I have to begin by mentioning that though these are the first published books by this author, they are not the first books I’ve read by her. I began with the Rise of the Realms series which keeps me absolutely riveted to the pages. However, reading The Cloven Pack Series answered questions about some of the characters who appeared in Rise of the Realms which clarified so many situations in the story so far. And it made me love The Cloven Pack so much more.
In the first book – A Gifted Curse – we meet Evo Johnson who has become the new alpha of the pack after challenging his father and winning the position. Though it isn’t something he wanted to do, he knew it was necessary for the survival of the pack. And that is his main concern, especially since he’s been called in by the FBI to look into the disappearance of several women. This is when he comes up against a private investigator, Makenna Goldwin, who has inherited a gift that allows her to be able to tell when someone is lying. She has also been hired to find a missing girl. Though they’re both headstrong and clash on many levels, there is an attraction that both of them are having trouble ignoring. As the investigation brings them closer together, the danger becomes more real and originates from much closer to home than they realized, and Evo discovers some things about Makenna that could be a game changer.
The second book – Out of the Darkness – is the story of Brenna Johnson, Evo’s little sister, who has known who her mate is most of her life. Though Benjamin Grobin has been friends with Brenna since she was little, he is now the pack Beta. The males of the pack seem to be a bit thickheaded when it comes to sensing their predestined mates, and with his Beta responsibilities, Ben never slows down long enough to realize that Brenna is his. Their packmate, Flint, finds himself attracted to Brenna in a big way and has no trouble stepping up to the plate when she’s looking for someone to “play” with. But when retaliation from a place no one expected puts the pack at risk, the danger forces all of the to face more than any of them expected, and Ben might just have to step up to the plate to save not just Brenna but the other packmates.
The final book – Above this Grave – brings us to a pivotal moment in the packs survival. With Flint Rockland facing his return to the pack after the horrifying events of the previous days, his wolf is afraid of being unable to defend him and his packmates from danger, so Flint is unable to find his way to the surface and change back. Irene Scott, midwife for the Riva pack, is sent to the Cloven pack to help with Makenna’s pregnancy, and she hears the stories about Flint being caged inside his quarters, refusing to shift back to his human. After months of visiting the pack, keeping a secret that could destroy everything, she feels a need to visit Flint. Maybe she can do something to help. When they meet and Flint finally shifts, their entire world changes. There’s a rogue storm coming, and it could mean the end of the Cloven pack.
I was mesmerized by these stories and how each intertwined into the next. The danger and intrigue was exciting, and the relationships brewing were hot and steamy. These were edge of the seat stories with the perfect amount of uncertainty and insecurity to carry the romances and the conflicts along. And finding out where these characters came from helps the next series by the author make so much more sense. Her writing improves with each story, and I’m excited to see what she has in store next.
I don’t read a lot of shifter fiction but this is the second series I’ve read by this author. I love not only her voice but the world’s she creates. She is definitely an author to follow.
