Life and Death are at war in the newest dark fantasy novel by USA Today Bestselling Author Frost Kay.
Pirates. Sirens. Revenge.
Vengeance is Lilja’s middle name. That wasn’t always the case, but battling evil has a funny way of changing people.
Her instructions were clear: protect her people’s secret at all costs and destroy anyone in her path. It was simple, really. You cross her, you die.
… destroy anyone in her path. It was simple, really. You cross her, you die.
Life was black and white for the pirate captain until an innocent ruins everything by blundering into her life. She should’ve let the handsome stranger drown, he’d seen too much. But something stays her hand and she reluctantly saves the human, risking the one thing she’s protected all her life.
A secret that could destroy an entire race.

Really interesting take on a siren/mermaid type fantasy creature – and a view into a character that is touched on in the series – can be read as a standalone, though.
I read this book from the Fire and Fantasy book collection. I happily discovered it after reading Rebel’s Blade and Crown’s Shield. This book not only gives the reader a little more background into Aermian’s history, it also introduces you to Sage’s parents before her older brother was born. But mostly this story is about her uncle Hayjen and how he met Lilja. Hayjen is a very caring and protective figure and Lilja wants only to help in any way she can to seek a better life for others. Frost Kay’s character development is unsurpassed. You get to see into their thoughts and feelings with their personal POV’s. And thankfully, unlike Ms Kay’s first two books in this series, this one does NOT have a major cliffhanger. It does, however, only delves into a very brief beginning of their life together. I would like to read further into their adventures at sea and their life up until Rebel’s Blade. This book can be read as a prequel or at anytime in between or after both books.
Siren’s Lure is a standalone companion novella to The Aermian Feuds. It’s a gripping story about how Hayjen meets Pirate Captain Lilja and their rocky start. Frost Kay is a truly amazing storyteller who knows how to create well-rounded characters and place them in intense situations. The story was truly a page-turner. The only part I didn’t enjoy were the flashbacks and flashforwards, which made the sequencing difficult to follow.
I enjoyed it b
Not for me
I can’t say exactly what it is about this book that left me wanting more. But I do…
Much of the story and the characters in it were at least a bit predictable. But the way the characters and the interactions between them was written managed to draw me in. I want to know what happens next to our flawed but persistent protagonists.
I feel like this entire book should have been a very long prologue for what would then be an epic sea adventure roughly as long as something penned by Tolkien.
The classic quote about always leaving people wanting more? Nailed that.
I loved it .
I like the idea for the book and I loved the strong figures – woman and man and little girl. I found the concept of woman pirate rescuing the man and child unique and refreshing. However, the author jumping back and forth in time, especially just a few weeks in time, unbearable. If it was just a flash back, it might have worked. However, too much time was spent in each setting and I would just get used to one when it would switch to the other, making the book very confusing. It completely took me out of the story every time, which ruined it for me. I did not come even close to finishing the book. If the writer would change this book and put it in chronological order, I would be happy to read it.
Great book, I look forward to reading more about these characters!
The story was not engaging. The writing wasn’t awful just not great. The characters two dimensional. We never got to know anyone well enough to like them. The villain was poorly defined. It was a good thing the story was short or I wouldn’t have finished it.
A little difficult to follow the jumping time line at first, but overall a good story line. Great ground work for a series.
This short story introduced me to the world of the Aermian Feuds. I haven’t read any other books in this series and I can’t wait to get started with the series. I was introduced to a beautiful and mythical world and though there weren’t much of the creatures I love I was given a backstory which I now feel prepares me for the rest.

A fun tale of pirates and mermaids in a fantasy world with mystery, intrigue and a nice happily ever after!
I first read this book after having already started and completed the full length novelizations in the Aermien Feuds series. After reading this novella I understood the world of Sage & Tehl so much better.
I believe this happens a lot with authors, they begin writing a series and two or three books in they write a novella about an exciting side character that broadens the world building and increases the enjoyment of the overall story.
This is definitely the case with the character of Lilja. Her origin story made the series complete and more understandable. Missing pieces dropped into place and fleshed the series out considerably. The events unfolding in the Aermian Feuds, the war, the resistance, the secrets etc suddenly made everything was crystal-clear. I already highly recommend this series by author Frost Kay and I would recommend to anybody starting out that they find ‘Siren’s Lure’ and read it first, before ‘Rebel’s Blade’, Book One of The Aermian Feuds.
All around this novella was so much fun and the characters of Lilja and Hayjen are just brilliant. I think they should have their own stand alone series!
I had already finished both Rebel’s Blade and Crown’s Shield before starting this one so I knew who many of the characters were already. I loved how this one explained a bit more of the background for both Lilja and Hayjen though I was shocked when I learned just who Hayjen really was. Definitely a must read!
