DIANA has been helping her father search for the Lost Treasure of Dreagle for nearly ten years. They’re closer than they’ve ever been, but when he’s killed and she’s taken captive by the men who shot him, she realizes that there’s no getting out of this alive. She’s been captured, and there’s only one thing that happens to girls who are taken on Dreagle. Resigned to her fate, she begins to adjust … adjust to her new life as a captive in the darkness.
Then Max comes, and everything changes.
MAX is the leader of an elite security team called EXTRINSIC. His team can find stolen artifacts, lost information, and captured hostages. They can find anything, for a price. When Extrinsic breaks up a group of Dreaglan smugglers, they’re surprised to discover the men have been stealing more than just lost museum pieces.
They’ve stolen a woman.
A beautiful woman.
The most beautiful woman Max has ever seen.
Diana is scared, terrified, and injured, but Max sees beauty where everyone else only sees pain.
Will she be brave enough to let Max love her?
Is he strong enough to stay with her through the darkness?
“You’re a shining star, and what do stars do? They float in the darkness.”

Diana and her father were well known treasure hunters who were targeted by a criminal gang. Her father is killed and Diana is captured and tortured for months until she is found by an elite group sent to catch the leader of the gang. Fate has a hand in it when Max is the one who rescues Diana and they form an immediate bond. Diana’s trauma is handled sensitively and she and Max’s relationship is believable. Falling for her rescuer
Star Princess is the first book in the In the Darkness series by Sophie Stern. If you take a kidnap, traumatized, rescued and fall in love with big, handsome rescuer story and place it happening in space then you have the basis of Star Princess. But there is a lot more going on and a lot more depth to the story-line and the characters. This is a fast moving story that centers on Diana and Max. There is a lot of suspense, action, heartbreak, romance and of course sparking chemistry flying around. I look forward to reading the next book in this series.
I received a copy of this book for my honest review. My opinions are all my own.
Wow what a book. Poor Diana finds herself a prisoner after they kill her father, she is only allowed out of her little cage either to be beaten or used. Then salvation comes in the form of Max, he sees Diana in her cage beaten naked shaking from cold and is furious. He rescues Diana and is drawn to her but with her trauma all he does is care for her but where do they go from here? Max is every women’s dream guy, Diana is so strong for surviving her trauma you just pray for the HEA she deserves. I just couldn’t put the book down.

**Spoilers **
To say I was shocked when I read this book is to put it nicely. I’ve probably read a half dozen of Ms. Stern’s books already and reviewed each of them through Booksprout, and I have loved each and every one of them. A couple have very similar themes, but the actual story itself is different. So I really wasn’t expecting this book to be much different than the others.
Now, I am not not one to leave “spoilers” when I give my reviews. In fact, I almost never use character names even, because mainly the reader will either already know the names, or I don’t want to “spoil” any of the story. We as reviewers can describe the story without giving away the storyline. If we can’t, we really shouldn’t be reviewing in my opinion. But every once in a while, there comes a story you just HAVE to give something of the story away, or you could be doing other readers a disservice instead of doing the Author a favor by reviewing, and Star Princess by Sophie Stern just happens to be that story.
This story has so much depth and character to it, right from the beginning. The female protagonist is spending time with her Father, excited to possibly be making history when a personal catastrophe occurs. She is taken prisoner where she is practically starved, beaten, and raped repeatedly. The book talks about how she attempted suicide three different times to end her imprisonment before she was finally rescued.
Now, I’m not going to say it’s wrong, especially since everyone is different and everyone who experiences trauma like this processes it in their own way, and given that this is a fictional story. I have worked with victims of rape and sex trafficking, and I, myself, am the victim of rape. I can’t think of anyone I know or met who has experienced this, that is willing to fall into bed with literally the first man they know after being rescued. But, as the female protagonist did mention in this story, it was HER decision, and it was about HER taking back control of HER life. So, that being said, more power to the female protagonist! And more more to the hero for realizing that yes, she’s beautiful; yes, he wants to get lucky; yes, it’s soon; but IT’S HER CHOICE WHAT HAPPENS, and he was going to respect whichever decision she made, regardless of how it made him feel physically.
I wish there was just one or two words I could use to describe this story, but honestly, it has to be read to get the entire array of emotions this story evokes. It is a beautiful story, that is well written and yes, even cheesy in a few spots, but that’s actually needed to lighten up the heavier parts at the beginning of the book. While I thought the previous books I read of Ms. Stern’s were great, this one was by far, the most PHENOMENAL of all her books. It’s the one that is sure to leave a lasting impression, long after the last page has been read and you’re tucked safely in your bed, saying “It’s only a dream. It’s only a dream. Damn.”

Max saves his true mate!
by sewsummore
Diana and her father were treasure hunters on the trail of a lost treasure when they were attacked. Her father was killed and for three and a half months she was raped, tortured and beaten before she was rescued. Max was a member of an Elite Mercenary force who were under contract to catch the leader of the men who had stolen a precious heirloom of the King. Diana was in poor shape both physically and mentally but through her recovery he was there for her. This was a short, intense read with a happy ending. Max was a man who fought for the innocent and down trodden and from the start his attraction to Diana made it hard for him to stay away from her. When she said she loved him he was frightened it was just because he was the one to rescue her, but she soon made him realized that she had been beaten, but not broken and knew her own mind.
