Yes, this book is as cool as it sounds. The author took a beloved legend and made it a little more modern, and combined it with a very traditional group of slayers. Old meets new and when you’ve got all that excitement set in a high school getting ready for prom, well… get ready for some fun times. Morgan was likable, a little sassy when things got tough. I love MCs who don’t work out at first despite the hot chemistry and this one played out in a yummy way I haven’t come across yet. The characters were cool but a few drove me insane, especially one of them. However, what made this book special for me was when Morgan thought of that irritating person in a positive light. This person drove me up the wall, alright? But if Morgan can think such a nice thing about them, well then it changes my opinion on her. The story was fun, you get a lot of high school drama and young love and PROM and overall, if you love all of that, you should definitely check this out.
This is one of my favorite types of summer reads, and I love that there are 2 follow up books set in the same world!!
This is a great introduction into this lively and fun vampire/slayer series.
Louise Cypress is a new author for me, but based on her Bite Me (The Puritan Coven Series Book 1), I’m promising myself that we will become well acquainted. Talk about opposites attracting: sexy new vamp vs vamp slayer definitely counts. This novel truly is, quite simply, wonderful. It just what I wanted and was well written and with a great plot and great cast of characters. Morgan and Van, the leads here, are perfectly crafted and their supporting cast is also superb. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises – the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to book 2.
In this comical three-book series, Cypress explores the depth of friendship, intimacy…and the undead. What would you do if one day you woke up and nothing fit you the way it did yesterday? Your bra was two sizes too small. Your shirts were skin tight. Your face clear of blemishes…the kind that come from being a teenager. Would you chalk it up to a dream and try to wake up? Would you go with the flow and say that it was your diet? What about your hormones finally getting the hint to start moving things around? Never in a thousand years would you believe it to be because of supernatural causes right? Cypress has some of the classic lore intertwined with some original scenes in the mix, making the first installment in this series one that will be hard for readers to put down.
Morgan is your average high school geek. At least, that is how she sees herself—not worthy of a boyfriend for prom if it can’t be with her ex-boyfriend—who coincidentally is with someone else that is absolutely gorgeous. When she is invited over to Lukas’s house, her mother’s new boyfriend, she is forced to play nice with his daughter, Esma. Esma Siban seems like she has the perfect life—money, looks, and brains—why would she ever want to be friends with Morgan? But, after that fateful night, everything changes. The last thing that she remembers seeing is a young boy, apparently a distant relative of the Sibans, who rains in on her personal space when in the bathroom after dinner—and then darkness beckons. Waking up to her own room and hearing that she was in the hospital for a little while due to an illness and a concussion—Morgan must fit the pieces together to regain her memory. Mysteriously, these new changes start to take effect over her body and people at school start to notice her, but is that necessarily a good thing if she attracts the wrong company? The new exchange student, Van Xander, is handsome and way out of her league—yet, she can’t get him out of her head. With Esma’s warnings to stay away from him, that only makes Morgan want to be with him even more. What harm could it do? It’s not like he has a vendetta or a secret motive for wanting to be close to her right?
Cypress has a terrific story-line, filled with creativity, originality and fascinating characters. The pace is very quick, but easy to follow and enjoyable. The story appears to be written fairly well and both narrators, Cendese and Buhr, are able to captivate their audience with their vocal differentiation and tone. This installment does not spare the drama that goes on in a teenager’s life, but it is meant to be satirical and geared toward a young adult audience. With that being mentioned, there are some scenes that appear childish but the intention is that it is from a teenager’s point of view. If you are a reader of young adult and paranormal romance, this may be a good fit. This is the first installment in the Puritan Coven Series; therefore, the reader can dive right in.
An audiobook was purchased by Turning Another Page through iTunes and in no way affects the honesty of this review. We provide a five-star rating to Bite Me by Louise Cypress.
Helsing Incorporated is tasked with controlling the vampire population. If the vampires are deemed safe (known as Puritans) than they are allowed to “live”, otherwise they are terminated. Van arrives in La Jolla, to investigate a local coven but he finds more than he expected.
Morgan was just your typical nerdy high schooler, but after contracting a mysterious illness, she undergoes some “changes”. Now she is exposed to a whole new world, but will she survive?
Louise Cypress has a great basis for a new series. The characters and setting are interesting. My interest is piqued and I look forward to seeing where the series goes.
There were two narrators for this book. While both did a nice job, I definitely preferred Reba Buhr’s performance. It just seemed to flow better.
I received this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
Bite me was a fun, fast-paced story that kept me up well past my bedtime several nights last week as I always had to read just one more chapter. As a writer, I enjoyed the fresh spin on a vampire story and the well-developed characters. I found Morgan, the protagonist, to be a very relatable teen girl. Although she became a model-gorgeous, triple D-breasted teenager on the outside after she contracted vampiritis, she was still the same smart, dorky, self-doubting girl on the inside.
As a mother, I like that the book has a story that appeals to an older reader (teen or adult), but the content doesn’t make me cringe imagining my own daughter reading it. I also like that Bite Me portrays women as strong characters (often more powerful than the men in their lives). It’s a book I feel good giving to my young teen daughter to read.
3.5 stars . I thought this was a cute young adult book. I like Van and Morgan’s characters l. I also loved how this wasn’t your typical vampire book. Great story.
If you enjoy vampire books then this series may be your thing. Though there are some things I didn’t personally prefer, I thought it was an enjoyable quick read with plenty of interesting supporting characters to learn about in future stories. Some surprises and lots of quirky situations that make Morgan and Van easy to like.
As the mother of a teenage girl, I would not want my daughter to read this book. The first issue is how materialistic it is. Name brands are dropped constantly to the point that I almost wondered if the author was paid for product placement ads.
The second issue is Morgan’s “hotness”. Having a beautiful heroine is fairly standard in romance novels. I completely understand that but Morgan’s physique is stated to consist of a DD chest and 18 inch chest. She of course wasn’t noticed by any boys but one until she developed this body as a side effect to her vampiritis or before she stopped wearing glasses. Our girls are bombarded by these impossible bodies in photoshopped images daily, they shouldn’t be inundated with them while reading as well.
Ms Cypress has an interesting story which made me smile with the subtle nod to Bunnicula, but the end felt rushed (we didn’t even get to experience Morgan’s purity test) and some aspects were too easy (what happens when Sunny arrives as well as how easily the antagonist was defeated) but it was engaging enough to make me curious about Esma and Cassandra’s stories.
I like the line of the story, how the vampires move around the world, all the secrecy among the characters and most of the relationship among them. It did remained me a lot of Buffy, both the tv show and the movie. The book has a good set up for a series that seems to be fun an entertaining. Said that I still find parts that I didn’t like that much.
This was a sweet, funny story. I enjoyed the characters and the plot.
I read this book so much faster than I anticipated! I was hoping for a happy ending with Morgan and Van and was so enthralled reading their story!
This is a great clean book with a little romance and a lot of paranormal! I loved it!
A fun read in the world of vampires. Obviously being bit has some perks and some drawbacks. Morgan Taylor-Jackson gets to experience them all.
I started out thinking that this would be a great book. Girl gets turned into a vampire but doesn’t know it. Vampire slayer falls in love with her. Could be pretty good. But then Morgan gets bitten by a 4 year old, who’s actually 14 and likes to see teenage girls turned into vampires because they get bigger boobs? That totally turned me off from the book. And that is just really sick and creepy. I did read the entire book, and it was an ok story. But the ending was horrible! Half the school dies or gets turned into vampires at Prom? And all of a sudden things with her mom are great, when they’ve been fighting through the whole book? Not one of my favorite reads.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect, especially when I saw that it was about teenagers. Forging ahead I realized that the book was pretty good, far better than I expected. I even want to continue reading the series so that bodes well for this book.
Great character structure with a well rounded storyline. I would recommend it to others and will even consider letting my 11 year old granddaughter read it since it is clean.
I received a copy of this book for exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book from page one. I was nervous because her other books fell a little short for me.
This book follows Van, a hot vampire slayer, and Morgan, a nerdy girl who might be the only senior who has never been kissed. I connected with Morgan a lot. She likes reading Jane Austin and hanging out with her best friend Gwen. Her parents are divorced and her relationship with her mother is definitely a tough one. Van’s slayer family is always on the move. His newest assignment is the man Morgans mom will soon be moving in with.
The characters relationships felt very real and there were plenty of moments that made me laugh. I cannot wait for book 2.
This was pretty interesting. Much different than normal vampire books I’ve read before.
