A riveting novel from the author of the critically acclaimed Learning to Swim and an Anthony Award nominee for Best Novel While she’s watching the crew build the Winter Carnival ice palace, Troy Chance sees a body encased in the frozen lake—a man she recognizes as the boyfriend of one of her roommates. When she is assigned to write a feature on his life and mysterious death, Troy discovers he was … death, Troy discovers he was the missing son of a wealthy Connecticut family. Trying to unravel what brought him to this Adirondack village, she joins forces with his girlfriend and his sister, who comes to town to find answers. But as Troy digs deeper, it’s clear someone doesn’t want the investigation to continue. And when she uncovers long-buried secrets that could shatter the serenity of the small town and many people’s lives, she’ll be forced to decide how far her own loyalties reach.
“Sara J. Henry brilliantly draws us into a terrifying but ultimately affirmative novel in which love, friendship, and the shining truth about who we really are redeem an otherwise hopeless universe.” —Howard Frank Mosher, award-winning author of God’s Kingdom

I really enjoyed the way the story led you along. Nothing was as it seemed to be in the characters.
This is a book I couldn’t put down. A great mystery in more ways than one! While news writer Troy Chance is watching the crew build the Winter Carnival ice palace, she sees a body encased in the frozen lake—a man she recognizes as the boyfriend of one of her roommates. When she is assigned to write a feature on his life and mysterious death, Troy …
It kept my attention.
This was an entertaining read but not a great read. Characters were a little underdeveloped and one-dimensional.
A haunting book that kept me turning the pages and left me aching but satisfied at the end. I REALLY want this author to continue this series. Troy Chance’s story can’t be finished!
Grab this book while it is on sale. This is a fabulous read if you love mystery, suspense and wonderful writing. The way the author crafts the story and develops the characters, the setting and the tone is fantastic. I felt like I was right besides Troy as answers are searched. I felt the bite of the wind, heard the crunch of footsteps on the snow …
Unbelievable characters
It has a solid plot line but is very slow moving. The main character is pretty chill. She doesn’t get all that excited or worked up about anything.
This writer is so gifted. The characters had depth, history, personality and purpose. I will definitely be following this author.
Predictable plot with no twists. Disappointed
I loved the style of writing in this book. What a great new author! I look forward to more!
Following up her well written, engaging and highly successful debut book Learning to Swim, Sarah J Henry has established herself as one of my favorites with A Cold and Lonely Place. Richly textured with strong characterization and a tight, believably surprising plot. Hopefully I won’t have to wait long for her next.
A journalist happens to be at a frozen lake in the Adirondacks when a body is found. She recognizes the body as the boyfriend of her roommate. Assigned to write about the deceased, the story follows her investigation and finally the cause of death. Not atmospheric or captivating as I’d hoped.
Great book!! The murder mystery just sucks you in, and you become attached to the characters, so you share their loss, as well as their hopes and dreams. The story grabs you from the start, and with the witty twists and turns along the way, it has a satisfactory ending. You might not want to start this book on a “school night”!! Lol. I am really …
Like a cheesy movie
I enjoyed reading this book….even the opening was unusual. It was at times very unpredictable. I would recommend this book to others mystery lovers.
Outstanding read.
Loved the book! Very quick read and keeps you interested.
What would you do if someone you know, not well, is found frozen under a layer of the ice on a lake? Would you be shocked or horrified or just wonder and let it go?
Troy is a reporter with a mind that wants answers to questions and she loves the hunt. But Troy didn’t expect to see the body of Tobin in the ice……Troy has a home she rents rooms …
