“Do not forget duty. But choose love when you can.” –Cinda Williams Chima, The Gray Wolf Throne
This short, clean novella is part of the Dash of Darcy and Companions Story Collection. They are P&P inspired stories that take a different path. This P&P story just made me sigh from start to finish. I was near tears as Darcy reflected over his life, his duty, his mother’s wishes and his relationship with his cousin Anne. OMG! This story will pull at your heart strings from beginning to end. I absolutely adored it. It is completely off canon but this what-if brings a whole perspective to our beloved characters. I can’t describe this story without giving a spoiler. Since it wasn’t mentioned in the book blurb, I don’t feel I can say anything about it in this review.
“Do your duty as you see it, and damn the consequences.” –George S. Patton Jr.
We open our story at Netherfield where Jane is still recovering from her illness. Darcy is in company with Miss Elizabeth and has already had his heart touched by her bright eyes and intelligence. He is a man lost but a man with many things on his mind. Our dear Colonel arrives with information that changes everything. This relationship with Darcy and Richard… these cousin/brothers will just grab your heart.
“Love can flourish only as long as it is free and spontaneous; it tends to be killed by the thought of duty. To say that it is your duty to love so-and-so is the surest way to cause you to hate him or her.” –Bertrand Russell, Marriage and Morals
Wickham has arrived with the militia and Lydia is front and center in garnering his attention. However, his eyes are on Miss Elizabeth. She, having spent time with Mr. Darcy, feels that something isn’t exactly right with Lieutenant Wickham and his tales of woe against Mr. Darcy.
Mr. Collins has arrived, but this is not the Collins from canon. Well… he can still bore his listeners into an unconscious state; however, there is a new quality about him that is sweet. OMG! Did I just say that?
I was moved to tears during scenes with Darcy, Elizabeth and Mr. Bennet. Oh dear… they were so touching. The dialogue between Darcy and Elizabeth are swoon worthy. Sigh. Again… with the tears.
Our story ended at 88% on my reading device and left the reader with a mild cliffhanger or rather a ‘to be continued’ thread. We were then given an excerpt of Master of Longbourn which will be released in June of 2018.
I volunteered to read this ARC [advance reader copy] with no expectations of a review. The views expressed are my own.
This was another great novella by Leenie Brown full of great characters and an interesting plot. This story had a bit more loss at the beginning and as a result was a bit more serious but it also has several fun scenes and I am looking forward to seeing what happens next in the sequel Master of Longbourn (Dash of Darcy and Companions Collection, #10).
Heart-warming and romantic, off canon story.
Loved both Darcy and Elizabeth in this book.
While Jane was ill at Netherfield, Darcy got some devastating news.
Elizabeth, saw that Darcy was capable of deep feelings and it started to change her perception of him.
He did have to convince her though, that his sentiments towards her was not the product of his grief…
A little havoc was made by the entrance of mr Collins, who was surprisingly amiable in this story and an excerpt of the sequel “Master of Longbourne” was the last 10% of the book.
I was sufficiently intrigued, both by the excerpt and the subtle hints in this book, that I will definitely have to read that one too.
I did think the turn in Elizabeth’s feelings towards Darcy was a tad rushed.
Heartily recommend this book!
