When Ross Hendershot decides to ride to Yuma in order to join the Rangers, he’s aware that the trip might be fraught with danger. Gradually trekking through some tough terrain he’s on the lookout for coyotes, snakes, blood-thirsty Indians & bandits. It’s not long before he has to shoot down his first threat & on arrival at his destination there’s more trouble waiting. Told in an easy to read tone, this novel has all the credentials of a true western, keeping you on tenterhooks as each chapter unfolds. Highly recommended.
The year is 1879 and Ross Hendershot decides that he wants to join the Arizona Rangers, which means a trek across the desert to Yuma. The descriptions of the area were so well told, there were times when I almost felt I was on the journey with him. As one would expect back in the days of the wild west, Hendershot’s trip is not without hazards of one sort or another. Nevertheless, when he reaches Yuma in one piece, he believes his troubles are over. But are they? Despite the wonderful welcome in Yuma, Ross soon finds his problems are not over…
I really enjoyed this novel. Whether you are into western novels or not, you should give this book a try. You certainly won’t be disappointed.
A disturbing book that makes the reader think. Genuinely worth reading,
A Long Dry Ride Through the Desert
Tall Man Rides – The Hendershot Series Book 1, by Berkeley Rourke, gives us a look at the dangerous old west and what it takes to stay alive. As far as I know, those were dangerous times. This makes for an interesting plot. That and a shortage of good women.
This story is written in true Berkeley Rourke fashion. That is, most of the story is written in narrative, as if he is telling the details directly to the reader. The story moves along quickly enough. As we follow the adventures of Ross Hendershot, we also learn not just the ways of the old west but the ways of staying alive in the desert as well.
The story brings out the beauty of the desert not made readily available in today’s world. I live in Arizona and haven’t been to Yuma, where Hendershot is headed. This story makes me want to trek down there to soak up a bit of its history and surrounding areas. I enjoyed this story and plan to read the next one.
I have to say I really enjoyed this amazing read. Although this book is a western, you don’t have to be a fan of westerns to enjoy the well-written story. Ross Hendershot is really a product of his times and in 1879 the west was rugged and wild. Luckily for Ross, he knows how to handle himself as he heads to Yuma in search of a job with the Arizona rangers. Along the way, Ross, riding his horse Roan will find excitement, rough times, and a romance. This book is well written and makes the reader feel like they have stepped back in time to what feels like a different world. Some writers try to make the west seem like a romantic place, but actually, it was filled with hard times and rough men. Thanks to the author for writing a real western that tells a more accurate picture of the times and tales of the old west.
