Della has learned to rely on herself, and only herself. She’s grown comfortable with her solitude and can’t wait to turn eighteen to advance out of the foster system that’s held her captive her whole life. What she doesn’t expect is a thin folder in the hands of her latest social worker to change her life. Inside is the name of her mother, the identity of her biological family and more questions … questions than answers.
Della travels across country to claim the only pieces of her mother that still exist — a house and safe deposit box. What’s inside the safe deposit box pulls Della into a whirlpool of unanswered questions and the house brings with it a family she has a hard time believing when they say they never knew she existed. With every day she spends in the first place she has ever called home, Della is faced with truths she can’t avoid and the undeniable sense that there is more to her mother’s story than they will tell.
As Della struggles to adapt to her new life, she is pulled into an unimaginable world — one on the brink of war — and it takes everything Della has not to drown in a destiny she didn’t choose. Can she move past her anger and pain to save the people she’s come to love, or will her enemies strike before Della has the chance to become the only weapon capable of destroying them?

Characters had interesting attributes that I haven’t seen before. I liked that. Family interactions that were different. It was a different perspective than the usual magical book.
So good I bought the second one. Really enjoyed.
One of the nicest books I’ve read in a long time.
An interesting concept. A good YA read, and I’m sure the series will be very popular
Enjoyed the whole series. Imaginative exciting! Great great
Loved it! On the second one already
Fast read! Had to read the whole trilogy to see what happened next. Read them all in 8 days.
Overall rating: 4.8
I am really glad I have been so fortunate to read yet another spellbinding original! The MC is an orphan and this storyline led me willingly down the path to uncovering her mysterious heritage, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The unique abilities created by this author truly have me itching to move on to book 2. There …
Written for young, young adults. Certain literary tricks and resolutions were too obvious, but was fun to read.
interesting new concept. enjoyed it.
Enjoyed the story.
The premise was a good one and the pacing decent. But there were some major plot holes and the details for why, what and who were very thin — too thin for a supernatural piece of work. The many “clues” given were not needed. You can easily determine what’s what early on and — sadly and frustratingly so — way before Della does (protagonist). It …
This is the first book in a trilogy. Each of the 3 novels are well written and the story is believable! In this first book, Della is a foster child in California. It is her birthday and she is 18. She has a plan , but it falls through when her social worker brings her papers from her mom who died at her birth. She also has news of Della’s …
I liked it even though it was formulaic by the end. A bit too predictable to keep me interested.
I call this one 4 1/2 Stars. I got this first book free and liked the story enough that I’m buying the second story, which I only do for those I’m really intrigued by. (NOTE: this does end rather abruptly so if you truly hate continued books be warned!)
I know this has some similar characteristics as other stories but I feel this one has a unique …
I didn’t see the entire fantasy take on this. The plot is really clever and I adore how the author made the world she designed seem so natural. Della spent her life as a ward of the state. She’d never even met her parents so on her 18th birthday its a shock to know she has family and a house waiting for her. At first she and family don’t mesh but …
Love this book highly recommend for people who enjoy reading and love entertaining books
Too unrealistic and simple plot
Started out ok, then got too weird..
