Taking A Chance on Love
Val Hodgins has recently divorced and feels he’s been burned by women to many times to even think of starting a new relationship. Per his aunt’s request, he has temporarily left his Vancouver architectural practice to watch over her brownstone, tenants, and her mischievous dachshund, Cupid.
After Sierra Johnson’s ex-boyfriend convinced her to consolidate their funds, he disappeared with all of her savings. Now, she fears her dream of starting her own catering company has turned into a pipe dream. Sierra is working a new catering job under a boss-from-hell. To stretch her meager funds, she takes a position as caretaker for an old townhouse in exchange for lower rent. After the experience with her ex-boyfriend, Sierra vows to never trust a man again.
Due to Val startling Sierra in the kitchen and Cupid’s antics, their first meeting does not go well. She ends up tipping over a roasting pan with his dinner inside and burning her leg. Sierra has no idea the owner of the townhouse is Val’s aunt and assumes he’s just another tenant. And Val isn’t aware that Sierra is the caretaker.
Each time Val encounters Sierra, she drops something and figures he views her as a klutz. Despite their awkwardness, they both find themselves strangely attracted to each other.
Things become more complicated when Sierra realizes that her boss-from-hell is Val’s sister. Even though Val is drawn to Sierra, he doesn’t want to get involved with the feisty, red-head. Due to his failed marriage, he thinks he’s not a “good relationship bet right now.” Will Val and Sierra let their hearts lead the way and take another chance at love?
This is a well-crafted, sweet romance novella with smart dialogue. Jacquie Biggar has created believable, lovable main characters that have both been stung by prior lovers. Cupid added a nice humorous touch to this enjoyable romantic read. Highly recommended!
