When Jesse McDermitt leaves the Marine Corps, he has no idea what he will do for the rest of his life. He only knows he doesn’t want to spend the coming winter anywhere cold. His greatest skill is killing people from up to a mile away and he knows there aren’t many job opportunities in the civilian world for that.Jesse also knows his way around boats and has an old friend living free and easy in … and easy in the Florida Keys. Being an experienced diver and angler, he immediately heads south toward Key West and the end of the road.
With a single comment, a waitress in a waterfront restaurant in north Key Largo shakes loose a long dormant dream and Jesse runs with it. With the help of friends, new and old, he buys just the right boat to live on and soon starts a part time charter business. Everything is going smoothly, until a Carolina girl and a hurricane hit him at the same time.
Danger lurks in the sleepy little town of Marathon, in the middle of the Florida Keys, as well as in the swamps of the Everglades. But danger doesn’t expect to run into a man like Jesse. A man who will not only respond swiftly in facing it, but with a vengeance unexpected.

This entire series is very enjoyable. Jesse McDermitt is a character comparable to those of Robert Parker, Stuart Woods, and Connelly. Very innovative, very brave, and very committed to the good guys. Every one is a very good read for adventure lovers.
third time I’ve read this book, Retired military man meets the world. great escapism well done.
Nice character creation.
Fast read. Kept my attention from beginning to end.
Main character was masculine but real. Not detail oriented. Interesting info on FA keys and charters. Several exciting action episodes.
Enjoy this author
Great Mystery
The book did not have as much action as I like but it sure was interesting. I have never read so much detail about the Keys. None of the plots or exploits were stretched too far. Actions are close to reality.
I enjoyed this book very much. The characters were more interesting than the usual action thriller. However, the descriptions of the local Florida life and nautical details were really exceptional. I finished it in one sitting and was left wanting more.
Great story from beginning till end
interesting story of a retired Marine moving to Florida for fishing, diving and people watching. I liked it enough to go get the next one of the series. Easy read –
Good shoot-em-up. Good character build got to know them. Always hurts when someone you like gets hurt or killed. Still I have been enjoying the other books that follow
Enjoyed this book immensely and can’t wait to read his other novels
I am enjoying the Wayne Stinnett Jesse McDermitt books. Great and colorful settings and characters. I’m liking the warm sunny weather on boats!
Great, thought provoking read
Fun read!
Very little action development in this book. A lot of build up and little time spent on any action. Not much of a page turner- would not recommend
Good writer, easy read.
When Jesse McDermitt returned from the Marine Corps, having no living family beside an ex-wife and two daughters he hadn’t seen in years, he decided to go to the Florida Keys to visit an old Marine Corps friend and try to decide what to do with the rest of his life. At a restaurant, two waitresses had a bet about his profession – either a dive …
I could not get interested in the plot
