North and South is the first in John Jakes’s Civil War trilogy by the same name. The book chronicles the forging of the bond between the Yankee Hazards and the Southern Mains, two family of long lineage and impressive wealth who are brought together by the sons’ enrollment at West Point in the late (18)30’s. Orry Main and George Hazard become best …
Gives new insight to the civil war. Characters were sure how they felt before the war but soon discovered the war changed everything and nothing at the same time.
Excellent! My top Civil War series in Historical Fiction! That’s why they made the tv series!
North and South brought reality to the Civil War. It has been romanticized so much that you forget the pain that so many families went through. It also helped me realize all the underhanded political aspects of the war and Reconstruction. As a history teacher, I loved the book series.
Excellent series about civil war. Memorable characters.
Awesome!!
I read this book years ago when I lived in America, and it was interesting seeing the Civil War from both sides. I brought this book home to England with me.
It’s special to me for several reasons.
Loved it.
I read this many years ago but it has stayed with me as an adventurous
story.
I chose to revisit North And South again to reconnect with the whole story because the producers of the mini-series cut a few key characters out of the story and physically altered other characters there by taking away a lot from the story. By reading the books I get visit with the real characters of the story not the so called ‘made for TV …
This series should be required reading for all.
I first read this book back in the 1970’s and decided to reread the trilogy. I am 3/4 of the way through with “North and South” and it is just as wonderful as I remembered! I love John Jakes’ writing; he knows how to take his readers on the journey with him!!
