Ladies,I know how things look from the outside. I’m rich. I’m a successful surgeon. I’m handsome. I should have women lining up from here to New Jersey clawing for space in my bed, but there’s one huge catch. I’m f*cking awkward. Every time I get a date, I spoil it. Asked if she’s pregnant? Check. Forgot her name? Check. Bought a meat lover’s pizza for my vegan girlfriend? Check, check, check.… girlfriend? Check, check, check.
This is why my best friend, romance fanatic Allie Jenkins, has declared that she’s swooping in to save the day. She’s prepared a list of required reading straight from The Ripped Bodice, and I’m supposed to take notes, learn from the best, and put that shit into action. After all, practice makes perfect, right?
Wrong.

I love a good friends to lovers and this book did not disappoint, it was the first Lily Kate book that I’ve read and it was great. Allie and Jack are an unlikely pair that have been dancing around their feelings for each other for years, having grown up together and being friends only complicating the situation. The angst wasn’t huge and heartbreaking but it was just enough to make my heart hurt a little, the quiet longing they felt for each other. The little rejections that were simply miscommunications or to guard their hearts were so real. It was a bit of a slow burn too, right when I thought they were ready to get together something would interrupt, or get in the way, I was rooting for them so hard. This is a great book, sweet, swoony, funny, and yes plenty of awkward. Highly recommend, I will definitely read all of her books
2.5 Stars – I picked up this book because I love a socially awkward character in a romance! From reading the blurb, I thought the leading man was going to be more awkward than he is. This is more about how Allie is going to allow herself to be with Jack, than Jack being awkward around women. The writing was good and I enjoyed the story however felt the situation of Allie questioning herself was drawn out a bit too long. In the end it seemed to drag on and it took me a while to just finish the book. This is a friends-to-lovers story line.
~ Paragraphs and Petticoats ~
I loved Allie and how she was willing to help Jack with everything, and their friendship, I also loved how every Sunday night they had a little takeaway date. It was so cute, I loved how sarcastic she was. I loved that she was also awkward but in a different way to Jack. They were both awkward but differently. Together they worked perfectly.
Jack, oh my god, he was funny although some of the stuff he was doing was rude when it came to dates and offensive. It was hilarious. I loved how much he cared for Allie.
Jack and Allie both represent what it is like to love your best friend and yet be scared that if you act on it the relationship will change. Being that I’ve been in that situation I get where both Jack and Allie were coming from, it’s hard and you have to weigh in the good and the bad options for changing their relationship. Lucky for them two it worked and they managed to not destroy their friendship by having a relationship. At times it was dicey and sometimes at times they were both willing at different times to try and go back to being friends but with both fighting for each other. I loved their relationship and it’s a positive that it turned good for them. From best friends to love.
I love how Allie went into blogging about Jack and it was really good to see blogging in stories. I also loved how much books were mentioned and that she got Jack to read some romance stories!
Basically, in short, I loved everything about this novel and it was so cute and lovely and it was what I needed to read!
Awkward is the first book I’ve read by Lily Kate and I’m so excited that I have discovered a new to me author that I look forward to reading more from. This book is a funny, sweet and addictive friends to lovers romance. I seriously couldn’t put it down. I tried. I had some other things to do but I kept finding myself taking breaks from other tasks just so I could read a little bit more.
Jack and Allie have been best friends since they were children. Their families run in the same circle so you would think that they would naturally end up together, right? Nope. These two have friend zoned each other. To an extent. So when Allie offers up her advice to help Jack get over his extreme awkwardness that he has on dates, it should be easy. Yet, it isn’t. Both of them start to realize that their feelings for the other might just be more than platonic but neither of them really know what to do with it.
I adored both Jack and Allie. They are actually both awkward in their own way and are perfect for each other. From the first moment we get of them I knew they were perfect for each other and I was rooted for them from the start. It was cute how hard Allie was working to push Jack on a date when it was clear that all he wanted was her. And once he realized that, I started to swoon so hard over him. This one sentence allowed Jack to steal my heart. Once you read the book, you’ll understand just how amazing these four words are.
“Allie is my extraordinary.”
Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If you are looking for a sweet, sexy and addictive story, then Awkward is the book for you. You’ll laugh. You’ll swoon. Ultimately, you’ll fall in love with their awkwardness. I had so much fun with this and I can’t wait to read more from this author!
Lily Kate is quickly become one of my new favorite authors! This is my third book by her and I’ve loved them all! Her writing is simple but not boring and very engaging. The comedic moments are hilarious and I have a tendency to smile through an entire LK book!
This is a fun, friends-to-lovers book. I liked the pace of the story. Some friends-to-lovers romance’s take too long, meaning one friend is ready to go and the other is in denial for majority of the story. While this book starts out that way, Jack having clear feelings for Allie and her being in a bit of denial, her feelings progress and change and she starts to give in. Jack’s mother is the ‘villian’ of the story, and I felt that her behaviors gave Allie a good reason to get cold feet there for a second, but I was glad that Allie didn’t hold onto this doubt for an excessive amount of time.
I was hoping for them to talk about the drunk moment when they were teens when Allie told him she loved him and then threw up. She felt like he’d rejected her since he never brought it up, when knowing Jack’s character, he was probably being chivalrous!
There’s two sex scenes towards the end, and one heavy kissing/petting scene towards the middle. Not very long nor very detailed, though it is very clear what they are doing. The F word is used 5 or 6 times, other than that, not much language.
If you enjoy rom coms, you’ll enjoy Awkward!
