She believes the secret to love is in the tropes of her favorite romance novels. He’s the best friend prepared to prove her wrong.
Then comes the bet.
If she can’t land a boyfriend for prom by recreating the ten popular tropes in her favorite romance author’s books, she has to go to the prom with her.
The glitch?
They’ve been close their entire lives. He’s the rock god and school legend, while … the rock god and school legend, while she’s the brainy sidekick who does all his dirty breakups. Thus, finding a guy who doesn’t think they’re already an item is going to be a lot harder than she thinks.
Will she land the book boyfriend of her dreams? Or will she be forced to go to prom with her best friend?
The truth is in the pages.

Let’s start with the obvious the title. I have a lot of book boyfriends and book exes too. So when I saw the title I knew I had to read this. I mean HELLO…I want to know who the book boyfriend is and why is he so great there is an entire book dedicated to him. Second the cover photo, completely, absolutely hands down one of my top 5 favorite book covers ever. I think it’s an adorable, appealing and can easily be any book enthusiast reading that book.
So let’s get to the nitty gritty….The summary of the book is pretty much spot on. It has the air of intrigue that drove me to want to read this book because it reminded me of the 90’s. Now in the 90’s we had some pretty epic classic teen chick-flick movies came out. Like 10 things I hate about you (nerdy hot chick with the hot guy who gets all the girls), Can’t hardly wait ( realizing what’s been there the whole time), Drive me crazy ( friends turn couple) and so many more. I could go on but I think you get it. I grew up with those movies, loved those movies, even to this day I’ll still watch them. So this book was a unique and new twist on a 90’s movie but in a book ( which I now appreciate so much more).
All the characters are easy to fall in love with, easy to like and easy to get annoyed with. (FYI ~ Cam would so be added to my list of book boyfriends but he still in high school, so yeah) I adore the close friendship between Macey and Cam. How they support each other and are protective of each other ( to a point) and how Cam has Macey handle his breakups.
So I said a lot of positive because there aren’t many negatives, except for that fact that while Macey implements a list based off of romance novels to find the perfect date, it’s a little concerning the thought factor behind it. Macey comes off as a bright, kind, loving and well-rounded girl so for her to be willing to execute some of the things on her list came off a little juvenile to say. Cam, can just sometimes come off more of the overbearing brother as opposed to a guy trying to figure out his feelings.
This is a quick read, I think it’s more geared towards teens preferably jr high & high school age and is one I wouldn’t mind letting my teenage daughters ( when the time comes) read. I can’t wait to buy this for a special teenager girl ( not my daughter) I know who is obsessed with finding a boyfriend. I know she’ll enjoy this book as much as I have. So be sure to add this to that Christmas list because this will be the perfect stocking stuffer.
This was a sweet, funny YA romance in the vein of Lily Anderson’s “The Only Thing Worse Than Me Is You” – intelligent teenagers, funny dialogue, and unexpected love. Enjoyable read.
