Detective Grace McKenna has a secret. She’s been blessed .. or cursed… with a gift. She can look at a person’s eyes and if they’ve done anything nefarious, she will see visions of the victim .. and the culprit. Makes it a little difficult with her job. How does she explain that so-and-so killed someone .. when no one knows the victim is even missing?
That’s what Grace is dealing with today. A teenage girl hasn’t been in touch with her family in two days. Luckily, she’s only been staying with a friend and is soon home safe and sound. But in speaking to the girl and wrapping up her case, she sees something in the girl’s eyes that lead her to making tough decisions to solve a case on her own.
This is an entertaining read with appealing, solidly written characters. There’s plenty of action, especially as McKenna crosses a few lines that she shouldn’t have. There’s a bit of romance as McKenna and another cop start a friendship that may become more. Telling him of her secret may stop whatever is brewing right in her tracks. The plot is well-written and I look forward to following this series.
Many thanks to the author / Independent Book Publishers Association (IBPA / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime mystery with paranormal overtones. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
I loved it. Thought to have been an odd duck at an early age her mom took her to therapists and whoever else might give her insight to her daughter. Years later, as a police officer, she has taken her ‘Gift’ of seeing crimes a person has committed and used it. She’s kept herself away from close relationships and sworn off men, she’d only scare them away. Great story of how she learned to process and handle the gift she has been given. Love it being incorporated into her job and life but not becoming ‘that crazy lady’. Well written with a awesome read with twist and turns that have you guessing wrong. The way this is written keeps you riveted to the story until the final page. A missing teen report was never so complicated. I haven’t read this author before but I do love her style and the way she twist the story up while keeping it easy.
What a Gift
Don’t know if I would like a ‘gift’ like this or not, but when you’re born with it, what can you really do? This story had some meat, sometimes it dragged, some you were at the edge of your seat, and then the ending? Ugh! Left me wanting to know so much more.
Overall, I did enjoy it. On to the next! #HappyReading

Kate Anslinger is one indy author who stands side by side with the best of the best. In “The Gift”, she weaves a compelling story with echoes of Stephen King’s “Carrie”. Grace McKenna is an alluring protagonist, and not just for The Gift that gives her an edge as a police officer. Kate paints her characters in full color, something that’s hard to do when the plot speeds along at a breakneck pace. Grace’s story is well told, hard to put down once you pick it up and leaves you hungry for the next book in the series.
A terrific story with a perfect mix of some supernatural and suspense. This story was a bit out of the norm for me but I am so glad I gave it a shot. Between the terrific writing and unique characters I did not want to put this down. To write a character with Grace’s abilities and have her mesh with the story and other characters must be tough and this author did it beautifully. A story I’d recommend to anyone looking for something different and well written. One you will not want to put down.l
