A spellbinding coming of age novel about three sisters and the relationships and choices that shape their lives from the bestselling author of Reese Witherspoon Book Club pick, The Rules of Magic “This bewitching novel explores the bonds of sisterhood like a haunting modern fairy tale.”—GlamourEach of three sisters—Elv, Claire, and Meg—has a fate she must meet alone: one on a country road, one in … fate she must meet alone: one on a country road, one in the streets of Paris, and one in the corridors of her own imagination. Inhabiting their world are a charismatic man who cannot tell the truth, a neighbor who is not who he appears to be, a clumsy boy in Paris who falls in love and stays there, a detective who finds his heart’s desire, and a demon who will not let go.
What does a mother do when one of her children goes astray? How does she save one daughter without sacrificing the others? How deep can love go, and how far can it take you? These are the questions this luminous novel asks.
At once a coming-of-age tale, a family saga, and a love story of sensual longing, The Story Sisters sifts through the miraculous and the mundane as the girls become women and their choices haunt them, change them and, finally, redeem them. It confirms Alice Hoffman’s reputation as “a writer whose keen ear for the measure struck by the beat of the human heart is unparalleled” (The Chicago Tribune).

Alice Hoffman never disappoints.
With so many books with superficial characters that are not well developed, she takes the time to present to you whole characters, complicated and interesting. These are people you would be interested to meet.
I was honestly envious of the lives the two girls led, traveling to Paris, walking the streets, their …
This book, although not really a feel good story, is well written and depicts the long term dynamics that can occur when secrets revolving around trauma are hidden and repressed. Many of the descriptive passages are magical and beautifully written. The relationships, despite their unique and uncommon characteristics that are common to this …
As with all of Alice Hoffman’s books there was a bit of magical whimsy in this story. Some tragedy, some love, some misunderstandings, some forgiveness but a book hard to put down.
Love this book!
Nearly all of Alice Hoffman’s books are somewhat dark and haunting. I keep reading them, however.
not my favorite of this author. a slog in the middle. i skimmed parts (which i hate to do). it did somewhat redeem itself in the end, but very very dark.
Was difficult to follow, kept going back and forth.
Compelling writing. And amazing panorama of the events that are the consequences of a horrendous trauma. The thread of love and family connections is strong, even at the darkest points of the story.
One word, FABULOUS.
Always enjoy a book by Alice Hoffman!
Like all Hoffman stories, always something unpredictable and a page turner.
I could not put this book down, but I can’t say it was a favorite. The story was tragic but I wanted to see how it ending still hoping for a happily ever after. Not going to ruin the ending but it is a book worth sticking with even when it haunts you.
Not my fav by one of the worlds greatest writers. Can’t put my finger on why… maybe someone else will tell me.
I have never been disappointed by any book by this author. I am always excited to find one of her books and look forward to her next. I have read everything she has written so I guess you would say I am a fan. You will not be sorry if you buy this or any of her books. She has a way of making her characters quirky yet not annoying, and you become a …
