This book had a strong sense of Game of Thrones to me, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Some of the secondary characters have kind of dropped off the map, which makes me wonder if they’ll be coming back, or if they were just passing through. Noone major is missing though, so it’s not a big loss. A lot of chess pieces are moving around which makes me wonder about the long-game. Which details are essential and which are just a part of the setting? It adds to the mystery and intrigue to keep you reading.
This is the best series I’ve ever have read about dragons. Totally loved reading all of the dragon school series. This is my first time reading this arthur’s work . She is now a one click buy.
Although Amel just rescued Savette and Leng from the Dusk Covenant, with the help of a few friends, they’re not in the clear just yet; in fact they are far from it. Not only could they be facing expulsion from Dragon School for going out on their own and against their Grandis’ orders, one of Amel’s friends’ life is hanging dangerously on the line and the only thing it seems they can do is wait it out and put her care in the hands of strangers.
Amel has people on all sides of her demanding her loyalty, and once again she is put in a position where she has to pick a side. But which one should she choose? Her main priorities are keeping those she loves alive and safe, stopping the Dusk Covenant from doing any more harm and making things right with Dragon School so that she may reach her next rank, as sworn, and then hopefully to color.
Luckily, when they think theres no where left to turn, they are found by a few fellow dragon riders that just happen to know Leng. When they are taken into their hidden head quarters to heal and discuss everything, Amel learns about another secret group called the Lightbringers, but who are they really? On top of that, she meets a famously known purple dragon rider, and he offers to take her on as his apprentice. If she agrees, she would be gaurenteed sworn and might not have to worry about facing Grandis Elfar’s wrath (or her strange new attitude). However, she would also be put on much more deadly missions than the average purple dragon rider would be, and there would be no backing out – ever.
Amel has a lot to think about, and some very important decisions to make. Can she stay true to herself and to those she loves, while picking a side in this (possible) upcoming war? She’s the “center of the storm” and every choice she makes impacts those around her greatly – so which path will she choose?
Sworn is the fifth episode in Sarah K. L. Wilson’s Dragon School serial. This is a fast paced YA fantasy story.
A LOT happens in the previous novellas, but I feel like SO much more happens in this one. I said before that The Ruby Ilses was my favorite thus far, but Sworn quickly replaced that. Amel is being pulled in all directions by people who either want her loyalty or want her dead: Dragon School, Prince Rakturan, the Lightbringers, her friends, the Dusk Covenant, Herself… But it’s done in such a careful, yet exciting, way that I never felt confused by any of it. This is only the fifth novella out of twenty, but I feel like this episode really brings us deeper into the Dominion and how everything works – to the core of the story. I’m in awe of how Sarah K.L. Wilson can fit SO much in so little space and do it as smoothly as she does.
We meet a couple of new characters this time around: Ephretti and Dashira (sister dragon riders) and Hubric Duneshifter (he and his dragon Kyrowat are considered legends). We finally get to meet the Dominar, instead of always just hearing about him, too. All of these characters are interesting in their own way and they all add something more to the story. I have a good feeling we’ll be getting to know them better in the next novella, and I can’t wait to see what they do.
I’ve mentioned the romance between Amel and Leng, and how I felt it was too rushed and didn’t think they fit together well. In this installment, the two of them grow closer in some ways, and while I’m still not totally sure on how I feel about them as a possible couple I’m starting to accept it more. I love that they are choosing to wait (though mostly it’s because neither of them want to lose their titles, haha), and I would like to have more time seeing them interact and bond. I’m still a little mad at Leng for always treating Amel like she incapable of being a dragon rider. I loved that she confronts Leng on this in Sworn and I hope he starts seeing her in a different light.
There have been so many secrets, hidden agendas and true loalties that have come to light, but there are so many more that have popped up and are waiting to be unveiled. It’s on to the next for me!
The Dragon School serial is free on KU!
No breaks for Amel. After rescuing her friends, she still has to worry for their safety, among many other things. I am eager to start on the next book.
This book was provided to me free of charge. I am voluntarily reviewing it.
Dragon School: Sworn is a quick and easy read. The author is creative with interesting characters. Being a Dragon Rider sounds real exciting & maybe a little dangerous. I really enjoy these characters and can’t wait to read more about them.
OMG so cool. Sworn is epic. Amel becomes a apprentice, and Savette is change drastically. We learn about new figures to Amels chessboard of her life as a dragonrider. Im actually really liking The Dark Prince Lol. This is my new favorite to this epic Serial. Go Sarah
Amel has done the impossible: she saved not only Savette, but she also saved Leng! Both were taken by The Dusk Covenant which is a group of rogue Magickas with a dark, hidden agenda. They kidnapped Savette and captured Leng, both being tortured… Savette, mentally and Leng physically. With the help of Lenora and Raolcan, both are free of the Magickas and The Dusk Covenant, only to discover The Lightbringers, a group of Dragon Riders who fight The Dusk Covenant. However, like The Dusk Covenant, once you know too much, you can never leave. In the process of rescuing Savette and Leng, Amel gets a helping hand from the Dark Prince, Prince Rakturan, who was also set on saving Savette.
While Leng is being healed, we meet Dragon Rider, Hubric Duneshifter, a fellow purple and leader of The Lightbringers. While not happy with the circumstances, he takes Amel on as an apprentice. Amel has been tasked with being a double agent. Can she do it? Will she do it? Where will her loyalties lie? As Amel swears her loyalty to the Dominar, things go horribly wrong. What is Amel’s next move? Are Raolcan and Savette okay? Can Savette be healed?
I’m slowly coming around to Prince Rakturan. While he is not my favorite, you do get to know him a little bit more. Also, there’s a small scene between Amel and Leng and I need more. Talk about two people who deserve and have earned happiness! Hopefully, they get what they are looking for, in spite of the impending war being waged. A select chosen few will fight this battle. Are they up to the task?
It’s a wonderful series!
