GREAT START TO A NEW SERIES!!!
Title: Claws and Effect
Series: Small Town Shifters
Author: Lola Kidd
Designation: Book One of Series, Standalone, Novella, No Cliffhanger, HEA #paranormalromance
Reading Platform: Kindle Edition
My Rating: Three Hopeful Stars***
I’ve been a diehard Lola Kidd for years and always enjoy her work, but this book was probably my least favorite of all her stories. Don’t get me wrong, I loved the premise, title, and cover but not the execution. The narrative was written with dual his and her third-person perspectives, which is one of my favorite styles for paranormal romance, but the flow of the story seemed off. The dialogue felt a little forced and choppy. Also, I couldn’t seem to connect with either of the protagonists and didn’t feel any chemistry between them until the last few chapters. I didn’t particularly like either of the protagonists, at least not at first. Rhett Lundthall is a mythical shifter and the Head Keeper for the Lake Magnolia community. He’s kinda like the shifter sheriff and the person responsible for handling shifter/human relations in his community. Joseline Herza is a professional organizer who specializes in helping to clear clutter people’s lives and create order, either for businesses or individuals. Rhett and Joseline did eventually grow on me, but I still didn’t feel any explosive chemistry between them. Throughout 95% of the book, Rhett was a grumpy, unfriendly, introverted, hard-to-get-along-with fuddy-duddy and not romantic at all. He was just a ‘Debbie Downer’ who ran hot and cold all the time! lol… And Joseline – I don’t even know what to say about her. She was all over the place with her emotions and came off as somewhat of a fickle, wishy-washy, promiscuous airhead. I felt there was so much missing from this story, and I’m not just talking about the mysterious ailment afflicting some of the shifters, causing them to attack humans. I’m talking about character development and personal details. For instance, did either Rhett or Joseline have family and where were they? Why was Joseline immune to shifter magic? The primary conflict appeared to be a personal dilemma preventing a relationship between the two protagonists but was not well defined. We do discover that Rhett is a much older mythical shifter and had not had a relationship for a hundred years, but if he was so old, how could he even consider mating a regular human? Is there something that would increase Joseline’s lifespan thereby allowing her to live longer after she matted Rhett. I’ve read how mating bites can extend the life of humans but it’s never talked about in this story. If I were in Joseline’s place and knew my sweetie was hundreds of years old, I’d be curious about this little detail. Apparently, each book will feature a different couple, but there appears to be an underlying interconnected plot thread which will be resolved as the series progresses. Some of my questions may be answered in a future book and with that thought in mind, the jury’s still out on subsequent releases in the series.
So, did I like this book? I waited two weeks before writing this review, simply because I was so troubled by what to say. As I said earlier, I’ve been a Lola Kidd fan for years and that won’t change because of how I feel about one story. I did like it, but I didn’t love it. Was there anything I didn’t like? There were some things I felt were missing and several that could have been written differently, but I’m not a professional reviewer nor a writer, so who am I to judge? There were quite a few typos and errors which could have been eliminated by a simple proofread, but none serious enough to distract me from the story. Would I recommend it? Again, I love Kidd’s work and have for years. I’d say, if you enjoy imaginative paranormal romance with unique shifters and creative storylines, give this one a whirl, especially since it’s the first book of a new series and sets up the world and premise. This review is nothing more than my humble opinion, so please don’t shoot the messenger. I’m simply trying to be honest. Will I read this author again? You bet! Just as soon as she releases her next book! And finally, was I entertained? Absolutely!
