Once upon a time, in a land far, far away…well, Scotland…Rose lived tucked away from the world with her aunt. Orphaned as a baby and adopted by her aunt, she’s used to her eccentric ways—including her overprotectiveness. But Rose wants more from life. However, she never quite expected for Laird Hamish McTavish—complete with kilt—to change things. The brash, and admittedly braw, man is hardly like … hardly like the charming men Rose has been dreaming of.
Freshly returned from the battlefield with an unexpected inheritance, highlander Hamish is struggling enough to fit in at the sleepy lowland village. When he comes across a feisty young woman with wild hair and a brash tongue on his land, he doesn’t expect it to lead to more than a five-minute argument.
But he cannot help himself. His curiosity is piqued. Who is this young woman surrounded by three slightly-crazed elderly women seemingly intent on keeping her from the world? He must find out more.
Unfortunately, there are several people more than willing to get in the way of that aim. Rose’s aunt for one—not to mention his late-cousin’s mistress who is determined to replace one cousin with the other. Not only must Hamish deal with his duties and find a way to get close to Rose, he must also find a way to get rid of this abhorrent woman…before she does anything truly evil.

Rose lived tucked away from the world with her aunt in the lowlands of Scotland. Orphaned as a baby and adopted by her aunt, she’s used to her eccentric ways—including her overprotectiveness. Rose is used to wandering the local countryside & there she meets the new laird, Laird Hamish McTavish- complete with kilt. The ex soldier & highlander is hardly like the charming men Rose has been dreaming of.
A very sweet, clean story retelling the fairy tale. Rose & Hamish get off to a rocky start but this gradually changes especially when he saves her aunt from being robbed.
Only a short story so great to curl up with & while away a few hours
This was a fun, quick, romantic & entertaining read with similarities to Sleeping Beauty. Rose Merriweather, our heroine, has been adopted by her Aunt May & lives together with Aunt May’s housekeeper & cook in 1812 Dumfriesshire, Scotland. After waking up to the women chasing a stray dog out of the house, Rose goes in search of finding it. After tiring out, she lays in the grass & the next thing she knows, she is awakened by Hamish McTavish, the new, unexpected, Laird of Baleith. Hamish is out looking for his dog, who disappeared, when he ran across Rose sleeping in the grass – well as they say “how can anything so wrong be so right?”
Very entertaining read. Interesting and entertaining characters. Different characters make the story! Liked the story and story flow. Hard to put down. Would recommend.

This is a quick yet highly entertaining, sexy, fun and engaging romantic journey filled with interesting charters, witty dialog and a fun fairy tail twist… really enjoyed this afternoon relaxing read! Great reading.
It all started with a kiss. Well it seemed like a kiss but it was more like a lick and when Rose opened her eyes, she giggled to see it was a small dog. But everyone in the house was up in arms trying to get him out of the house! Rose had been adopted by her Aunt May and with the housekeeper and cook, it made up their household. She had not gotten to know anyone her own age hardly because there were none in the village.
She decided to go out and search for the dog and after a long walk, laid down on the heather and thought the dog might come to her! Falling asleep, she was suddenly awoken by a large man and demanded to know who he was! He informed her he was the new Laird. Oh yes a braw highlander!
Thus the journey begins. Following along the lines of Sleeping Beauty, this is an enchanting tale of a man finding a beautiful woman and being instantly smitten. But it is a long winding road to find out more about her and try to keep away the female villain who wants him for his own! Lovely
Book one in the Regency Fairy Twists series a well written story with a very good storyline. Laird Hamish McTavish and Miss Rose Merriweather’s story of suspense, drama, danger, attempted murder, a evil woman, and romance
A Little Long Getting There, But Wonderful Characterization
I am a huge fan of stories that are twists on common fairy tales. This one is very loosely based on Sleeping Beauty. I’ve read many books by this author, and I find her works to be variable in quality, though I always pick one up because when she does a story well, she does it *very*well. I think she did a good job with the characters in this particular book. The heroine is sheltered and naive, like a sleeping beauty should be. Her prince is a newly-minted Scottish laird who never thought he would become the leader of his clan. He is a Highlander, a soldier who fought at Waterloo, and he is very uncomfortable stepping into the shoes of a Lowland laird. I thought the author did an excellent job as well with the characterization of the protective females in the heroine’s life, her aunt and the servants. As the novella is so short, I thought it took a little too long to explain her backstory and really get to the heart of the romance. Other than that, I found this to be a very enjoyable re-visioning of a classic fairy tale.
I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
Fairy tales, though wonderful, is hard to forget that it is nothing but a tale. Set in Scotland however, Samantha Holt not only make the story realistic, she had it matter of fact.

Hamish was a war torn, kilt wearing highlander that had inherited a castle because his uncle had died. He also inherited his uncles mistress. The innocent Rose had been hidden away from everyone by her overprotective aunt. One day Hamish was out looking for his dog and he happened upon Rose as she slept in a field. Hamish knew Rose was for him and started his courtship for her. But could they get their HEA with the evil Mistress Marianne around? Fast and fun

This is a sweet, fairy tale retelling set in Scotland. Rose is an orphan who was raised by her overprotective aunt and Hamish has returned from the battlefield and received an unexpected inheritance. This author has written a beautiful story with great characters and an entertaining dog.
This story is a little different from most of this type of romance novels. You know there is some kind of secret but who knows what is is? Rose meets Hamish as he finds her sleeping on his land and they seem to get off on a rocky start. This is a fairly short book good for an evening read.

Rose was orphaned as an infant and was raised by her aunt. Rose considers her aunt eccentric and content to live her life as a recluse since she never accepts invitations from any of the people in the village and warns Rose away from being overly friendly. Rose is mostly content with her life as she is allowed to roam the countryside but, she wants more out of life.
Hamish McTavish never expected to inherit his cousin’s estate or his title, that’s why he became a soldier. He doesn’t know the first thing about managing an estate but is determined to succeed. When he comes across Rose asleep on his property, his interest is piqued. Who is this lass? While Hamish is intrigued by Rose, he knows he must deal with his new title and all the responsibilities that come with it. And he must get his cousin’s former mistress out of his home.
But Rose’s aunt is overprotective and doesn’t want Rose around Hamish. Rose wants to know more about their new neighbor. Will an unfortunate happening allow the two to learn to know each other better?
This is a retelling to the classic Sleeping Beauty. Very charming and a quick read.

This is a historical romance with a loose adaptation of elements of the Sleeping Beauty plot as a familiar undertone to the story. It’s clean, sweet and overall quite good and I did enjoy reading it. Two things though: 1) The dog stole the show and that’s probably not ideal in a romance and 2) It was a bit repetitive in places, which likely wouldn’t have been a problem in a full-length novel but was noticeable in a novella.
I did like the characters and the story and if you like a simple, uncomplicated historical romance this is well worth picking up on KU. I am invested enough to check out the other books in the series, which I suspect are all standalone.
As of writing is available on Kindle Unlimited, which is how I read it.
First I must point out that the cover art on this series is beautiful especially the book that follows this one. A sweet quick read. Hamish is settling into his new role as Laird. Rose is a beautiful young lady who he finds trespassing on his property. The two are attracted to each other. Evil and secrets are lurking and trying to keep them apart. This is a fairytale romance that is filled with whimsy and happiness.
Starring Miss Rose Merriweather and Hamish McTavish, Laird of Baleith… and Rupert the dog.
This was a sweet and clean re-telling of Sleeping Beauty. Rose is a maiden who lives with her Aunt and 2 other ladies in the Woods. They, of course have a secret on who she really is and the reason why they’ve keep her isolated. Hamish is a dashing hero who just recently become Laird after his cousin’s passing. Rose and Hamish both bump into each other in the woods. From there, they both share an attraction. He does his best to come up with excuses to see her. An evil ex-mistress (the former Laird’s) steps in their path to destroy this budding romance. But love wins out in the end. This was a good easy and quick read and I enjoyed it.

3 stars: Characters and storyline were good. Some parts kept my attention. But will not be re-reading this story.
