A sweet story of a young woman, Isabella, whose father’s sudden death resulted in loss of everything to her father’s unscrupulous business partner-her home and everything in it. Suddenly bereft of family, income and home, she had to look for a position to support herself. Her father’s attorney found a position of governess for her in an estate far from London, her friends and all she had known. Off she sets for a new life in a lowly position in society, to be a governess in a vast household.
She is soon made to made to feel the heat of bitterness from the head housekeeper, who lords it over Isabella, placing her remotely from the governess’s room in which she deserved to be placed. She humbles herself and tries her best to be the teacher her little French charge deserves and needs. However, she is not to be left in peace by the business partner who took everything from her-he her wants her for himself. If he can’t have her, then he sets out to ruin her for anyone else and maligns her integrity with an ad in the paper asking for information on her, claiming she stole from him! This ad sets in play a series of events that results in Isabella’s leaving her position abruptly and running to the home of friends who kindly took her in and provided for her.
However, the youngest son of the household had fallen in love with Isabella and heroically comes to her aid to rid her of the menace of the corrupt business partner and his scurrilous claims. A happy ending for Isabelle.
This sweet story has no cursing nor intimate scenes that might offend anyone, making it appropriate for young adults interested in a love story with a happy ending.
AN ABSOLUTE MUST READ!!!
An amazing, easy to follow, well paced read that will keep you captivated and frozen to the edge of your seat. You’re drawn in from the first page to the very last word as the tale unfolds. With world’s colliding and fears riding high this read keeps your attention as the characters personalities come together with twists and turns that will keep you frozen to the edge of your seat. Abby shows just how deep her creative talent goes as she brings this tale to life.
The title tells you what is going to happen but,oh my, HOW it happens is the story! You’ll laugh and you’ll cry and you’ll keep anxiously turning pages to find out how it will all end. Isabella and Christian are honorable, lovable, intelligent and troubled. Wonderful writing with unexpected plot twists. This is Abby Ayles at her best!
A dastardly villain and a Mr. ‘do good’ Duke says it all!
I’ve read many of Abby Ayles’ books but I think this one by far is one of her best if not the best book. I was glued to the pages and stayed up late to finish it even though I could hardly keep my eyes open. The characters in this book were very well developed. The governess, Isabella, was a very sweet and caring governess to her charge and in turn her charge, Miss Jacqueline, a very sweet 6 year old, reciprocated her affection. Her older sister, Lady Abigail, also loved being in her company. Furthermore, little did Isabella know that the future Duke had fallen in love with her. But the dastardly Mr. Smith who inherited Isabella’s late father’s estate, had sent her off with practically only the bare necessities. With many twists and turns and future surprises, we are all kept in suspense until the very end. Definitely an HEA worth the wait. If there is one criticism of this book it would be use of certain modern phrases and a few proofreading errors but they did not detract from the story. This is well worth the read and one I feel very confident in recommending.
I really enjoyed this book and would like to read more by this author.
A good read. A death can certainly alter a dependants life choices in unexpected ways.
Nice enjoyable story.
Isabelle has everything taken from her by her father’s partner. Worse, he had lecherous intentions and to avoid that, Isabelle takes up the job as a governess in a far away place in a Duke’s palace.
In the new place also there are some hitches. But there things begin to change as Isabelle sees the Duke’s son.
The story has a lot of things going for it, as Isabelle finds the courage to help herself in times like these. The writing is great and the characters and their interactions with each other also brought a smile.
The historical fiction was a nice, quick, simple read. Liked it.
