The day her mother passed away, Beulah was only given a name. That was it. No other explanation.
Portia Van Allan was not someone Beulah could believe her mother ever knew. Wealthy, self-absorbed and other than the fact Portia was supplying special care for Beulah’s sister, Portia was cruel.

Jasper Van Allan doesn’t know why his mother has hired a young gorgeous blonde to take care of the house and almost lets her go before he finds out the truth.
Realizing there’s more to Beulah than a stunning face, he keeps finding reasons to be near her all the time. It’s all falling into place, it all begins to make sense . . . until the real lies, the dark secrets, and the skeletons come tumbling out of the Van Allan closet. Everything I want in romance. Angsty, emotional, forbidden and HOT! Abbi Glines at her best!
In Sweet Little Thing we meet Beulah Edwards and Jasper Van Allen. Jasper inherited his fathers company and managed all his finances. Beulah is the hired help in his home. Jasper returned home early to find a new beautiful maid working in his home. His mother Portia hadn’t mentioned hiring someone younger.
Beulah’s more than a stunning face. She’s almost twenty working in the Van Allen’s home. When her mother died she left Heidi in her care. Heidi has Down Syndrome. Beulah couldn’t work and take care of her sister full time, in the letter her mother left, it instructed her to go to Portia, she owed her a favor. Portia placed Heidi in a place for special needs people.
Jasper was home for the summer bringing along his friend Stone. Stone didn’t approve of Beulah. She was the help and people of their status looked down upon the help.
The concept is simple: Beulah wonders how it’s possible that her kind sweet mother knew a woman like Portia. Portia was a cold mean woman.
I felt like I had read this story before. Do you get the feeling you know how the story will turn out before it happens? That’s how I felt. I questioned myself thinking have I read this before? I hadn’t. When the truth was explained all I say was, “I knew it”.
I was once an Abbi Glines fan back when she wrote Fallen Too Far. Since then every time I try to read one of her books I feel like I’ve read it before. Abbi’s writing style and voice doesn’t call to me the way it once did. This book seems far too similar to Fallen Too Far.
Abbi is a detailed writer paying particular attention to minute details of which I could care less about. This read like a daily diary describing each days activities from morning until night. Too many inconsequential words. It was unnecessary to explain every word or action. Let a reader fill in the details themself. Beulah was always explaining herself. I hated the damsel in distress routine. I got tired of hearing how attractive all of these young characters were.
Narrators:
Samantha Summers voiced Beulah’s character. I enjoyed the southern twang.
Kyle Munley was the voice of Jasper.
This was my first time listening to both narrators. I enjoyed both. This was a dual narration.
Audible provides the highest quality audio and narration. This was an unabridged audiobook. Listening time 6 hours 38 minutes. I listened at 2.3x speed reducing the listening time.
It’s times like these when I appreciate a good narration experience. Had it not been for these narrators I would’ve skimmed read this book. Instead I enjoyed listening to both narrators perform the scenes. They enhanced my listening experience with great voice actor skills. I appreciated these narrators taking the time to perform these characters scenes.
I really enjoyed “Sweet Little Thing” book 1 in the “Sweet” series by Abbi Glines. This is an interesting plotline that while feels similar to the start of her Rosemary series it stands on its own. The characters are full of mystery and grab you right away and make you want to read more and more to see where the story leads.
Great entertainment and I’m looking forward to future books in the series.
Happy Reading…enjoy!
Wow. This book is so good. I couldn’t put it down. It kept me interested from start to finish. OhMgee that ending. Heading to get book 2 now!!!
Holy moly, where has Abbi Glines been all my life? Okay, so my bad… I have no idea why this is the first Abbi book I’ve read, but I finished this sucker in just two days! The sexual tension between Beulah and Jasper was delicious and desperate and tantalizing in just the right way. Get ready to get lost in this one because it’s hard to come up for air!
Beware of a dreadful cliffhanger ending! Has sexual content too.
Aside from the the ending, I enjoyed this book immensely!! Beulah is 19 and one of the sweetest, most responsible, selfless people ever. Beulah’s mom died about six months ago and left her with figuring out how to care for her twin sister Heidi, who has Down syndrome. Beulah loves her sister. She never complains. Just before her mom died, she gave Beulah a name and address to go to for help if she needed it. Right after the funeral, Beulah went the rich Portia who have her a housekeeper job and paid for a home for Heidi as her wages. Portia was not a happy woman, not even a nice woman, but Beulah never complained because her sister was cared for….until Portia’s son Jasper came home. Jasper coming home changed everything.
I have been a fan of Abbi Glines for awhile now and this book doesn’t disappoint. The female lead is strong and more than any other if the shallow females around, but doesn’t she herself as such. There is such a build up of Beulah I was just waiting for something to come crashing down, hoping it wouldn’t because the poor girl deserves a whole lot of good. This story sucked me in from the beginning. The big crash at the end wasn’t a total shock, but I DO have to read the next book to see how Beulah deals with the crappy news.
Okay so… I think that this book, while good, was a poor copy of another book by this author. If you have read Fallen Too Far, and liked it… skip this book. This book is very similar and does not live up to this authors previous stories or the other version of this story. Read Fallen Too Far instead.
What I did like was the interaction between the two main characters, the way the story flowed, the heart that was involved in the story and the realistic depictions of Heidi. What I didn’t enjoy as much was the weakness of the main women, the lack of emotion or connection to the story, and the was I was constantly comparing this story to Fallen Too Far.
Here is how similar the two books are:
Male lead is rich, an ass, but caring and sweet underneath.
Female lead is shy, out of her element, needs direction, little backbone.
Evil mother character, angry ex girlfriend or sister.
Friends that are arrogant but also helpful.
Female lives in small room, under stairs/basement.
Slow burn turns to instant love.
BIG drama leads to semi-cliffhanger ending, must buy book two.
There are more similarities, but these are the main ones. As stated above if you have not read Fallen Too Far, skip this book and read it instead, because book two in this series is a complete let down and doesn’t give the reader anything they want or need.
This is my first read by this author and I like her writing. This story is beautifully constructed and pull me in from the beginning. But about midway I realized there would be a sequel and the twist was fairly predictable. The heroine, Beulah, was terrific. She was a little too naive and trusting but has a beautiful soul. I hope she matures in the next story. The other characters were almost like characatures. Hopefully, they’re further developed in the next book, which I’ve started. The author makes you care about our heroine and I’m looking forward to finishing the sequel.
