Alexandria is a wonderful, impulsive lady who takes action! She might not always think things through, which gets her in trouble, but a mysterious gunslinger comes to her rescue. Together these two face lots of trouble and end up depending on each other to stay alive! I won’t spoil it with the details because they are so exciting and it’s a quick read because you won’t be able to put it down!! Love a brave heroine!!!
I’ve never read such great characters. Malcolm Kincaid is driven to find justice for his brother and has no time to escort a spoiled Eastern lady to Montana. But Alexandra Brighton turns out to be tough, savvy, and so easy to love. Even as he fights it, he finds himself caring about her–loving her. This story had so many twists and turns and a love story that simply made me ache.
A young lady is at the height of Boston society, which is most impressive because she was raised her first 15 years in the wilds of Montana. On the occasion of her engagement to one of Boston’s most sought-after eligible bachelors, she realizes she’s not sure who she truly is. Instantly deciding that she must return to Montana, she leaves without notice nor approval, to visit her father before she settles into her marriage. Traveling alone, she engages the service of a most unwilling bounty hunter to protect her and to escort her to Helena.
The book flows at an even pace, although a bit too slow for me at times. There are a few hold-your-breath moments, filled with action. The characters are genuine, with complicated pasts that unfold slowly throughout the story. I’m not quite sure how I feel about the steamy sexual scenes. I don’t generally mind them and am not offended, but in my opinion they don’t seem to fit into this book. This is the first book in a trilogy and I’m not certain I’ll read the others.
I loved the spark between the Hero and Heroine! A fun read.
I must confess I went into this blind and only picked up The Gunslinger’s Vow because of absolutely stunning cover by Gregg Gulbronson. The Gunslinger’s Vow is slow burn western historical romance concerning a young woman’s search for herself and independence and man’s vow of revenge.
The majority of the book is carried by just the two protagonists journeying to Helena, Montana which was reminiscent of one of my first historical romances, Texas Destiny by Lorraine Heath. It’s difficult to have only two character in scenes and have them carry the plot and keep it interesting, but Amy Sandas managed to do just that. This lead to a wonderful journey of having the readers see truly how the hero and heroine went from butting heads to true lust and then to love.
The hero is a bit of grouch with few words to say, but he never came off as an asshole to me. Rather he showed his good character through his actions. The heroine was sweet, a bit impulsive, and had some backbone. She was smart and resourceful and knew when not to push and not to push the hero’s buttons.
This was a delightful western historical romance that gave me the nostalgic feeling of reading older romance when I was a young teen. I think those who are tired of more ‘modern’ historical romances will enjoy this book and series as well as newer readers to historical romance who don’t want anything close to old school bodice rippers.
Alexandra Brighton has just accepted a marriage proposal from Peter Shaw, a member of one of the most prominent families in Boston. This proposal is everything her aunt has hoped for her since she came to live with her 5 years ago. But the instead of being overjoyed, she feels like she has made a horrible mistake and suddenly longs to go home to Montana. She askes her two dearest friends for help and sets out alone.
Malcolm Kincaid is a bounty hunter, but he has only one true goal in life – to hunt down and kill the man that murdered his younger brother. So when a fancy dressed woman enters the saloon in Wyoming asking for help – he has no problem saying no.
But fate isn’t done with these two, when Alex is robbed and abandoned in the wilderness, she happens upon Malcolm. He agrees to take her as far as the next town – period. She uses their time together to try and change his mind and eventually succeeds.
As they travel together, their mutual attraction builds and Alex knows that she cannot marry Peter and plans to send him a letter once she reaches her father’s home. When men hunting Malcolm attack, Alex saves him, but not before he is shot. She tends his wounds and nurses him back to health. He is shocked at how resourceful and competent she is and askes about her past. Slowly they learn each other’s secrets (well most of them) and Malcolm makes it clear that he has no place in his life for a wife until he avenges his brother. Finally their attraction can no longer be denied and Alex pushes when Malcolm tries to be honorable. They both acknowledge their feelings to themselves and know that their time together is ending.
When they finally reach her father’s home – Alex is shocked and hurt to learn how much her father has kept from her the last five years and Malcolm learns that he and Alex have more in common than he thought. On their last night together, he tells her he loves her, because if he doesn’t make it back from his quest, he wants her to know. Alex is fuming when she learns that Malcolm left and refuses to be left behind. But will she arrive in time??
This was an entertaining read, the book is well written and is chocked full of action, adventure, gun fights, sexual tension and lots and lots of secrets. I did feel like it dragged a bit in the middle and the ending felt a little rushed, but overall I enjoyed the book and would be happy to recommend!
I really enjoy branching out into new worlds with historicals and The Gunslinger’s Vow is a great read. I know there are lots of wild west stories but I rarely read them. I really liked that Ms. Sandas did not use the corny language of some western historicals. The story moved along well and the two main characters were really likeable. Yes, even Malcolm. He is adorable. It was fun to see how he was shocked to learn that Alexandra really could take care of herself. No prim and proper miss for her. Alexandra was bright and knew what she wanted and had no problem asking for it. Big smile when I finished the book.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Though western romance isn’t my favorite type of historical romance, I have many Amy Sandas books on my TBR pile, so I wanted to give this book a shot. It started out nicely, with Alexandra sneaking away from Boston to head back home to see her father in Montana. She needed to find a guide once the train portion of her journey ended. Malcolm McKaid, a bounty hunter on a mission, was recommended to her; however, he wanted to seek his prey and declined. So Alex found help elsewhere. Let’s just say that didn’t end well!
Malcolm catches up with her and decides to guide her to her father’s on the way to his bounty. This is where the story slowed down. There was a slow burning attraction between the two, perhaps a little too slow. I got to the point I just wanted them to just sleep together and get on with it! And Malcolm wasn’t particularly likeable during this time. Then big trouble hit, and Alex and Malcolm had to hole up in a tiny cabin.
Things started to pick up speed here. We learn that Alex is really a strong woman, and Malcolm’s not as gruff as he appears. When they reach Alex’s father, I couldn’t out the book down until it was finished. Two things happened that I did NOT see coming, and things really got exciting!
This ended up being quite a good story, and I’m really interested in reading the next book in the series and others by Ms. Sandas.
