman, The Spirit, James Bond, Person of Interest, and some gonzo weird stuff that’s uniquely Evan. Watching him try to navigate “normal” life is one of the best aspects of the series. I recommend starting from the beginning of the series to get the full flavor.
Love the Orphan X books, this one made me a little uneasy in light of our own current government, the “what ifs”. Having said that the book doesn’t disappoint.
Out of the Dark is probably the best book in this series, and they were all phenomenal! Evan Smoak makes James Bond look like an amateur, and I’m a huge James Bond fan! This time, Evan goes after his biggest target yet, the President of the United States! As always, while working on a mission, he gets a call for help. The Nowhere Man always helps. He feels it’s his way of repaying all that he’s done. I seriously hope that this isn’t the end of the series. I’d love to see many more! Outstanding narration by Scott Brick. I honestly couldn’t imagine any other voice being more perfect for this series.
Part of the Orphan X series. This author in my opinion is in the same league as David Baldacci and any reader that likes Baldacci is sure to love these books .
Love all of his work. Thank you for many hours of pleasure.
Out of the Dark is the latest in the Orphan X series, one that I have come to enjoy considerably. The Orphan series is not exactly a fresh idea: a boy is taken from foster care and trained to become a covert assassin for the government. What keeps me coming back is Evan’s personal development as the stories continue. Evan craves emotional bonds with those around him he just doesn’t know how to accomplish it. I have grown attached while watching Evan struggle to find meaning in his life.
As the Nowhere Man, a mantle he takes up after going rogue, Evan has become a type of avenging angel. Whether he is protecting a young man from those who murdered his family, saving an abuse victim and her child from their abuser or going after those who threaten the remaining Orphans, Evan thinks well on his feet and excels at planning. He is formidable when adversarial, using both his brain and his physical training to master any situation. Although some circumstances require a suspension of disbelief, Evan’s journey is worth the experience.
Random spoilery thoughts: I appreciated when Evan explained to his foes how he would defeat them, and doing exactly that. The boldness of the act was fun to witness.
Mia needs to find a way to deal with the sense Evan works outside of the law, or she just needs to stay away from him. It does neither of them any good doing their back and forth.
I am most pleased that in the end, Evan prevailed with his smarts rather than his brute force.
I was granted a copy of this book by St. Martin’s Press, through NetGalley, for my honest opinion. I suggest all readers come to their own conclusions.

Hold on tight and be prepared to not move again until your last page has turned! Thank you Netgalley and Minotaur books for allowing me to read this awesome ARC book and give my honest opinion!
Out of the Dark by Gregg Hurwitz
Orphan X #4
4am…I mean…4am? I stayed up reading this book because I could NOT put it down. I had to find out what would happen…I really did. It grabbed me and kept me enthralled from beginning to end.
Evan Smoak – Orphan X – The Nowhere Man – Who is he really? Well, he is a man I admire and really want good things for but wonder if he will ever find a way to have them? Being trained as an assassin from a young age, finding his way out of the dark ops job he had and making a life for himself while trying to payback for his past has not been easy for him. He takes on jobs for those who need his services and some of those cases are…intriguing. I can see that there will be more cases for him to tackle in the future and can see this series continuing even though the man out to kill him has finally been dealt with. At least I hope there will be more books in the series and in those books I would like to hear more about the remaining orphans still alive, find out how Joey is doing and see if Evan can find a way to live a “normal” life at some point in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press – Minotaur for the ARC – This is my honest review.
