Cassidy Kincaide runs Trifles & Folly in modern-day Charleston, an antiques and curios shop with a dangerous secret. Cassidy can read the history of objects by touching them and along with her business partners Teag, who has Weaver magic and Sorren, a 600-year-old vampire, they get rid of cursed objects and keep Charleston and the world safe from supernatural threats. When zombies rise in … rise in Charleston cemeteries, dead men fall from the sky, and the whole city succumbs to the “grouch flu,” Cassidy, Teag, and Sorren suspect a vengeful dark witch who is gunning for Teag and planning to unleash an ancient horror. Cassidy, Teag, and Sorren—and all their supernatural allies—will need magic, cunning, and the help of a Viking demi-goddess to survive the battle with a malicious Weaver-witch and an ancient Norse warlock to keep Charleston—and the whole East Coast—from becoming the prey of the Master of the Hunt.

I love this series, so buy it in hardcopy as I’m able. The world building is fabulous and detailed. I enjoy the mix of contemporary urban fantasy/paranormal set against the rich supernatural history of Charleston. Sorren brings his own history into the mix too, as do the visions Cassidy has.
The supernatural threats feel very real, and very dangerous, which makes the story a page turner. Although, being a series brings with it character backstories, I never feel as though the author is info dumping for new readers, and this story opens with Cassidy and Teag in the middle of trouble and a fight with a dangerous supernatural.
I like how the characters grow with each new story, and how their friendships and relationships deepen over the series. It’s not only the main characters who come with a full fleshed out background but their expanding group of friends and allies too. I enjoyed seeing more of Kell in this story, and his and Cassidy’s relationship growing. Teag is one of my favourite characters in this series, so I was very happy that his weaver magic played a big part in it. I felt for Anthony in the way he’s been thrown into all of this because of his relationship with Teag. I love them together as a couple.
Archibald Donnelly is an interesting character and I love the idea of the Briggs Society. Father Anne rocks, as do Mrs Teller, Chuck, Alicia, Rowan, Lucinda, and Maggie. I like how they work together, and look out for each other. I liked seeing more of SPOOK, the paranormal investigation group that Kell is head of, in this story too.
I love how well researched and detailed the supernatural foes are, and how the story comes together for the final showdown, with everyone playing their part to bring down the bad guys. I very much like how there are consequences for using magic, and that they don’t come through these fights unscathed.
I’d recommend this story to readers who enjoy urban fantasies set against a rich history of myths and legends with fabulous world building, interesting characters, and a story that keeps you turning pages.
I have read several of Mrs. Martin’s books in several genres and she always does a great job. Crazy things are going on in the little town of Charleston, SC. People are coming back from the dead and people are randomly attacking each other for no reason. Ghosts are being more violent and seen more often. Trifles and Follies is an antique shop in Charleston that secretly is run by a pair of supernatural hunters named Cassidy and Teag. Cassidy and Teag along with their friends (a priest, a necromancer and a vampire) work together to solve the mystery of what is going wrong in the city. This is book three in the Deadly Curiosity’s series and I have not read the previous books but I had no difficulty understanding the story. A fast paced entertaining book.
That. Was. AWESOME! It started right off with everything you could want in a book. I could not put it down and did not want it to end! I absolutely loved it!
I have not read the first 2 books in this series but after reading this third one I will be looking for them! Gail Z Martin has built a wonderful world in Charleston. The characters are well developed and the storyline is intriguing. All manner of paranormal talents are packed into this fast paced novel, including a different take on the Wild Hunt. I read a free copy and I am voluntarily writing this review. I enjoyed it very much, even though I lost a few hours of sleep finishing it.
It is indeed a Tangled Web with a mixture of paranormal, mystery, romance, and suspense. Cassidy, Teag, and friends have their hands full with strange occurrences happening throughout Charleston in this action-packed thriller. Great danger awaits them as they struggle to find the bitter and resentful witch that began this mayhem. This third installment in the Deadly Curiosities series is a great read.
I received a free copy of this book and choose to review it voluntarily.
Gail Z. Martin weaved an amazing tale with TANGLED WEB, the third book in the Deadly Curiosities series. Cassidy Kincaide and Teag Logan investigate several occurrences, including Zombie risings, the “grouch flu,” and the Wild Hunt. This story takes place in contemporary Charleston, South Carolina.
Gail Z. Martin does an admiral job with her character development. I like how the characters’ supernatural powers play a role in the story, especially Teag’s weaver magic.
I always appreciate when stories include mythology. Therefore, I enjoyed the Norse Seior and Wild Hunt aspect of the book. I thought it was clever how the Nicholson family and Fox Hunt played a role in the story.
My family and I recently vacationed in Charleston. It was fun hearing about places that we saw in this story. It made many scenes easy for me to visualize.
Gail Z. Martin does a great job with her plot. There are some good life lessons in the novel. The story is skillfully executed. She combines numerous details for a thrilling outcome. I recommend this book to people that enjoy supernatural mysteries and urban fantasies. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
Gail Z. Martin’s Tangled Web was an exciting and fun paranormal ride! I fell in love with her snarky, quirky and sarcastic characters immediately.
I didn’t realize this was the 3rd book in the Deadly Curiosities series when I started it. I’m usually one of THOSE people that have to read an entire series in order. To my great relief, I had no problems getting into this book. The world Martin has created is so detailed and coherent, it was easy to fall into. In fact, I’m looking forward to ready more of this series.
It was so easy to fall in love with the characters of the Deadly Curiosities world. I loved the variety and personalities Martin created. They make me smile just thinking about their interactions and comments. I also appreciated the wide variety of disciplines and lifestyles represented in Tangled Web. Not only did Martin include so many different faiths and disciplines, she provided explanations and context in simple statements that didn’t make the reader feel like they were being lectured.
I loved the take Martin took with the Great Hunt. Most associate the Great Hunt with Fae myths and stories. It was so refreshing to see a different take on the mythology. I’ll be honest, I don’t know if “weavers” are a real thing, but Martin did a masterful job of interweaving her own cannon and world with Norse and Great Hunt mythology. I’m looking forward to exploring more of the Deadly Curiosities world.
Their is so much going on in this story, curses, death, so much you will need to read it to really understand it. Exciting, mysteries, interesting and make it very interesting to sleep at night. Your brain will have a field day with the information. Excellent story and just in time for Halloween. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving a honest review.
