Steel, one of the last Dire Wolves on earth, has searched more than 100 years for the special mate promised by the Fates. Discouraged after meeting his latest prospect, he sees a naked hitchhiker on his way home who’s everything he’d envisioned the man of his dreams would be. His wolf and body tell him he’s found his fated mate but why can’t he pick up his scent? Robbed of his car, clothes and … clothes and money, Jackson, Alpha of the Blackwood Pack has no choice but to thumb a lift, frantic to get home to his six brothers. He’s been protecting them from a rival pack who massacred most of his family and wants to finish off the rest. When Steel rolls down his window, Jackson knows he also has found his fated mate but it would be too dangerous to claim him with his pack under attack.
After the intervention of an Oracle and a Witch, Jackson discovers why the Fates made him unique-just for Steel. Navigating the mine field this revelation brings, Jackson and Steel must figure out how to make their relationship work while dealing with forces determined to kill the Blackwood pack – and them.

I really liked the concept of this book and the plot lines. The author built this book in a way that opens up so many possibilities for future books and storylines. We get multiple POVs in this book, from both of the MCs, Jackson and Steel, as well as almost every other character we meet. I personally like getting both MCs POVs, and I even like getting a supporting character POV every now and again in a book. I liked getting so many people’s perspective in this book because it helps to build the story. However, the way that it is executed is a little distracting. The POV will switch from one sentence to the next in the same paragraph. The writing and the dialogue between the characters is a little quirky and dramatic. For me, a lot of the conversations and reactions between the characters were a little over the top.
I liked the way the author portrayed this shifter universe. The way their wolf is separate in its own feelings/actions but obviously a part of them as well was interesting. I loved how they would check on their wolf and see them in their head doing certain things. I was also drawn in by the fated mates aspect of this shifter universe. I would not say this book ends on a cliffhanger, but there are definitely some unresolved issues that I and am curious to see how it plays out in the next books.

What a great way to start a series. I love how the author incorporated the back story so smoothly without dragging the story down. The way the author worked the characters was like crochet. Sure some were more prominent, but they all were seamlessly knit together. I can’t wait to read the ones to follow.
First time reading this Author and I love her writing style. This book was an absolute treat. Jackson and Steel was a delight to get to know. The supporting characters were very interesting and I can’t wait to get to know more about them. Looking forward to book 2. Nick J Russo I’ve always love your performances and this one was truly a delight. You outdid yourself with this one, thank you. If you’re looking for a m/m paranormal romance with a fated mate team, along with some action, then get this book. It’s a guarantee you will enjoy listening.
This is a great start to a new series and I loved this book. Jakson and Steel are perfect for each other. Highly recommended.
This book was a huge disappointment.
I was intrigued by the blurb, as the M/M, wolf-shifter fan that I am. But the writing was so poor I couldn’t make myself continue.
The storyline as such was alright, the cover pic was fun and hot. But the writing was a total mess. And when I – someone with English as a second language and who has never lived in an English speaking country – am unable to concentrate on the story because of sucky language, then it’s truly bad.
First off, there are many super strange switch-up of words. Like two and too being mixed up. Or instead of someone staring, they’re starring.
Another thing that’s super annoying is the constant jumping between different point of views. The POV changes constantly, sometimes within the same paragraph. It’s practically impossible to know who’s POV it is at any given time.
Then there’s the awkward dialogue. Everyone is talking in the exact same way as the rest of the book is written. Meaning, they talk in very long and complete sentences all the time. Often with a bit of backstory thrown in. And it’s just… Nobody talks that way! It’s super silly.
Also, for some reason there’s some type of paragraph system that is entirely illogical. Every few sentences, there’s a new paragraph. Even in the middle of a sentence there could be a new paragraph. It’s ridiculous.
It’s obvious this book is in need of some serious editing. But even then I’m afraid that still wouldn’t be enough to save Dire Warning. Anyway, I give this book two stars. Because it could always be worse.

Audio Review:
Performance – 5
Story – 4
Overall – 5
I enjoyed this a lot.
Dire Warning is the first book I’ve read by Mary Rundle and I liked it a lot. Nick J. Russo’s performance of the story really kept me interested, maybe even more than the story. He does a great job (as always!) with the different character voices.
While I enjoyed the story a lot, there was one thing that I thought was resolved a bit too neatly. Unfortunately, I really can’t talk about it because it would be too much of a spoiler. I have a feeling that this “thing” will come up again in future books, at least I hope so, and perhaps more will be revealed then.
There were a few places where the lovey-dovey stuff felt just a bit over-the-top for me and that kept me from giving this five stars. I understand that it was the author’s first published book so I would expect other books in the series to improve as she gains more experience as an author. Still, all-in-all a very enjoyable story and I wouldn’t mind reading, or listening, to more books in this series.
A copy of this audiobook was provided to me but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author/narrator.
