Some say life is a grand adventure—but for Lady Abigail Rutland, it’s a tremendous bore. As a woman of noble birth in eighteenth-century England, she is expected to keep quiet and marry well, but she longs for so much more. “Be careful what you wish for,” the old saying goes. After a chaotic night, she wakes up in the hold of a former slaver with her body bound and her hair shorn. She is soon … shorn. She is soon “rescued” by an American privateer, who assumes she is a cabin boy and puts her to work. Eager for adventure, Abigail maintains her disguise despite a budding attraction to the infamous Captain Jacob Thorne. Meanwhile, Captain Thorne schemes to spring his kin from a British prison.
What follows is a thrilling tale that tosses and churns with the high seas. Set during the height of the American Revolution, Sweet Vengeance contains accurate historical details that enrich and complicate the story. Abigail yearns for danger and excitement, and it isn’t long before she discovers that the most urgent peril comes from within her own wild heart.

Great introduction to the Duke of Rutland Series!
I really enjoyed Sweet Vengeance written by Elizabeth St. Michel!
The author’s descriptive style of writing and wonderful characters, like Captain Jacob Thorne and Abigail, daughter of the Duke of Rutland, are nicely blended into a fast paced high sea adventure. Let yourself be swept away to England’s 18th century! Sweet Vengeance is fun to read and filled with passion and intrigue! Ms. St. Michel is a talented writer and an excellent storyteller, she never disappoints me!
This new series, set during the height of the American Revolution, revolves around the powerful Duke of Rutland, a widower and his four children, one daughter and three sons. In Sweet Vengeance, we follow Abigail’s wild adventure during which she is kidnapped and saved by a charming privateer named Captain Jacob Thorne. Their story starts on a funny note! Jacob, disguised as a vicar, receives her most secret confidence, craving adventure because her life is so rigid and boring. Since, she doesn’t know what she really wants, she pretends to be betrothed to Humphrey, a friend of hers. But this arrangement will be ruined by Jacob! When she is found in a precarious situation, she’ll need the help of Jacob. That’s when the fun begins! Their new relationship is however complicated! Together, they will embark on journey of twists and turns that will keep you interested until the very last page. Will Abigail ever find excitement in her life with Jacob? Will her world be turned upside down? I’m looking forward to reading next, Anthony’s own story.
I absolutely loved this book. The hero Julian sails the Atlantic as a privateer. Abby, a duke’s daughter, is expected to marry well but feels constrained by her circumstances and longs for adventure. A mystery is interwoven throughout the book. Abby is kidnapped, put on a ship where she is almost killed by the cruel captain before being rescued by Julian. This book has it all: a great romance, compelling mystery, passion and a damaged hero brought to his knees by love.
Great story, Abby was smart, tough, brave everything you want in a heroine…Thorne was kind of a jerk, so set in his ideas, so because I command it….he ticked me off, a lot. I think Abby forgave him far too easily, he needed to humble himself for it, in my opinion…be prepared for the unfinished mystery…the build up for the series
This is one of the best love stories ever. Written to let you feel the emotions of the characters, with heart and soul. Several twists and surprises kept me not wanting to put the book down. I very highly recommend this book. It’s one of the better ones.
