I truly enjoyed this book. Clemeny Louvel is a terrific heroine with a snarky sense of humour but the grit to get the job done. This book moves quickly but is action packed and very entertaining. Who would have thought the Queen herself would be so up to speed on all the things that go bump in the night in London. If you like steampunk, heroines with resolve, and terrific stories, this is a book for you!
NO ONE’S AFRAID OF THE BIG BAD WOLF!!!
Wow! If you’re looking for a fast paced, easy to follow, smooth flowing read that captivates from the start. Congratulations my friends you’ve found it. The characters were intriguing and complex. Following them along I was mesmerized as their personalities transformed and blended. The scenes so realistic and gripping I was hooked. A whirlwind of emotions and unexpected surprises that kept me on my toes and frozen to my seat. Graphic detailed descriptions were so vivid the tale came alive before my eyes. Phenomenal job Karsak thanks for sharing this little guy with us.
Highly enjoyed this action packed, emotionally engaging, magical adventure set in Victorian London and filled with danger, secrets which made for an exciting twisted fairy-tail with steampunk flair.
Red Cape Society Agent Clemeny Louvel is so strong, clever, sassy and determined to solve this case with her werewolf partner Quinn. An investigation of disappearances leads to the local wolf packs uniting and it is their job to get to the bottom of it and find out why the pack are banding together ad abducting local scientist. Extremely entertaining and thrilling journey, I am looking forward to more.
From the unique and beautiful mind of Melamie Karsak comes a new and refreshing re-telling of a classic story: Wolves and Daggers. In this story, tough as nails and smart as sin, Little Red is matched with a partner named Quinn and it is their duty to find answers to some very tough questions. This story is filled with action, adventure, quick wit, humor that all takes place in a wonderful world.
If you love Steampunk stories, or if you are new to them; you will enjoy this novella. I love how this author can take a classic story like Red Riding Hood and blend in werewolves, vampires, the supernatural and the preternatural. The story is brilliant and very much worth the read! I received an ARC and I am leaving an honest review.
I love this steampunk version of Little Red Riding , because this red riding hood doesn’t need rescuing from big bad wolves. She fights with help from an honorable knight who happens to be a werewolf. I highly recommend this book.
This was a first steampunk and I enjoyed the spin on the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale! Definitely a fun read even though I prefer more romance in my books!
Wonderful steampunk inspired faery tales. I originally got them for my teenage girls but ended up reading it before they get the books. Just proof reading them…that’s what I’m telling myself to justify it, lol. Great read!
One of my favorite steampunk worlds! Definitely has the best Queen Victoria! This take on Little Red Riding Hood is a great romp through the streets of London! I can’t wait to dive into book 2!
This was my first introduction to steam punk, and boy was it amazing. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I started this series, but I was blown away! This has been one of my favorite series of 2018.
3.5 Stars. I read Wolves and Daggers after reading Curiouser and Curiouser and really enjoying it. I enjoyed the fast-paced plot of Wolves and Daggers and the main character, Clemeny; however I didn’t feel that the world was well enough explained. There seemed to be werewolves, vampires, goblins – and even mentions of dragons and ghouls – but no real explanation of how they emerged in this world or how they all fit together. The story largely focused on werewolves but even then, there was no description of why there were so many in London or where they came from. I liked the steampunk elements of the story- techy gadgets, airships, and such- as well as mentions of some of the characters from Curiouser and Curiouser. I also liked the mystery surrounding Clemeny’s back-story. It looks like there are 5 more novels planned so i’m interested to see if I get more answers. I will definitely read the next one. (side note: I hope they catch more of the typos in the next one; there were several in Wolves and Daggers)
Melanie does such an awesome job combing Steampunk with Fairy Tales. I love this first book to start following Red Riding Hood. It was fun seeing Knave and Caterpillar in this book. If you enjoy this book I highly recommend reading Curiouser and Curiouser by Melanie. This is a great twist on Little Red Riding Hood. Little Red is a kick butt hero to keep Werewolves at bay in London. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
4 stars – It was really good
When London’s brightest tinkers and alchemists come up missing, Red Cape Society Agent Clemeny Louvel is tasked with finding out what is going on. For help on the case she is assigned a temporary partner – a werewolf with a knightly history and who likes to flirt.
This is a wonderful mash of paranormal, steampunk, fantasy, and retellings. Steampunk is not a genre I read normally but with the paranormal and retelling aspects for this world I couldn’t resist this story. What we see of the world in this first book is very fascinating and I know it will get even cooler in the new book. Also I love that all of Karsak’s steampunk books are set in the same universe so you will occasionally see characters from other books/series pop up.
Agent Clemeny is a werewolf hunter for the Red Cape Society and is known as Little Red to the wolves. She is deadly, smart, and is determined to do her job. I adored her! While we don’t get a huge amount of her history in this book, what we did get was fascinating and I can’t wait to learn more about her. Sir Richard was a fascinating hero, even if he is only briefly in this book. He is an old werewolf who is powerful, smart, and clearly attracted to Clemeny. I can’t wait to see how their relationship will play out in the rest of the series.
Overall, this was a fascinating world with some fascinating characters. If you are looking for unique paranormal worlds with kickass heroines, check this series out.
3.5 stars rounding up to 4
I liked the phrases from the classic Little Red Riding Hood scattered here and there and I enjoyed the descriptions of the various werewolf packs. I wish the main character didn’t randomly wish she had a man but it is set in a time when women were looked at as having expiration dates so I acknowledge it’s part of it but I preferred the portions she was kicking butt and taking no crap. This doesn’t end on a cliffhanger but it leaves you with a couple of questions the main character is asking herself.
Really liked the world building. The whole idea of a steampunk retelling of Little Red Riding Hood had me hooked, and the story held my attention.
Wolves and Daggers: A Steampunk Fairy Tale (SteampunkRed Riding Hood book 1) by Melanie Karask is a novel introducing a Steampunk Victorian England world. Inhabiting this world are humans, weir wolves, goblins, vampires, mages and other supernaturals. Working for Queen Victoria is a group of agents called the Red Capes and the heroine is Clemeny, or Little Red as her enemies call her. World building and characterization are well done despite the 100 page length. The plot is action packed, with mysteries and questions that will hopefully be addressed in subsequent books in the series.
Steampunk meets the Grimm Brothers. Little Red is one of the most feared and most respected member of the Red Cape Society in Victorian England. Operating at night and in the shadows, members of the Red Cape Society deal with the werewolves, vampires, and other supernatural beings that mix with ordinary humans.
Karsak has carefully created an alternate version of Little Red Riding Hood, drawing on well known parts of the traditional fairytale. There is a lot of “the better to see you with” type banter among the heroes and villains, and at the end, the big bad wolf does indeed go after Granny. Karsak also hints at something special about Red, something that could make her a steampunk supernatural wunderkind.
One of the things I love best about steampunk is you get to create whatever you want in your own piece of Victoriana, and if you do it well, no one questions you. In this instance, the plot is solid, the characters a bit underdeveloped but likeable, and it’s a good piece of escapism. I’m looking forward to the next two books in the series.
Okay, so, a few years ago I picked up my very first steampunk book. I had no idea what steampunk was but it sounded cool so I gave it a shot. From there I fell in love, the book I picked up was Melanie Karsak’s first book in her Airship chronicles series. Now, why does this matter, you might be asking since this is clearly not apart of that series. Well, it’s in the same world!
So now with what drew me to this series I now can begin to tell you that I loved it. This is a novella series so all of the books are short which is really nice. However, that is also why I knocked off one star even though I know this London and how things are supposed to go someone just picking it up may not feel as connected to it since there is not a lot of world building. Don’t get me wrong things are laid out well and this twist on red riding hood is amazing. Hey, I’m biased because I love the world and want more of it. Due to the length of this book (122 pages), I do not feel that I can really go into it too much without spoiling something. I can say that I ordered the next two books as soon as I was done with this one.
So if you like retellings at all I say pick up this first book. You will love it!
I am not sure about this one. I think what I liked and disliked about this book is about equal. I liked the paranormal creatures. I didn’t like the feeling of old time London. I like the strong lead female character. I didn’t like the “Red Cape” society concept. I could probably go on like this, but I’m sure you get the point. This seems to be the first in a series, I can’t say I’ll be reading book 2. This one just isn’t for me.
