Pelican Cove Strawberries
(Disclaimer: I received an Advanced Readers Copy (ARC) of the book. Read it. Decided to provide my honest review). Strawberries and Strangers a Pelican Cove Cozy Mystery by Leena Clover was a pleasant lighthearted, witty read. The characters were unique – some quirky which made you chuckle as you were reading. The main character, Jenny, was well developed with a spotlight on strength, humility, vulnerability, and persistence. The author did a great job creating a cast of characters that can develop nicely through several books in a series if that’s how the wind blows. I would have liked more in the way of world-building hence the 4-star rating. There were descriptive’s but I could have used more reader immersion in the way of depth and breadth of the environment. I want to feel as if I could smell the ocean air as the character walks along the beach or see how the houses look like as the character walks, etc. Overall, I really enjoyed reading Strawberries and Strangers, the sleuthing was top notch, the twists and turns were very clever and I was absolutely shocked with the “whodunit.” MY RECOMMENDATION: If you enjoy a clever cozy mystery with a bunch of witty, quirky, and steadfast characters then run out and buy Strawberries and Strangers. I did. –Tex
Set in a small town the storyline is rich in atmosphere and the characters are well developed. The combination is like stepping into the Café and comfortably sitting down for coffee and conversation.
Jenny moves to her Aunt Star’s sleepy town when she and her husband split up. She’s settled in, working at the café and healing from her heartbreak. When a stranger in town is murdered on the beach and one of Star’s paintbrushes is in his hand, Jenny’s Aunt is arrested and charged with his murder. Jenny along with her Aunt’s and her friends look for clues to prove Star’s innocence.

Great quick read!
First time reading this author. I really liked the suspense and totally not who you expect as the murderer. Only bad part is in beginning you get confused on who is who, but once you get past that the book is good.
Great new author for me! Love meeting these characters.
When her marriage of over twenty years breaks up, Jenny King goes to stay with her Aunt in Pelican Cove. There she begins to rebuild her life and even find some happiness in the form of a job she enjoys and a couple of new girlfriends. Working as a waitress/baker/cook at the Boardwalk Cafe, she gradually adapts to her new life and lets go of the remnants of her failed marriage.
About three months into her new life, thanks to Jenny’s fresh ideas and recipes, the Boardwalk Cafe is catering the social event of the season. The richest family on the island has opened their land for a day when people from the island can come and see the magnificent house and grounds. This year’s lawn party is disrupted however when a scream alerts the crowd that something is wrong. A body has been found on the beach.
The body on the beach is someone no one knows, but because he had a paint brush in his hand that belonged to Jenny’s Aunt, the police suspected the Aunt. Jenny knows her aunt is innocent, and steps up to find the real murderer.
Author, Leena Clover has written a clever mystery that is peppered with clues and innuendos. Just when you think you know who the guilty person is, you learn you are wrong! Maybe the person has a secret, but it certainly isn’t a murder they have committed. Failure doesn’t stop Jenny as she pushes on despite a certain police detective who has asked her to stop many times.
If you want a book with interesting characters, the majority older or shall I say more mature, a friendly caring town, and a fair amount of quirkiness, then this is the book for you. It is a relaxed paced book that shows Jenny’s extreme efforts and loyalties while solving a most difficult murder.
