HE IS THE MAN SHE COULD NEVER HAVE LOOKED AT WITH MORE THAN A POLITE GLANCE… she regards it as the ideal opportunity to visit her birthplace again and see the best horseflesh in the Highlands—all under a false name. She never imagined her future brother-in-law would take siege of her body and her mind, endangering her very soul, but her father has signed a marriage agreement between her sister and the commanding laird.
SHE IS THE WOMAN HE COULD ONLY KEEP IN HIS BED, NEVER IN HIS LIFE…
Fingal McKendrick has a problematic horse he needs to put on the mend. When he realises the horse expert he’d agreed to come and help his Arab stallion is a woman called Emily Paddington, he has an urge to send her packing; not only because she’s a woman, but also because she’s the most maddeningly confounding lass he has ever met. Beautiful, feisty, and utterly skilful with horses, she draws him in perilously. Despite the blistering craving she arouses in him, he must keep his distance, for he has agreed to marry another for a clan alliance.

This is an entertaining story with a different premise from most Regency-era or Scottish romances. A young woman who wants to return to her Scottish homeland secretly answers an ad for a horse trainer to help with a difficult horse. Catriona wants one last summer to be free before she has to settle down and marry a boring English lord. When she meets Fingal McKendrick, she knows she’s found just the sort of man she would be happy to marry–too bad he is the man who is engaged to her sister!
I liked the interaction between Catriona and Fingal. The romance was steamy, but I wouldn’t call it erotic (other than the fact that they thought about sex 24/7). I did not care for the writing style. Words seemed to be used incorrectly and sentences were constructed awkwardly. In many cases, the dialog was too modern in tone. It didn’t seem like they were speaking as people in the early 1800s would.
I received an ARC from the author for review purposes.
I enjoyed this story very much. Catriona’s love for Scotland and determination to be there no matter what made this a fun read. Her love of horses and the men’s acceptance of her abilities made it better. Fingal was a great counterpoint for her. Both had other family duties and knew it could not be, but their hearts had to be followed. There were instances when I felt word choices were a bit inappropriate for the times, but it did not take away from the overall story. I hope to read more from this author.
I received a copy of this story as a gift, and this is my unsolicited review.
Emily Catriona McTavish longs for the Highlands where she lived until she was fourteen, before her English mother took her and her sister to London for the best education money could buy. After ten years away from her beloved country, she can take it no more. Fingal McKendrick has a problematic horse so advertises for a horse expert who is a woman called Emily Paddington.
Laird McTavish is encouraging his eldest daughter to marry an English earl & has betrothed his youngest to the second son of a powerful Laird. Neither lady is happy as Catriona longs for the Highlands & Anna loves London.
Fingal & Emily’s attraction almost combusts from their first meeting & the longer they work closely together training the stallion the more the attraction grows. A very enjoyable read from a new author to me, I read it in two sittings. It certainly won’t be the last book I read from the author. The story flows really well & the characters are well portrayed. I particularly liked Fingal he ticked ALL the boxes for me. There are misunderstandings along the way to their HEA. My thanks to the author for gifting me a copy.
A very sensual book with a lot of heat that flares up between a Laird and the Lady who comes to his rescue in taming his horse. An arranged marriage with her sister on his part and a deception of identity on her part, create obstacles to overcome for an HEA.

I am trying to find the words to effectively express how much I enjoyed this book, saying it was amazing just doesn’t do it justice but… IT IS AMAZING! This is the first book I’ve read by Lisa Torquay and if this story is anything to go by… I am going to be a big fan! Wow! Where to start?? The characters are fantastic, they draw you in! I loved Fingal and Catriona, they are incredibly captivating and the chemistry and heat between them had me fanning myself. Then there is the writing and I was so moved by it, I just felt everything as it was described. The storyline was fun and easy to follow. I really enjoyed that this was a story without a villain. I don’t want to give any spoilers so I will just say the book really just stands out in a lot of ways. I couldn’t put it down, once I started reading it. The Lass Beguiled The Laird is the definition of page turner!
