I could count on one hand how many times a story has brought me to tear in the first chapter…this is one of those stories. Vengeance by Anna Markland, The Montbryce Legacy Anniversary Edition Book 4, brings so many emotions, you cannot help yourself to being drawn into each one. I cannot wait to read more of this series, although this book can be read as a standalone. Vengeance held me captive from the first page to the last and the well drawn characters easily come to life and captures the era in which the story is set. Anna is truly a superior author who’s books are so well described and stories that are so original, that I get giddy just thinking about her next release. This story has love at first sight, deception, torture, fighting, abduction, kindness, caring, friendships both new and old, true evil, devotion, trust, forbidden love, compassion, understanding, pain, rescue, rape, murder, healing, abuse, family love and yes, seeking revenge. This is a must read and I highly recommend this book as you wont be disappointed. So if you want to travel was back in time to 1097 AD Ireland with Ranan MacLachlainn, Lord of Tur MacLachlainn Tower and see if he really does seek his Vengeance.
***This book was gifted to me and I am voluntarily reviewing.
SETTING: IRELAND, WALES AND ENGLAND, 1097AD
This is Hylda Rhonwen de Montbyrce’s (Rhoni) story, the youngest child of Rambaud and Mabelle de Montbyrce. She is now 20 and no man has caught her heart. She despairs of finding a man with whom to share love as she sees with her parents. A trip to Wales to attend the installation of the daughter of family friends as the new Abbess results in the group rescuing an injured man and his companion adrift in a small boat, both near death from dehydration. The stage is set for an epic love story to unfold!
A ruthless pair of brothers, supported by mercenaries, overtake a castle in Ireland; renegade Saxons attack a group of travelers; a visit to the Welsh mountaintop fort where Rhoni was born, where the injured Lord regains his strength and gains an ally in the Welsh prince—all these events and places are important in the development of this engaging story.
CRITIQUE: An exciting storyline with a strong Hero who has undergone horrendous suffering, physically and emotionally, in the overthrow of his keep. The heroine is a brave young lady, unafraid of letting her heart love a physically damaged man, as she sees the strong man underlying the surface wounds. We see Rambaud and Mabelle as they watch their youngest fall in love with an Irishman, (not their first pick for their well-brought up Norman daughter). Many familiar Welsh characters from other books make an appearance as the plot moves through Wales, giving another sense of continuity with the past. A good story, strong Hero and beautiful heroine, with a HEA ending makes for an enjoyable book.
I enjoyed this story. It was great to meet “old friends”. Fate continued to play its part in this family’s life. Rhoni was spoiled and determined, but saw more than the physical. I loved her willingness to accept all that happened around her. Ronan’s anger and single-mindedness took some getting used to, but I was glad when he finally saw what was most important. I recommend this story.
I received a copy of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.
“Vengeance would be his”. I was not prepared for the emotions that seeped through the pages of this amazing story. Anna Markland has outdone herself with this 4th book in The Montbryce Legacy. She has brought the history and the terrible brutality of this time to life but also the loyalty and honor of the men and women who lived it. Ronan MacLachlainn is an Irishman of great honor and strength who has his stronghold invaded and suffers horrible torture and is maimed while his wife and unborn child are killed. He only survives by the help of the son of his steward, who managed to escape notice and absconds with a small boat to take them to safety. Rhoni de Montbryce, the daughter of rich Anglo-Norman parents is with her mother away from home when she spots him in the water when she hears the cries of a seal (yes an important part of the story). Fate has brought them together with an instant attraction, but can Ronan overcome his injuries and find love again? His only thought is avenging his dead wife and people while taking back his land. This is an intriguing story with so many facets, it kept me riveted to the pages. There are numerous twists and turns and even a little magic and paranormal that weaves delightfully in the story. This is my favorite trope with the wounded hero who finds redemption and love that makes him whole again. I will leave you with this last quote from the book “My friend, the heart can have it’s own reasons that have nothing to do with reason itself”. One of the best books I have read this year that engaged my heart and left me longing for more…
Another Montbryce Legacy Book by Anna Markland. I just loved Vengeance. To me it was an epic tale of love. This story has torture, revenge, murder, seals, (I love the seals), family loyalty, second chance at love and a lot more. This book is well worth the read.
I was given an advance readers copy. I voluntarily reviewed the book.
I was gifted a copy of this book. “Vengeance” by Anna Markland is book four in the Montbryce Legacy Series. Lord Ronan MacLachlainn of Tur MacLachlainn in Ireland is brutally tortured when his castle is overrun by brigands. Ronan is rescued by his steward’s son Connall. The pair makes their escape in a tiny boat and wash ashore miles from Ireland in Wales- unconscious and near death. Rescued by nuns, Ronan meets Rhoni de Montbryce. Can true love blossom when vengeance rages in the heart?
I really enjoyed this book. It is a complex story. It ties in various characters from the books so it is important to read the entire series. I highly recommend Vengeance.
Vengeance by Anna Markland (The Montbryce Legacy Anniversary Edition), while part of this series, it can be read as a stand alone.
Emotional, intense, poignant tale with danger, love and romance. This is Ronan MacLachlainn, an Irishman and Rhoni de Montbryce who seemss to be a spoiled, rich Anglo-Norman noblewoman, but she is so much more. Their story is filled with strength,
determination, challenges, hope and adventure.
Beautifully and masterfully written with intrigue, and romance. A few twists and turns, honor, integrity and a compelling storyline, will captivate and keep you engrossed in this compelling Historical Romance. A wonderful and beautiful Irish tale. Highly recommended for fans of Historical Romance, powerful characters, intriguing storylines and poignant romance.
I received this book as an ARC and am new to this author. I very much enjoy reading medieval so was looking forward to reading this one and it didn’t disappoint. It had a story of tragedy, suspense, action and romance. I felt the characters and there were many, lived up to expectation and were well written. But I did find it difficult in the first few pages to get my head around the names as most of the characters started with R or Rh but once I knew who each character was and their relationship in the story, I really enjoyed it. These characters all came from the books and as this is book 4 of 4, it would have been so much better if I had read the first books as then I would have known the names. I am sure I will go back and read the books that came before due to the many references to the past. There was a small amount of sex in it and as usual this reviewer skipped it but it didn’t change my enjoyment of this book. I would suggest those who like medieval to read it.
