Horse trainer Heather Brown is strong, confident, and successful, and as far as ranch hand Jeremiah Mackey is concerned, she has it all. So why does she keep walking away from good men? It’s Heather’s thirtieth birthday, and she’s newly single. Again. With a talent for finding Mr. Right-for-Everyone-Else, it’s time to try something—or someone—new. Jeremiah certainly fits the bill. He’s different … bill. He’s different than any man she’s dated, but with her family openly hostile to him, how can it last?
Jeremiah has made a lot of mistakes in his life, and he’s spent time behind bars because of them. But eleven years ago, he was given a chance to turn his life around, and he took it without looking back. With Heather by his side, his future is looking brighter than ever… until someone from his past starts playing deadly games.

Both Heather and Jeremiah had things to think about on what turns out to be a day of anniversaries. It was Heather’s birthday and she had ditched yet another suitor, whilst Jeremiah was reviewing past mistakes. In a moment of camaraderie, they agree to celebrate Heather’s birthday and the flame that has been flickering between them, flares to life. I loved Jeremiah’s beautiful soul, his compassion and understanding of Heather, as well as his firm but respectful approach towards her family. Despite Jeremiah’s past, Heather has had an equally difficult growing up experience. She has never met the expectations of her family and they have discredited her at every turn. When Jeremiah’s past is unleashed on them, everyone is put at risk and when the chips are down, their true characters come to the fore. I enjoyed this well-written and suspenseful romance, and although it is part of a series, it comes to a joyful close. I read this book as part of the “A Cowboy Kind of Night” box set, which I received as a gift and this is my honest and voluntary review.
I loved Jeremiah & Heather’s story,
& absolutely enjoyed reading it. It is another great romance suspense book,
in the Hammond Brothers series.
Jeremiah has made mistakes in the past.
His life changed for the better, when
Aaron offered him on job on the Lazy H Ranch. The Hammond family love Jeremiah, like a son.
Heather has always had a rough relationship with her family. They want her life to be perfect. Marry the perfect man. Have the perfect kids.
Jeremiah & Heather have been friends
for awhile. They’ve always liked each other, but the timing was never right.
As they spend together, getting to know each other, their connection is undeniable.
Unfortunately, it seems his past is catching up with him, for doing the right thing, all those year’s ago.
The story pulled me in, & kept me
reading, wanting to find out what
happens next.
HIGHLY RECOMMEND FOR EVERYONE!!!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Booksprout and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
This is an amazing book. I could hardly put it down. The characters were so realistic that I fell in love with them. What amazing chemistry. The plot was very smooth and flowed beautifully. I have not read any of the prior books of this series but based on the interaction of the secondary characters, their stories sound too good to miss. I was so sad to see the end of this book. I just wanted it to continue. I really hate when a great story ends. It is like saying good-bye to close friends. Highly recommend this one!
This may be my favorite by far of all the books in the Northstar and Hammond Brothers Series.
There are so many reasons I loved this book, so I’ll name a few. First of all, the main characters are two fallible people, people who have made mistakes in their lives, yet have worked to make a better life for themselves as well as those around them.
The second reason I loved this book is because it’s about family, the ones you’re born into and the ones of the heart.
Ms. O’Connell has such a wonderful way of making the characters real and the scenery come to life, so much so that you feel you’re right there in Northstar and all the families.
This story has it all, a plot, a mystery, and a romance, not to mention a chance to catch up all your other Northstar characters. I’m pretty sure I’m going to be rereading both the Hammond Brothers and the Northstar series very soon. (less)
