The LOVE IS MESSY series consists of two duets. The reading order is:Love is Messy: Luke & Lexi-Hot Mess (1) -Twice Burned (2)Love is Messy: Cole & Ana-Bad Things (3) -Battle Scars (4) I’ve been burned before.Once by love, twice by fire. And I don’t know which hurt worse. For years, I’ve been playing with fire. Both in the sheets and in the streets. But after a life changing accident, … the sheets and in the streets. But after a life changing accident, something had to give. Moving from Chicago to New York to live with my estranged brother is less than ideal, but it’s only temporary. To make it through the next year without killing each other, I need to stick to a few simple rules: no dating, no drama, no getting in each other’s business. Easy enough, right?
Then I met her, and the rules went out the window.
Problem is, he met her first.
TWICE BURNED is the highly anticipated finale to HOT MESS, book one in the Love is Messy Duet

Twice Burned is the second book in this series. It picks right where Hot Mess, the first book, left off. Hot Mess ends on a cliffhanger so I suggest having this one downloaded before you finish Hot Mess. I jumped into Twice Burned as soon as I turned the last page of Hot Mess.
I flew through the first several chapters, needing to know what the heck was going on with Luke and his return to Chicago. After getting past those first few chapters and getting some answers I began to get annoyed with Luke’s pattern of running. Luke gets a two-word text message from Chicago and off he goes. He’s not really running, but it sure does look like it to Lexi. Cole promotes her insecurities and doubts in a selfish game or revenge.
Lexi is still suffering confidence issues from her first marriage and is always waiting for the other shoe to drop in her relationship with Luke. She knows she isn’t good enough for him. Of course, she’s the only one who thinks that. The issues that were in the first book intensify in Twice Burned. So does the hatred Cole feels for Luke. Lexi is caught in the middle of it all and Cole knows exactly how to play her.
Twice Burned got a little annoying for me when it seemed like nothing was really moving along or being resolved. But, overall, I enjoyed the book. I just didn’t enjoy it as much as Hot Mess.
The duet of Hot Mess and Twice Burned were the first two books I’ve ever read by Emily Goodwin, and I was so impressed by her storytelling! I loved Luke and Lexi separately, and I loved them even more as a couple. Although the duet could’ve used some editing, that didn’t take away from the story, and I can’t wait to read more books by this author. I would definitely recommend this book.
Total disappointing. The only good thing is Cole. Really! Luke us useless , he couldn’t even answer the phone when his child was coming….really…… Cole is the “bad guy” when he is the only good part of the book. I cannot recommend this bookAlso the “good guy” is the bad guy, and Cole who has been wonderfull with Lexie so far is now the bad guy WTF. She is SOOOOO Stupid really…….everyone make her cry….you have 2 daughters: women up!
Great story about a book editor. Proofreading would have made the book better….
I enjoyed Twice Burned. I’d say that the first book in this duet was Lexi’s and this one is Luke’s. We finally get to find out why Luke left Chicago and why Cole hates Luke so much. Luke’s story made me cry a little. I really felt for him and what he had been through. Luke and Lexi are two very beautiful broken souls that found each other when they weren’t looking. Their journey wasn’t easy. It was messy, like life often is. They had to find their way through the drama, misunderstandings and people that tried to keep them apart. Finally coming through it all together and proving that love is worth fighting for.
I’m very glad they got their happy ending.
I’d say that the one thing that kept me from giving this book a higher rating was the editing. If that was to be fixed I’d happily give the book a higher rating.
I look forward to to reading Cole’s book.
This is book 2 in this duet and hot mess must be read first.
This book brings a head to the brothers fight and we see so many questions answered.
This author has done a great job with these characters.
“Beither or not, no one hurts you. Not when I’m around”
I highly recommend this duet
Whew! This is a crazy roller coaster of drama. Luke has disappeared which causes Lexi to question everything. Luke has returned to Chicago, he needs to face what happened to him and his best friend in the accident. He struggles with where his heart and loyalties lie. When he figures out what he really wants, will Lexi be there to welcome him? There are so many forces pushing against Luke and Lexi, the biggest one being their own personal doubts and demons. I loved the journey of working through the issues life throws at you to find what you truly want to be happy then fighting for it. This is a beautiful example of how hard life is but when you persevere, how sweet the reward. I voluntarily read an ARC of this book and this is my honest review.
I loved Luke’s continued dedication to his family and friends in Twice Burned. I gave the book three stars because Cole was a bigger a**whole than the ex-husband. I will not be reading Cole’s story.
