Wow. Tara Tanner, an innocent citizen in a regulated society with dreams of becoming a part of the powers in control, finds herself suddenly attacked and enslaved. Tara must do everything her trainer/conditioner orders her to do in exactly the way she is told. This is part of her conditioning to obey without question or thought. Her trainer, Dr. Mark Kilroy is the master trainer of the resistance and he is very good at what he does. Mark is known as The Marquis of Mayhem for his brutally exacting process of conditioning his trainees, and uses sex to drive their will to obey and to control them with denial of what they desire if that is what’s needed at any given time. Tara must be trained in order for her to survive the direction she must go in, to live after her disasterous abduction.
I can’t really say too much as the latter part of the story has a surprise in store for us that you won’t even see coming.
I definitely enjoyed the interaction between Tara and Mark, it was erotic and terrifying at times but kept the sexy, hot experiences coming.
This gets a good solid 4.5.
Loki Renard has given us an incredibly dystopian world that is fascinating to read. In this world, you have a country where corporations have taken over the country. You have to be everyone’s friend, spend money, and spend plenty of time on social media. Everyone is monitored and you either work for the government or you are nothing.
Tara is bound and determined to get a job in the government. Her parents worked hard to save what money they could to send her to a good college. Tara has done everything that she possibly can to be good enough to be in the government. That all changes one day when she’s kidnapped in broad daylight.
Mark is a member of the resistance. He has learned how to break and train people so that they are secret weapons. Usually, he does this to guilty or powerful people so that they can be useful. When Tara gets brought in, he’s put into a position where he may have to train someone who is completely innocent of everything. His choice is to train her or have her brain wiped, which could really wipe out everything. He makes the choice to train her.
This book is so hot and fascinating. Loki has given us a story that both makes you feel and makes you think. There are some real twists and turns in here that I completely didn’t expect. This is a yummy little dark treat.
Wow, this was hot. But it also ticked me off, outraged me. And then I got happy towards the end. It has a twist at about 80 percent of the story that had me yelling “YES”. I hate spoilers so that’s all I’ll say about it. I really hope Loki is planning a series for this, (begs pretty please with a cherry on top.)
This book was given to me for free at my request from the publisher or author and I provided this unbiased voluntary review.
Loki Renard has created a spellbinding, erotic, dystopian story as timely as 1984, Brave New World, or The Handmaid’s Tale!
In a not too distant future, life as we know it has disappeared. Individual freedom no longer exists. The government? Bought and paid for. Constant bombardment by government propaganda, nonstop mandatory social media interaction, technology recording every moment of every life are the norm. This is Tara Tanner’s existence. Her ambition? To win a coveted government position, her only way to become one of the elite. For years, she’s worked every angle, taken every chance. Her success is all but assured. But one reckless decision by a total stranger in a dark alley may destroy it all. Drugged and kidnapped, she awakens to a bizarre nightmare that’s all too real. Confined in an anonymous cell, accused of the unthinkable, she comes face-to-face with a nameless, indifferent, gorgeous man. Dr. Mark Kilroy is the infamous “Marquis of Mayhem” of the underground resistance. Tara’s totally unaware of his identity. She thinks this is all some loyalty test to prove her worth. She soon learns nothing could be farther from the truth. Mark has a cold-hearted, chilling agenda, and he intends to strip Tara of everything. Her life and memories may be left intact, but her body and soul lie in his very capable and unrelenting hands. Reprogramming her is paramount, and anything goes. Breaking her is Mark’s sole objective, and he’ll use any method are his disposal. But Mark’s never had to contend with a subject like Tara. Something’s off, missing. Mark doesn’t have all the facts. And there’s something about Tara, a magnetism, an irresistible pull, that draws him to her in ways he’s never known. This is no game. Lives hang in the balance. He can’t afford the slightest mistake. Is Mark slipping? Has he lost his touch? Or is Tara truly beyond his abilities to condition? Failure’s not an option. As Tara and Mark reach a final showdown, both learn that nothing is as it seems. What’s real? How much is lies? Can either escape unscathed? Can any of this work? One thing is certain. If Mark is wrong, both his and Tara’s lives hang in the balance, and nothing will ever be the same!
Loki Renard is phenomenal. She’s one of the very few authors who’s an automatic buy for me. This book surprised me on so many levels. The premise is intriguing and, at times, hits far too close to reality for comfort. The characters are charismatic and beguiling. Tara seems a total innocent with only one goal. Get the coveted government job and help her parents. And Mark? His intentions are all too apparent. Break Tara, strip her of all that makes her unique, and remake her for the resistance’s purposes. I loved the incredible interactions between Mark and Tara. Their chemistry is off-the-charts hot! But Ms. Renard has also woven layers upon layers of intrigue, hidden agendas, and unknown secrets into a tapestry of incredible depth. The truth is inextricably blended with so many lies that everything is in doubt. This is truly a masterful work that hooked me from the very beginning. Loki Renard has created a story that could be pulled from the headlines of today’s news. That ability is incredibly rare. In my opinion, this is one of Loki Renard’s best books. I want to give this book ten stars! It’s just that fantastic. Congratulations, Ms. Renard, for giving us such a rich and captivating reading experience!
One final note. Be an informed reader! This is an ADULT book. It contains explicit language and sexual scenes. If you don’t enjoy this genre, this may not be the book for you. There are book synopses and reviews available on Goodreads and all booksellers’ websites. Use these resources. DON’T LEAVE A NEGATIVE REVIEW WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON’T ENJOY THE BOOK. It’s not fair to the author. She works very hard to provide a quality work product. If you know you’ll object to the book’s subject matter before you buy it, you’re doing yourself and the author an extreme disservice.
Thanks for reading my review and happy reading
A new book by Loki Renard which takes place in the not so distant future. Companies have taken over the government and the people are nothing more than consumers.. being in the government means you are set for life. Resistance is alive.
This is the world where Mark and Tara meet. The contact between the two of them is very intense. It is just them, two strong wills battling it out. Both have pasts which have shaped them. There is a lot of Fireworks but also tender moments. Tara made me laugh.
There are some surprising twists and turns.
I received this book from Stormy Night Publications as an advance review copy
I liked the premise. Very Orwellian. However, when Mark spoke of how harsh the training would be, compared to other dark romances, it wasn’t really all that harsh. I was somewhat disappointed for what I got versus what my imagination had conjured.
This was a refreshing read
Smart and witty heroine – targeted to be conditioned
A dominant handler who has to make a choice wipe her mind or attempt to program the subject
What follows is a sweet and at times shocking romance that leaves the reader with a case of the warm fuzzies
Adult material
