The fourth book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Field Party series–a southern soap opera with football, cute boys, and pick-up trucks–from USA TODAY bestselling author Abbi Glines. Tallulah Liddell had been defined by her appearance for as long as she could remember. Overweight and insecure, she preferred to fly under the radar, draw as little attention to herself so no one can hurt her. … herself so no one can hurt her. The only boy who did seem to ever notice her was her longtime crush, Nash Lee. But when he laughs at a joke aimed at Tallulah the summer before their senior year, Tallulah’s love dissipates, and she becomes determined to lose weight, to no longer be an object of her classmates’–and especially Nash’s–ridicule.
Nash Lee has it all–he’s the star running back of Lawton’s football team, being scouted by division one colleges, and on track to have a carefree senior year. But when an accident leaves him with a permanent limp, all of Nash’s present and future plans are destroyed, leaving him bitter, angry, and unrecognizable from the person he used to be.
Facing a new school year with her new body, Tallulah is out to seek revenge on Nash’s cruelty. All does not go according to plan, though, and Tallulah and Nash unexpectedly find themselves falling for each other. But with all the pain resting in each of their hearts, can their love survive?

Loving this YA series by Abbi Glines. These first 4 books have tackled some heavy topics and make you fall in love with all these high school friends trying to navigate their way through life. This particular storyline was heavy but important – covering everything from bullying and the impact that has on people, self-esteem related to body image, inappropriate relationships, and a few others that are too many to list out. It’s packed full of messages and learnings. The writing is fantastic and the characters are so well written and engaging from the first to the last page.
This is going to be a hard book to top. Definitely a great addition to your book collection.
Happy Reading…enjoy!
I especially like this story because it touches on a very real subject, bullying and a real but taboo subject, teacher-student “relationship”. Young people can be extremely cruel and this story shows the reality of that. I think I’ve liked this whole series because even though it has a happy ending, there is something dark and seedy in the rainbow.
Ahhh Nash and Tallulah!! There was so much happening in this one but it never felt overwhelming or all over the place. Tallulah’s struggling to find her place among her peers after loosing weight and no longer being the butt of their jokes. Nash is struggling to find himself after his injury has side lined him for good. These two work so good together that my only complaint is that I wanted more. Maybe a teeny tiny epilogue. Hoping when this series is over we get a glimpse into all thr couples futures.
This is book #4, in The Field Party series. This book can be read as a standalone novel. For reader understanding, and to avoid spoiler, I recommend reading this series in order.
Tallulah is one fat joke away from losing it. When she hears the love of her life laughing with someone about her looks, it is really the final straw. She makes some well timed changes and sets up a plan.
Nash had always been protective of Tallulah. He made no secret of their friendship. Now, when the “NEW” Tallulah comes to school and ignores him, it is like a knife to the chest. On top of everything else that is going on……..
This book was the best yet in the series. I love the real feelings and simple truths. These characters were already on their way to being in love and the year of pain just simply sealed the deal. I love that we still have access to our other fave characters too.
I admittedly don’t read much in YA world these days. Maybe some YA with NA crossover or what I call Steamy YA but me wanting a straight up young adult contemporary romance is not a thing that happens often. But, I always come back to this series. I fell in love with Abbi’s Sea Breeze series and was so sad when it was over. I also enjoy her Rosemary Beach series but I haven’t completed it yet. I didn’t care for one of her newer series but that isn’t this. I enjoy these books for what they are. Fluffy, young adult contemporary books that tug on my heartstrings. Abbi is very good at pulling on my heart strings personally. I have already preordered the next one due out in August. My only complaint is Abbi only releases one of these a year!
This story follows Tallulah and Nash. Tallulah has always been over weight and over looked by her classmates. Except for Nash, who she has loved from afar. Until Nash’s cousin makes a comment about Tallulah’s weight right before school is dismissing for the summer before their senior year and Nash, who has always stood up for Tallulah, laughs. Tallulah of course over hears this and is heart broken but also very angry so she does was a lot of ladies do. She gets fit so she can get her revenge by being totally hot. Senior year begins and Nash is dealing with something. The story takes off from there. You wouldn’t imagine all of the drama that happens in these 319 pages because it’s a lot. But high school is dramatic.. and traumatic for some (most.) There were a few details in here that were convenient and not properly explained but I tried to see it for what it is… young adult. It isn’t supposed to be some intricate plot that is hard to follow along. But I would recommend this series to YA readers. If you’re only into adult romances and are super critical then maybe stick to the adult side of things but if you want fluffy contemporary then check this series out.
This is one of those books that some people are either going to relate to and completely LOVE and others are going to heavily criticize. Personally, I LOVED IT. Losing the Field is Book #4 in the Field Party Series. This is Abbi Glines’ YA Series that follows the HS football players of Lawton, a small town in Alabama. The first three books in the series all covered serious themes, including loss, hearing, cheating, broken families, rape, drugs, etc. This book was no different. Losing the Field followed Nash and Tallulah, who have gone to the same schools since they were in the first grade. Nash was a popular football player; one of the best with very promising future. Tallaluah was the book worm. She was smart and loved school, but she was the “fat” unpopular girl that everyone made fun of, except Nash. While Nash wasn’t her friend, he was always kind to Tallulah. All of that changed the end of their junior year when she heard him laughing at her after a comment was made about her. That moment was the moment Tallulah decided to change her appearance. She began running and walking and when senior year started she had physically transformed.
While Tallulah worked on her physical appearance during the summer, Nash’s life also took a turn for the worse. During a back yard football game, he injured one of his legs which led to permanent injuries that caused him a limp. He was no longer able to play football. Football had been everything to him. While everyone at school didn’t recognize Tallulah, Nash did. After spending some time together, Nash realized he had hurt her and apologized for laughing that last day of their junior year. Just when Nash and Tallulah begin to form a close relationship, a misunderstanding between Nash and Tallulah resulted in tragedy.
I will say that Mr. Dace’s obsession with Tallulah was uncomfortable. He was just a damn creep. I know she have said that they did not understand why Tallulah didn’t say anything from the beginning, but what some people don’t realize is when you are put in a position such as the one Dace put Tallulah in, sometimes the shock of the situation numbs you and you don’t know how to react, or what to do. It is so much easier to say “I would have done this” or “I would have done that” but when a situation like that impacts you, it isn’t as easy.
This Field Party Series thus far is one of the best YA series. It’s realistic. Some people don’t like the series themes that it covers or brings up, but these are things that are happening in today’s society. The truth is that a lot of high school students act the way these students did in these books. Some are superficial and physical appearance is very important. There are times in which we make decisions that will change our lives.
When a book captivates you from the beginning and makes you feel so many emotions (anger, discuss, hate, love, sadness, happiness, etc.), you know it is a book that is brilliantly written. I can’t wait for the next one.
I’m a huge fan of this series, I’ve loved all of them so far: Until Friday Night, Under the Lights, and After the Game. This book starts with the next grade of football players, only Nash Lee is no longer going to get to be a football star. I can say that I had barely started this book when I already didn’t want to get out of my car to stop listening. It was actually Tallulah’s story that got me crying. So much in her that I saw in myself. Her walking to lose weight reminded me of the summer I walked at least 20 miles a week and lost weight. How I wish I could do that again as easily. The story actually reminded me a bit of one of my favorite books by Jay Crownover, strangely with the name Nash, the male character in that book had the same name as this guy, and kind of did the same thing to the girl in both books. But there were some extra things I didn’t see coming, like a YouTube star, and a death, and so much more. Plus there was an added storyline of the teacher that made a huge impact at the end, one that had tears streaming down my face. A great book, and I can’t wait, or hope at least, that there will be more with the other guys on the team in future books.
Was excited to read it as I liked the others in the series, but having a YouTube star was kind of strange and I missed the characters from the other books. Still okay, not as good as the others
I really enjoyed this story of being lost, finding ones self, friendship, love, loss, heartache… it deals with so many things and it’s brought together beautifully.
The writing is great, the narrators (I purchased the audio and listened) were really good at bringing the characters voices to life. They did a great job.
Tallulah was a great character, she is the epitome of what some girls go through in HS. Being overweight most of her life, she’s no stranger to the snickers, harsh words, ridicule, heartache, loneliness, and feeling worthless and unloved. But she has a great spirit and tries to not let that get her down. I hated when she would put herself down because she really had some great qualities about her.
Nash was your typical jock, but he was always nice to Tallulah when she was invisible to everyone else, and she had went to school with this kids practically her entire life. Until an accident changed him. Everyone noticed, even Tallulah. He has a hard time accepting his fate and isn’t ready to face a life without his one main love, football.
Lots of lessons to be learned in this book, and how these characters handled these lessons (albeit they didn’t do so good at first, it took time, as with a lot of people. But they got there!) was great to see. Although I do think Tallulah could have been more forceful and adamant in a certain situation, but I know until her senior year and her weight loss, she was practically a wallflower and didn’t really know how to react to certain situations, not that it was her fault mind you, it wasn’t.
The only things I can “complain” about is that
1) she keeps saying how fat she was. But after one summer she went back skinny. She couldn’t have been too overweight that she went back after 3 months real skinny. And definitely wouldn’t be that huge of a transformation that kids at school wouldn’t recognize her. But then again, she was always a wallflower, blending into the background, not wanting to be noticed so that probably had more to do with it that her transformation. Lol
2) I WANTED AN EPILOGUE! Or at least another chapter or two. It seems we are left hanging just a bit there at the end. Not to spoil too much, but I wonder if she went back (those who read it know what I mea lol) and how others treated her after the fact. Truly, I really wanted more of these characters and hope maybe one day the author will do a bonus epilogue down the round for these two.
All in all, I really enjoyed the story and how things went. A great Friday night read. (Ironically I finished this on a Friday lol). Makes me miss HS football nights when my girls were in band.
