If anyone asks, I knew better than to flash my boobs for Mardi Gras beads.I still don’t know why I did it.Maybe it was the dare from my two best friends. Maybe it was the guys on the balcony saying they’d throw Fireball shots with the beads.Or maybe it was the quiet guy in the corner of that same balcony with piercing gray eyes, wavy dark hair, and a smile so tempting I wanted to climb up there … wanted to climb up there and lick it off his face.
Maybe it was because I never thought I’d see them again.
Not that it matters. Not today.
Because the hotel I manage was finally bought—and the guy who walks in and introduces himself as my new boss is Mr. Tall, Dark, and Silent.
There are many upsides to being single.
Your new boss knowing what your boobs look like?
Not one of them.
(THE UPSIDE TO BEING SINGLE is a standalone, romantic comedy from the author who brought you MISS FIX-IT and BEING BROOKE.)

“…my name is Jake, not Mr. Creed.”
“I don’t care.”
“I do. Call me it again, and I have half a mind to throw you over my knee.”
Absolutely HILARIOUS! Both SEXY and insanely RIDICULOUS, this is one CRAZY TRAIN that I never wanted to get off of! Emma Hart is and WILL ALWAYS BE my spirit animal!
What is there left to say, really? I mean, it’s an Emma Hart Romantic Comedy! No one does Rom-Com quite like the queen! THE UPSIDE TO BEING SINGLE is Mellie and Jake’s story. It’s the first of three that follow Mellie, Peyton, and Chloe. So while this is a standalone there will be over-arching storylines. And hey, whatever gives me more of these three crazy women, I’m ALL FREAKING IN!
This INCREDIBLY funny romance is all about the awkward meet-cutes, the comedic and snort-inducing banter, the overindulgence of donuts, insane friendship goals, and enough sexual tension to set your reading device aflame! Mellie and Jake are so freaking cute, I can’t stand it. The patience that Jake holds is ridiculous. It just showed how much these two crazy characters were meant to be. Don’t even get me started on the three musketeers i.e. Mellie, Peyton, and Chloe. When they get together, they are on a whole other level. And the wonderful backdrop that is New Orleans was the perfect setting for this book and the books to follow.
This is mostly in Mellie’s POV, but we do get little treats that are Jake’s POV mixed in, which I wanted MORE of! With each chapter brought a hilarious heading telling us what IS the upside to being single and I thought that was an amazing touch on an already fantastic romance read. I’m not surprised in the least that I absolutely LOVED and ADORED this book, these characters, and this storyline. Emma Hart is my absolute GO TO in this genre and of course, she never disappoints. I can’t wait for Peyton and Chloe’s stories. I’m already giggling like crazy, thinking of what the future holds for these characters!
“You look pretty today.”
“I’m wearing yoga pants, a shirt with a sauce stain on it, and I think my socks have holes in them. Try again, Romeo.”
And just a warning! Reading THE UPSIDE TO BEING SINGLE will cause an excessive urge to run out and buy donuts. It may cause heavy texting between your best girlfriends. It will cause a need to purchase a plane ticket to New Orleans. It will definitely give you the urge to head out during Mardi Gras and flash a random cutie, hoping to find a Jake of your very own!
No one wants to flash their boobs at their boss. No one. Whether they know they are doing it or not, no one wants this moment.
Jake and Mellie (Melissa) are fun. And, they are attracted to one another. And, he is her boss. Who has seen her boobs. There’s no way this is going to go well…yet it does. Because, Jake likes what he saw, and he likes Mellie. Mellie also likes Jake, when she is not thinking absolutely hilarious things about why she can’t date him and why it is better to be single.
Mellie’s inner dialog is hilarious. You laugh at her, and with her, as she is going through life, tripping over everything and trying not to react to Jake or be attracted to him, because he is her boss (and he has seen her boobs, which is not something she can just get over).
Jake is appealing. I love how, even though he is her boss, he respects Mellie and the job she has done as the manager of the hotel he just bought. I think, for me at least, for an office romance to work I have to believe that the characters respect one another and that while they might have met because they work together, they would have been together even if they hadn’t met at work.
I recommend this title.
Mellie Rogers is happily single. And even if she wasn’t, the last person she would want to date would be her new boss… who may or may not have seen her partially naked…
Jake Creed had quite the welcome to living in New Orleans. And now the object of his fantasies turns out to be his newest employee… no conflict to see here, folks.

This was a fun read! Featuring the slowest of slow burns, and a LOT of sexual tension.
Mellie is the manager at a local New Orleans hotel. She spends her days putting out fires and basically running the entire business. She is also sweet, sassy and extremely klutzy… especially around her new boss.
Jake moved to New Orleans with the sole purpose to renovate the hotel that he recently purchased. Meeting Mellie was unexpected, and something he is extremely interested in pursuing… whether he’s her boss or not.
This book is filled with an entertaining back and forth between Mellie and Jake and their off the charts sexual tension. While their working situation completely complicates things, there’s no denying how much they want each other.
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
4.5
The Upside to Being Single is Emma Hart’s newest laugh out loud romantic comedy. Emma never disappoints with her quick wit and hilarious characters. Mellie flashes some guy for beads. She never does that! But, oh well. It’s over, done and she’ll never see them again. Until she does. At work. As her new boss. Oh heck! Now she has to work for someone who has seem more of her than any coworker every should. Add to that, he’s incredibly sexy, funny as h and can’t seem to take no for an answer. But as long as he keeps bringing her donuts, the answer is always yes. Jake is new to town, doesn’t know much about New Orleans and just wants to make his new investment the best it can be. When he ends up being the boss to the crazy lady who flashed him, he can’t help but this it’s fate. She’s a hot mess. But she’s adorable and sexy and she can cook. Oh yeah, he can work with her. He also wants to do more than work. But can he pursue someone who works for him? Yes, yes he can, because he can’t stop thinking about her. Wanting her and feeding her. He’s not going to take no for an answer. Jake and Mellie were freaking hilarious! I was embarrassed on her behalf, but Jake was never laughing at her. He loves her quirks and clumsiness. Together, they can practice cooking, eat donuts, run a hotel and make out. What can go wrong?
With hilarious banter, donut filled apologies, and friendship goals that are out of this world, you’ll be sure to laugh out loud while falling in love. Another hit by the Queen of Rom-Com!
I can never get enough of the romantic comedies that Emma Hart writes. They are hilarious and have too many embarrassingly relatable moments to mention. Whenever I finish reading one of her books, I have a smile on my face that lasts for weeks.
After meeting in an extremely awkward and embarrassingly way, Mellie and Jake have to try to maneuver around it as boss and employee. I laughed out loud more times than I could count while reading this story. I couldn’t get enough.
This story is told mainly through Mellie’s POV, it was great to get a few chapters sprinkled in with Jake’s POV. Mellie is a sassy, spunky, and stubborn girl who has witty comebacks and recovers from her clumsiness better than anyone I know in real life. Jake is the typical alpha hot male lead who is blunt and calm. His sweet moments are full of charm and make him truly swoon worthy!
One of the things I love the most about Emma’s books are her secondary characters. The other two parts of the trio of friends in this story is no exception. Mellie, Peyton, and Chloe are what true best friends are made of. I can’t wait to read what they all continue to get up to when we get Peyton and Chloe’s stories.
If you want a story that will make you laugh your butt off and want buy your local donut shop’s entire supply, don’t hesitate! Go get yourself a copy of this book right now!
This is my first book from Emma Hart and the minute I saw boobs and boss in the same sentence, I knew this would be just the thing I needed!
Jake is Mellie’s new boss and yes, he’s already seen her boobs. They are attracted to each other almost immediately, yet Mellie knows dating your boss could potentially be a disaster. Jake, well, he knows it too but he just doesn’t care. He wants Mellie.
The Upside of Being Single is hilarious. You will laugh with Mellie and Jake, hell, you will definitely laugh at Mellie, with all of the things that only seem to happen when she’s around Jake. The banter between Jake and Mellie was fun and sarcasm at its best. Mellie and her friends = comedy gold. I loved everything about the three of them. They were hilarious and I could totally relate with them all!
Jake is like…WHOA. Even though he is Mellie’s boss, he respects what Mellie has done as manager of the hotel, but yet he is not giving up on the sparks that are most definitely flying between the two of them. The way Jake wooed her with doing something small almost every single day for her, that’s romance!
The Upside to Being Single is an absolute gem. I loved every single moment of this book and want to go back and read it again!
Honestly, I can’t even handle the hilarity that is Emma Hart! “The Upside of Being Single” is a slow, build up to a massive explosion of lust and heat. It was so hot that I felt my fingertips being singed from holding my kindle while reading this deliriously, funny book! Emma Hart is all about the awkward and uncomfortable in “The Upside of Being Single.” I’m thrilled that while this is a standalone novel, we will get over-lapping stories. We started with Mellie and we’ll follow with Peyton and Chloe. They are a serious hoot and I can’t wait to get to know the two other ladies in the mind of Emma Hart!
So in this uber-fantastic story, we have Mellie and Jack. While this is a dual POV book, we get most of Mellie’s thoughts and we get these delightful snippets from Jack. I did want a bit more of his head. He had the patience of a saint and Mellie held all the hilarity and craziness of a standup comic. I mean, what better way to introduce yourself to your new boss than to flash him your boobs? Of course, after that, they had a hard time fighting their attraction, but they did, for what seemed like FOREVER. Finally, I was yelling at them to hit the sheets before I imploded with sexual tension! But dating your boss could be a HUMONGOUS disaster just waiting to happen and with Mellie included, you just know it’ll be hilarious!
I can NOT recommend this book more. Emma Hart’s humor knows no bounds. She’s going to have you hooting with laughter! She’s the total queen of RomComs! I don’t know where she thinks up half this stuff but I hope she never runs out of material. Not only is her storyline complete hilarity-perfection but the way she writes is pure poetic. It’s this crispness that leads to a sleepless night up reading until you reach the end.
I received an ARC of this book with the hope that I will leave an Unbiased Opinion. I was not required to leave a review, positive or otherwise, and my opinions are just that… my opinions.
The Upside to Being Single is yet another hilarious book written by Emma Hart. This book is done through Mellie’s point of view and is set in New Orleans and starts at Mardi Gras and that just sets the stage. Mellie is hilarious and the banter between her and Jake and the sexual tension between the two of them is just classic. I found myself laughing out loud in parts and I just loved the story setting and how the author wove this tale.
The Upside to Being Single by Emma Hart is the first of three books surrounding a trio of best friends, Mellie, Peyton and Chloe. A hilarious romance with a slow burn that will drive you wild. Told mostly from Mellie’s POV we do get a couple of chapters from Jake’s perspective as well.
Mellie is a mess – to quote her directly “an organized hot-mess” and when the hotel where she has been general manager for the past few years comes under new ownership she is waiting for the arrival of the new boss with trepidation. When her friends drag her out, ply her with cocktails and then dare her to flash the Mardi Gras crowd, shocked that she has never done it before, she locks eyes with a gorgeous man on a balcony and goes for it – sans bra. When said hottie turns out to be the new owner she was waiting to meet – well, it gets really awkward at the hotel.
Jake knows what he wants and regardless of the fact that she is his employee, he wants Mellie. He is calm and in control but not an overbearing male character. He is compassionate and consistent and just persists in gently breaking past her barriers.
Well-written with a slow build throughout the entire story to the romantic climax (*wink*) and leading us into the setting for the next story. Loved it! Enjoy!
4.5 Bossy stars for this hilarious read.
I’ve read a few books by Emma Hart now and I can safely say, she writes some hilariously stuff. The genuine, hold your belly until the tears come kind of laughs is what her books are made of, and The Upside To Being Single was no different.
Mellie is the manager of a small boutique hotel in New Orleans, and one night she goes out with her friends and gets drunk. It’s Mardi Gras after all, who wouldn’t be drunk then. On a dare from her two besties, Mellie flashes a hot guy. Mr Tall, Dark and Silent as she nicknamed him gets to sees all of her boobs, because guess what? Mellie is not wearing a bra.
But, it’ll be fine, she’ll never see him again her friends assure her. Right?
Wrong!
The man who ogled her boobs? He’s not just any man. He’s…
‘Mr TDS, cause Tall, Dark and Silent is too much of a mouthful, even in my head.’
And… he’s her new boss, Jake Creed.
The attraction Jake and Mellie share is immediate and hard to resist, but they must, or so they keep telling themselves as they accidentally touch, or kiss. But, when it’s this good, it too hard to fight for long, or at all really.
The way to Mellie’s heart is donuts, she’s crazy about them and Jake wantonly feeds that addiction and uses it to get his way. Over and over.
I loved their snarky back and forth banter, Mellie’s klutzy clumsiness and Jake tough guy image. These two were a whirlwind of laugh out loud moments but they had a slow burn going on in the romance department throughout the story.
If you’re looking for a light-hearted, angst-free story then look no further because you have it all here. Kudos to Emma for another brilliant book.
I absolutely adore Emma Hart and her novels as they always have a sassy heroine and a hot alpha male. There is something about the spirited back and forth banter and the hot chemistry between her protagonists that I just love because it always has me devouring her books in one sitting. That is exactly what we received in The Upside to Being Single with Jake and Mellie. To just call this book an office romance would be a crime as it is so much more!! Jake and Mellie were fantastic!
When Mellie and her two girlfriends have one too many drinks during a night out during Mardi Gras, a dare gets thrown and then the shenanigans begin. But what happens when two days later the mysterious man who saw her flash her goods turns out to be her sexy new boss! What follows is a fast paced story full of sassy wit, laughs and hearts.
I loved this story as it was another example of an amazing “feel good” romance from this author. I can’t wait for her next one! 4 stars! ~Ratula
Carefree and careless collide to create awkward in The Upside to Being Single. Ms. Hart is the type of author that makes me forget myself. One glimpse of her brand of funny and I’m blind to everything else. Falling in love is about taking a risk and letting it all hang out. The Upside to Being Single took the glow of youth, from sass to crass and made it a blast.
