Big Bad Cowboy is the first book in Carly Bloom’s “Once Upon a Time in Texas” series and it was a great opening novel for this new series. Bloom is also a new author to me, and I very much enjoyed her writing.
Travis Blake moved away from his hometown of Big Verde, Texas a dozen years ago and while gone, he served in the military and just recently left the the armed forces. Like most people, he had a plan for when he got out, but as they say, best laid plans don’t always pan out. One phone call changed everything.
Growing up, Travis came from a family where there were more problems than not. His father was a drunk, although the one thing in life he managed to hold on to was the family’s ranch. Not to mention his brother, Scott who ended up in jail. Travis is bound and determined that he is not going to follow in their footsteps and he is going to make something of himself. When the mother of Scott’s son passes away, Travis is left to be the five year old’s guardian, and he also needs to prepare the ranch for sale.
Maggie is the local landscaper and owner of Petal Pushers and she’s also had a crush on Travis since high school. Since he was a few years older than she was, she wasn’t on his radar, so that crush got pushed to the back of her mind. When she learns he’s back in town to settle his father’s affairs, the crush resurfaces, well, that is until she finds out that he will be doing some landscaping work around town. She’s fully convinced that he is going to be stealing clients right out from under her and she won’t stand for it! He is completely off-limits in her mind.
When these two are near one another, the sparks fly, but will their professional entanglement douse those sparks prematurely?
I really enjoyed this book – it was fun, flirty, sexy and fabulous. Not only were the main characters great, but I loved the members of the community as well. They were all around good people and they came together and helped their fellow citizens in their time of need. And, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention little Henry. He was fantastic and totally stole my heart!
If you like alpha cowboys and small town romances, this book is for you. I’m now a Carly Bloom fan and I’m looking forward to what is next in this series!
Life changes for cowboy Travis Blake when he becomes guardian for his nephew Henry. Travis comes home to the ranch and finds that the ranch is in bad standing with back taxes. He needs to learn to work together with his neighbor Maggie, who is also owner of a landscaping/design business. This book is hard to put down. It’s a great enemies to lovers book with a lot of witty moments and an adorable 5 year old boy named Henry just tops it all off.
This was a really good book! Travis and Maggie have to learn to overcome their pasts in order to move on with their future. This book is about learning to trust, love and family. It was just right amount of angst to make it not so unbearable, it was funny (you have to love Bubba and Henry). I loved that the story line was relatable and I felt like I was part of the family watching everything unfold.
I can’t wait to read Claire’s story 🙂
This book is fantastic! It’s a play on Little Red Riding Hood. I don’t think I stopped smiling or smirking through the entire book. The chemistry between Travis and Maggie is incredible. Then there is Henry, Travis’s nephew! He pulls at your heart strings when you aren’t wanting to pull your own hair for Travis. If you want a book that is hot, funny, tender and has a great cast of side characters, this book is for you!
Travis Blake has always been the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, thanks to his dad’s doing, and of course his brother’s wild antics didn’t help matters either, but he took all that stigma that following him around as fuel, and tried to be the one Blake who wasn’t a screw-up. Which took him to the Army, where he has spent the last few years of his life, but now he is ready to start the next chapter, but before he can get started on it home calls, and he finds himself heading to a place he’d hoped to steer clear of. There he finds a young nephew to care for, the family ranch to repair and prepare for sale, and a sexy landscaper who loves to push his buttons… all the wrong ones of course!
Maggie has had a secret crush on Travis since they were in high school, but he was a few years older than her, and of course his eyes never landed in her direction, so she just tucked that little crush away and never thought about it again… that is until she learns he is back in town to settle his father’s affairs. Then she learns that while he is back in town that he is taking on some landscaping business to earn some money, which means the sexy cowboy is taking money right out of her pocket, and stealing potential clients right from under her nose which makes him her sworn enemy! That is until they unexpectedly run into one another at a Halloween party and share a few heated moments…
Big Bad Cowboy is a delightful western romance that is impressive on all fronts; a dramatic story line that keeps you engaged, well crafted characters you can’t help but form an attachment too, and loads of humor, passion and heart to keep you smiling and swooning throughout! Maggie and Travis’s story did not disappoint, the moment they wandered onto the page I found myself enamored with them, one minute they had me giggling, and the next they had me needing a fan! This first time read really delivered; the writing was impeccable, the characters (main and secondary) came with a tangible feel; it’s definitely one of the best literary discoveries that I have made in a while, I cannot wait to see what the author has in store for the next book! Highly recommend!
