Here is Just a Tantalizing Taste of this Tumultuous Tale:
“Bastien, it’s good to have you back in Avalon. We’ve sorely needed you, brother.” I could hear them shaking hands, and smiled at the sweetness of my husband being spoken to with such respect. “I hope it’s alright that we stay here for a while. We needed a safe place to crash.”
Rigby spoke up from his spot near the wall. I remember him taking that position when the up and ups were in a room, He wanted to be nearby in case anyone needed anything. “I’ve had your room made up for you and the king, my queen.”
I grinned at the news, rising up on my toes. “Lot, did you get married? Who’s the new queen?” Lot paused, as if I’d said something funny. “Um, you are. Rigby was talking about you. Morgan le Fae’s old room is the largest one in the palace, so that’s where you’ll sleep.”
“Oh, uh, Rigs? Not to be a huge pain, but I don’t think I should share a bedroom with Lot. Any old room is fine with me.” Rigby was patient, and never spoke to me like I was a dummy.
“I was referring to you and King Bastien, your majesty. Morgan’s old room is yours. There’ve been fresh sheets put on the bed, and everything’s been cleaned and ironed for you.”
Despite the craziness of the day, I barked out a laugh. “King Bastien? That’s awesome!” I clapped and hooted at my husband, who I knew was cringing. I barely remembered that my new title was Queen Rosie, and that, duh, whoever I married would be king by default.
Judging from Bastien’s chagrin, I guessed he was also just putting that together. “Knock it off, Ro. Seriously don’t call me that. Just Bastien is fine, Rigby. I’m not a king.”
Lot was firm to cover over Rigby’s sputtering. “You’ll answer to King Bastien, because that’s who you are. You’ve married Rosie, correct.”
“Yeah, but…”
“Then that makes you a king in Avalon. There’s King Urien, because he married Morgan le Fae, and then you, for marrying the Avalon Rose. Morgan le Fae was the oldest Daughter of Avalon, which made her queen. Now that her heir has taken the throne, you’ll rule by her side. This is nothing new, Bastien.”
“Okay, let’s not get carried away,” Bastien insisted, clearly uncomfortable. “You’re the duke, and I’m the Untouchable. Let’s just leave it at that.”
“No, Kerdik and Lot said together. Kerdik’s voice held no room for arguments. “Avalon’s seen too many faulty rulers. You’re one they already respect and look up to. If Avalon’s going to make it through this, they need to be able to trust their leaders. They revere the Untouchables.”
Bastien was palpably uncomfortable, shifting from side to side. “Aw, man! Avalon’s already got a king.”
“Yes, and now we’ve got a spare.” (pp. 22-23).
Book nine begins with a trip from Common back to Avalon; Rosie continuing to utilize her indubitable internal inner strength and spirit to help the Avalonians. Filled with dramatic action, great continued world-building, and developing characters with connected inter-dependent relationships. Yes, quirky characters with bits of comedic scenes continue to break-up the dangerous dramatic moments.
