A Kirkus Best of Science Fiction and Fantasy pick for 2019!A Library Journal Best Book of 2019! An NPR Favorite Book of 2019! “Everything epic fantasy should be: rich, cruel, gorgeous, brilliant, enthralling and deeply, deeply satisfying. I loved it.”–Lev Grossman, author of The Magicians When destiny calls, there’s no fighting back. Kihrin grew up in the slums of Quur, a thief and a … fighting back.
Kihrin grew up in the slums of Quur, a thief and a minstrel’s son raised on tales of long-lost princes and magnificent quests. When he is claimed against his will as the missing son of a treasonous prince, Kihrin finds himself at the mercy of his new family’s ruthless power plays and political ambitions.
Practically a prisoner, Kihrin discovers that being a long-lost prince is nothing like what the storybooks promised. The storybooks have lied about a lot of other things, too: dragons, demons, gods, prophecies, and how the hero always wins.
Then again, maybe he isn’t the hero after all. For Kihrin is not destined to save the world.
He’s destined to destroy it.
Jenn Lyons begins the Chorus of Dragons series with The Ruin of Kings, an epic fantasy novel about a man who discovers his fate is tied to the future of an empire.
“It’s impossible not to be impressed with the ambition of it all . . . a larger-than-life adventure story about thieves, wizards, assassins and kings to dwell in for a good long while.”–The New York Times

It kept me interested!
I couldn’t put this epic fantasy down. Well written with excellent timing and character building. Loved this book.
Very creative usage of magic and characters. Imaginative settings and plot. I want to read more by this author.
I did not finish the book. Too many other books to read to spend time finishing one that did not engage me or that I did not care about the characters at the halfway point.
I don’t usually like switching the storyteller from person to person, but this worked. & thank you for the lack of typos!!!!
Enjoyable book, but rather basic language and a simpler story line- but then, this is considered a “Youth” book. I will continue to read the series.
Once you start, you won’t be able to stop. This book takes you in so many directions, you won’t believe it!!!
Intricacies in the plot are important; they are what make the novel intriguing. “Ruin of Kings,” however, goes far beyond that. There’s just so much happening all at once that it leaves the reader’s head spinning. The twists and turns are such that they leave the reader lost and floundering in a maze of plot strands. All is not doom and gloom, however, as I must confess that the the way the novel is written in the flashbacks from two different perspectives is a very innovative approach by the author!
What You Need To Know:
– 1st book in a series
– Epic Fantasy
– Intricate and complicated
– This book blew my mind
When I first heard about this book in a Pan Macmillan Australia media release, the title alone drew my interest and when I read the blurb I was immediately intrigued.
Luckily, I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy of the book and dove straight in.
Within the first few pages I was captivated.
I’m not going to go into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil anything for future readers but this book has excellent worldbuilding, good dialogue, a great pace and the author is a fantastic storyteller.
Personally, I think fans of hit television series, Supernatural and Game of Thrones will enjoy the first book in this epic fantasy series just as much as I did.
I can’t wait to see what happens next.
