Most people have a run of bad luck from time to time, but Hamish Doherty, Earl Leighton has had his fill. Both times when all is lost, it is Miss Katherine Martin that steps into the breach. Despite being in trade and actively participating in her father’s business, Hamish finds that he cannot get Kat out of his mind and when she tells him how he can repay her for bailing him out, he is tempted, but his fear of the results hold him back. The plot is fairly short but intense with a romance that builds and spirals out of control where it lands for all to see. I felt for both the main characters and their anguish engaged my emotions as they struggled through class differences, snobbery, and public opinion. I received a copy of this book as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
Poor Hamish, Earl Leighton is having a run of bad luck. When a lady comes to his rescue he must return the favor. When part of his house burns, he meets the lady again. Katherine Martin is the daughter of a Master Builder. She’s the one who figures up the cost of supplies and labor. When Hamish asks her what he can do to return the favor, all she wants is one night in his bed. A game of yes or no and hide and seek may well be both of their downfalls.
Another emotional tug of war read in the series.

To Tempt an Earl is the third book in Tamara Gill’s Lords of London series. The characters are all part of the same friend group and so are connected, but it is not necessary to read them in order. Each book in this series could easily serve as a stand-alone book.
I adored Katherine and Hamish. For me, this book just flowed so nicely and has been the most powerful in the series thus far. I was so emotionally invested in what would happen for these two. I also really appreciated that their romance was unconventional for the time, but still believaby kept within the restrictions of their society(for the most part).
His series of misfortunes at the beginning of the book, all seemed to be pointing toward some nefarious plot against him. So it was a bit anti-climatic when this faded into nothing. I know that these misfortunes are what brought them together and put him in her debt, but they are also in the same friend group and frequently in one another’s company and it seems like they could have been brought together and him become indebted to her through less unlikely means.
I understand why he was fearful of the notion of a wife and children, but he can’t let that dictate his life. If mistresses and wordly women know how to avoid pregnancy, then it stands to reason that the woman he chooses to spend his life with can learn to do the same. This didn’t need to get in the way as much as it did, but I understood the hesitancy even if he was a bit ridiculous about it.
I really loved Katherine’s character. I respected her trying to take her future into her own hands, to seek out the experiences she wanted when they did not seem to be in the cards for her. I find it hard to believe that as lovely has she is and from such a wealthy, self-made family that she has had no prospects. I know she works and isn’t as traditionally beautiful as some other women, but I still found this hard to believe. As a result(plus her cousin with her hurtful remarks), she has a very low confidence and has a very hard time believing herself to be desirable or attractive. I really felt bad for Katherine for how vulnerable she was in regards to her looks.
To Tempt an Earl has been my favorite book in the series so far. I recommend this book and the entire series.

I read this book with my Kindle Unlimited membership.
A joy to read. An independent woman of trade, Katherine is best friends with Celia, the Marchioness of Aaron and Darcy, the Duchess of Althelby. Katherine has a good head on her shoulders. She is intelligent, astute, better than most men at her trade. Her father is a master builder and she assists him by evaluating the job, measuring the area, add in any extras the owner my want and sets up the bill. If they are hired she orders all the material so her father can concentrate on the building or rebuilding whatever the case may be. She is constantly on the job site making sure every thing is above par. Her father’s reputation is the best in England. Her personal life is another matter. At six and twenty she has yet to wed and feels that she never will. She is not classically beautiful. However she is attractive. She does not feel attractive. If she was why are there no suitors. I felt bad for Katherine. It was easy to identify with her sadness and feelings of being less than others. She has witness the happiness her two dear friends Celia and Darcy have found in marriage and unfortunately for her, she longed for it. A fluke of fate brought Katherine together with Hamish, the Earl of Leighton. At an inn she saved him from a severe beating from the proprietor when Hamish’s money was stolen from his room and he could not pay. Katherine paid his bill and Hamish was so grateful that he offered to return the favor in the future. Hamish’s year so far has been dismal. You could even say unlucky. He had unfortunate situation one after the other happen to him. Part of his London townhouse had burned down and needed to be rebuilt. His man of business arranged for Mr. Martin’s company (Katherine’s father) to evaluate the rebuild and give a quote. This was three months after the incident at the inn. Hamish was intrigued with Katherine. She was taller than average. Slimmer than most but still attractive. Hamish looked forward to working with Katherine. He also was good friends with the husbands of her two good friends so they would be around each other quite a bit. Even though Katherine was below his social status he did not even consider it a problem. He wanted to get to know her. So he did. One evening at an event Katherine mustered up all her courage to ask for the favor he owed her. She asked for one night of passion. If she was destined to be an old maid she wanted to know what it was like to be desired by a man. By this time Hamish wanted Katherine but she was a virgin and that was where he drew the line. He told her no. But that did not stop Katherine from trying to change his mind. It was entertaining the lengths Katherine went to gain his attention and it was equally entertaining to read how hard it was for Hamish to resist. I truly enjoyed reading this and would have given this a five star rating but there was one thing that I feel was left out of the story. Katherine’s younger cousin Jane who kept letting her know how dowdy she looked never came back into the picture after all was said and done with Hamish and Katherine. I just would have loved to read about her shocked response of envy and possibly jealousy. Other than that I really enjoyed reading this.
I have read this third novella in The Lords of London bundle.
Like the previous story, it was intriguing to follow a woman working in trade mixing with the Haute Monde.
Katherine Martin is no shy nor weak woman, she is well aware she is far from a beauty, not having a full figure like it is “à la mode”, plus working for her father tarnishes her image.
But for once, she wanted to have what her friends and most of the women had, someone desiring her. Why she proposed a night of pleasure to the down his luck Earl Leighton.
Hamish Doverty is drowned by an unfortunate combinations bad luck. Katherine saved his hide once so when he encounters her again he is intrigued by this independent woman, she is at the opposite of what he is usually attracted to a woman but something in her has caught his interest. So when she propositioned him, he rejected it, he does not dally with innocent women.
But as time goes by, they meet again and again until Hamish becomes obsessed with her.
Kat is a sweet woman, she longs for a shared life with a caring husband, but for what ever reasons (physical attributes or lineage), she never caught a man’s eyes. Why she sought to win some knowledge by having a night with the tempting Lord Leighton.
Hamish has closed his heart after losing his dear sister to childbirth. So he refused to ever marry and produce children. And Katherine’s intrusion in his life unsettled him as he wants to enjoy his time with her but he fears the outcome.
Sure, I would have loved more groveling on Hamish’s side but love is what it is, and forgiveness is entirely part of it.
Hamish Doherty, Earl of Leighton ran into a bit of trouble at an inn. His wallet was stolen and now he can’t pay his bill. Katherine Martin see Hamish and pays his bill for him. He doesn’t remember her but she remembers him. He is the friend of her two closest friends husbands (Darcy and Cecilia from books 1 & 2). He then has a fire at his home, and who is the best rebuilders in London why Katherine’s father’s company. She sees him quite a bit and decides that she wants to spend a glorious night in his arms as repayment. She is 26 and feels she is never going to marry so why not have a little fun. He is not about to do this for many reasons. Hamish however, can not get her out of his mind. When he finally gives in (because he can’t imagine her with anyone but him) one night is not enough. Katherine is ok with being his mistress as long as they are very decret. During one evening tryst they are seen and the news is printed in the rag sheets. The Duke of Athelby and Marquess of Aaron demand he marry her but he says no and leaves town. Katherine is left to deal with all the gossip and finds out some unsettling news. Hamish once he realizes what he has done and how much he loves her comes back and tries to make amends. She wants nothing to do with him and now he is begging her to have him…Will his luck change?
Love Tamara Gill’s writings. She can bring to life characters not quite up to society’s standards. Her heroines are anything from Nobility to the most common of women. But they all are strong and confident. She is not afraid to write about the most “unspoken” problems and doesn’t cower to any others standard. Love her all her works!
Hamish Doherty, Earl Leighton & Miss Katherine Martin, a daughter of a successful master builder were obviously from two different positions in society & could they ever bridge the gap? The book was just such a “feel good” story with such wonderful main characters & endearing secondary characters that all pulled you in to their lives. This story has everything thing that you want or need in a historical romance – rescue of an Earl, a fire, the Ton, friendships, pushing mother, loving father, romance, scandal, honor, love, some spice a rescue but, in the end, can nobility marry some from the trades? I highly recommend this book & all in this series & I am looking forward to reading the next one!
This is entertaining, amusing and interesting. Hamish is stubborn, charming and unwilling to change. Katherine is smart, outgoing and determined. They had friends in common, but did not really talk to each other, until she saved him a beating by vouching for him at an inn. Then, when his house burns, he hires her father’s company to rebuild it, which put them in closer contact, because she manages the site. She knows she’s too old to marry, and she finds him attractive, so she asks him for one night, so she at least gets to experience what happens in the marriage bed. He refuses, and avoids her, so she teases and tempts him, then says she’ll get someone else. He doesn’t like that idea, but he doesn’t want to be responsible for her ruin, and he won’t marry her. But he does finally give in and they start an affair. But when they get caught he runs away to his country estate. He really is a cad for most of the book, but he doesn’t come across as a jerk.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author. This is my honest and voluntary opinion of it.
Hamish Doherty, Earl Leighton, is having a bad year. He mourns the death of his sister in childbirth, he has been robbed, beaten, and half his house has burned to the ground. He could use a positive change in his life. Katherine Martin is the daughter of a master builder and is a confident member of his business. She is not as confident of herself personally. She is twenty-six, tall and slender, and has lost hope of finding love. These two meet when she rescues him during an unfortunate incident at an inn. When his house burns, they meet again when he hires her father’s company to rebuild his home. Although these two are attracted to each other from the time they meet, there is a lot standing between them and an HEA.
This is a very good story of accepting love where you find it. Love between the stations in London society was difficult, but not impossible. The main characters pulled you into their story. There were some uncertain moments, and both were frustrating at times. They needed a little shake, or maybe a hug. The friends surrounding and supporting them (setting the example?) were characters from the other stories in the series. I enjoyed reading Hamish and Katherine’s story and look forward to the next book.
Good romance. An Earl determined not to wed is drawn to a lady who is not only “on the shelf”, but (gasp) works in her father’s business! Enjoyed it.
To Tempt an Earl by Tamara Gill is another enjoyable and entertaining Regency romance. Book 3 in the “LORDS OF LONDON” series, but can be read as a stand alone. I found this story to be easy to read, flowed seamlessly and effortlessly. Very creative. A working class woman and a gentleman of the ton. I enjoyed reading about the difference between the classes, the trials they have to find their HEA, and the struggles they have. Brilliantly written. Steady paced, unpredictable and a fascinating romance. I was gripped from the beginning and held in place as I read this amazing story. Ms. Gill is a truly talented author, who can draw her readers into a story and keep them in awe. Masterfully done!

A delightful story that brings two unexpected people together who might have not met under normal circumstances. Tamara Gill excels at creating compelling characters with wonderful dialogue that holds you captive as you read her stories. Hamish, the Earl of Leighton has been experiencing one bad thing after another. His home has burned, he was attacked and robbed and he is trying to avoid the marriage mart from a girl who is determined to snag him!
But is his luck going to change as he goes to the country to retreat? No, it really doesn’t and this is when he comes in contact with Katherine, daughter of a rich tradesman. Katherine is what I love all heroines to be.. Strong, determined and knows what she wants and usually that has nothing to do with the peerage. But she helps Hamish and in the end only demands one thing from him.
What is that you say? You will have to read and find out how this couple from entirely different backgrounds find they are attracted to each other.
Another excellent addition to the Lord’s of London series!!
I really enjoyed this charming and delightful read. Hamish and Katherine’s story offers readers an entertaining blend of humor, emotion, drama and romance. Can this couple overcome their class differences, Hamish’s fears and Katherine’s insecurities in order to get a HEA? Read this Wonderful romance to find out.
Gill is one of my favorite authors. To Tempt an Earl is Book three in her Lords of London series. It can be read as a stand alone book; however, the story flows better when you have read the previous books in the series. Although this book is well written, I struggled with the core of the story. Lord Hamish Doherty is arrogant and cares only for ladies who will bring him passing pleasure. When Miss Katherine Martin rescues him from a potentially dangerous situation, Hamish seems attracted to her. But when they meet again at a Ball and he doesn’t ask her to dance, I felt confused. Katherine sees herself as a spinster at twenty-six. Back in those days, she would have been considered too old for the marriage mart. She decides that she wants to “experience” the physical side of marriage without marriage and approaches Hamish with an offer. I won’t tell what his answer is in this regard, but I found the characters in this story confusing. Why would Katherine approach Hamish when he has snubbed her? Why would Hamish give her a second thought when he is only interested in good looks and passing fancies? It felt like Twilight all over again except our hero shows little interest in our heroine. The heroine pressuring the hero and the hero — well, you will have to read the book to find out Hamish’s answer. This book was good, but the others in the series shine far brighter.
I absolutely loved Hamish and Katherine’s story. Wnen a “Lord” gets intrigued by a commoner sparks tend to fly. I loved the interaction of the characters. They were believable and very well written. But, can they get their happy ever after? This is one you should read and see. I promise you’ll be glad you did. I look forward to reading the next one in this series. I was gifted this book and am voluntarily reviewing.
Great Read by Tamara Gill! To Tempt An Earl is book 3 in the Lords of London series. If you have never read a Tamara Gill book before now, you are in for a real treat. Though in a series it can be read as a standalone. Tamara has such wonderful characters, although a regency story, I could really relate to it in the present. It is an easy read and a most enjoyable one at that. This story is very creative and original and I know you will enjoy it as much as I did. Tamara has a true talent for writing and I cannot wait for the next book in this series to be released. This story has friendships, misunderstandings, honor, scandal, a fire, an overbearing mother, a loving father, innocence, insecurities, a rescue but can an aristocrat truly marry a commoner? You will just have to read the amazing story to find out and I highly recommend that you do.

Katherine Martin saves Hamish Doherty, Earl Leighton when his money is stolen at the inn he is staying at and he can’t pay his bill. He offers her anything she wants in return as repayment. He hires her father’s company to rebuild the part of his house that burned, but she decides she wants something more from him. Her friends Cecelia and Darcy have both married the loves of their lives and at 26 too tall and too thin Katherine is resolved to never marrying and working for her father the rest of her life but she still wants to know passion and has decided that Hamish is the one to show her that. After Hamish’s sister died in childbirth he doesn’t want to marry and put any woman at risk. And since Katherine is close to the wives of his friends refuses to honor Katherine’s request for fear he will ruin her and as a result lose their friendship. But he can’t deny the passion he feels for her. When Katherine is ruined and faces his biggest fear, will he step up, admit his feelings for her, and embrace a life of love and happiness with her or run away in fear?
An Engaging Romance
Katherine is on the shelf at twenty six and so when an attractive Earl owes her a debt, she tries to persuade him to give her a night of passion. I liked that Hamish was honourable enough to turn her proposition down on several occasions and that it was only when he had been tempted beyond endurance that he gave in. Katherine is a sensible woman with a strong work ethic, a business like brain and friends in high social circles. She has given up on marriage and a family of her own but her proposition is risky as she still has a reputation to protect.
This is a love story of two people from different social classes, ie an Earl and a master builder’s daughter. Regardless of the fact that she has been well educated and has a good dowry, to the ton a marriage between the two of them would always be a mésalliance.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from the author. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Hamish Doherty, Earl Leighton is having a terrible Season. An unpaid bill at an inn and a missing purse. A portion of his home burned to the ground, he was attacked outside a gaming hell.
Luckily he’s rescued at the inn by an intoxicatingly beautiful stranger. As the daughter of a successful master builder, Miss Katherine Martin has no time for peers and their problems. However there is something about this handsome and yet unlucky earl, and when their paths cross again, Lord Leighton offers to repay his debt to her in any way she pleases. Katherine decides one night in his arms will be just right. However Hamish is adamant that he can’t go through with her wishes but the more the pair meet the harder it is to refuse.
A lovely romance of love between the classes & some of the trials they have to withstand, I don’t see Kat inviting her mother in law to tea any day soon! I read this engrossing short book in an afternoon & was drawn in from the very first page the characters are very well drawn, some very likeable & some horrid. Hamish & Kat are attracted to each other from the beginning but he’s terrified of losing another loved one in childbirth & she has very low self esteem. Their way to their HEA wasn’t easy but it id make for a lovely read.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
How the mighty will fall…Hamish. This story has class distinction that made me feel uncomfortable at times for Katherine. She is so lovely and sweet and wants to know what happens between a man and a woman and finds herself in a position to ask for it. Hamish is one of those for which class is an issue. Little does he know that love does not discern class or wealth. Hamish’s struggle with his feelings (about Katherine, his properties, and about children) resonates with each page. I loved seeing Katherine’s cavalier attitude toward her request and Hamish’s coming to terms with his upper-handed attitude change over time. My favorite story of Ms. Gill’s.
I received a complimentary copy from the author.
