My favorite rom-com! Birthquake is funny as hell, romantic, and REAL!
Birthquake was my first experience with any of BL Berry’s work and it was completely amazing! Jeff is such a sweetheart with a true heart of gold. I enjoy reading about alpha heroes, but a sweet hero always steals my heart in a way alphas just can’t. Plus, Jeff has a wonderful sense of humor. The one-liners and comedy in Birthquake is outstanding. BL had me laughing so hard I was crying on more than one occasion. Birthquake is now my #1 romantic comedy.
I voluntarily received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
“I’m not weird. But if I am, the only reason you found me was because you were attracted to my weirdo light in the first place. Which makes you a weirdo, too.” -Henley
Jeff meets Henley on a plane ride. The encounter is super awkward and adorable. They exchange numbers and the relationship goes from there. Close to a year later the couple have a crazy night at Jeff’s brother’s wedding that leads to an unexpected bundle of joy. Henley’s adventure to motherhood is crazy, funny, awkward and somewhat terrifying to her but no matter what Jeff is there showing her support and love. Their journey may not have been conventional but it was perfect and Henley wouldn’t change a thing.
I loved Birthquake! I laughed so hard that my sides hurt and my eyes started tearing up while reading this book. My cheeks actually started hurting too from smiling so much. It is a romance that is the perfect combination of funny and sweet. Jeff and Henley’s story is one I really enjoyed reading and will not forget anytime soon.
I’m so glad this book was recommended to me and I look forward to reading more of B.L. Berry’s work.
I picked up this book with no idea what the story was. The title and short teaser had me in a giggle. And trust me when I say, Birthquake is just what this romance lover needed.
The best thing about this story was it’s complete reliability of the characters. Their awkward and charming personalities leaped off the page. Just someone you know you could be insta-friends in this romantic comedy. It’s delightful to see both the characters stumble and make those everyday couple mistakes. Secondary characters come in and fly out with wit and wisdom. Their families, jobs and friends are wonderfully entertwined with BL Berry wrapping you up in story without wringing you out in the drama.
Don’t worry, there is a minor twist that gives a little gasp and oh sh!t moment for those who need a bit of tension.
I don’t believe you need to have gone through the marriage and baby carriage to appreciate the humor Ms Berry brings the tale. I may have enjoyed parts more by holding a seasoned empathy. But this isn’t 8th grade health class meant to steer you clear of the maternity clock. Its fun and humor in the everyday that makes for an entertaining read.
4.5 out of 5 stars
This is one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. I was actually laughing or smiling 95% of the time while reading this book. I absolutely loved the characters; but Tara, Henley and Jeff were definitely my favorites because they kept me entertained. Jeff was the perfect baby daddy; he was so loving, charming, patient and thoughtful. He actually wanted to experience some things mothers go through; another laugh out loud moment. He and Henley were perfect for each other. Two of my favorite parts in this story was definitely the wedding reception, and childhood bedroom scenes along with many more. This book is perfect for anyone looking for an enjoyable read that will absolutely brighten up your day and leave you smiling. I look forward to my next read from this author.
It has been awhile since I have laughed this hard while reading a book. Tara, has got to be one of the funniest characters I have ever read . I laughed so hard I was crying at times . My husband who never reads by the way wanted to know why I was laughing and he read some and also started cracking up . I also liked how the author didn’t sugar coat real issues couples have and also the issues/ hormones women have during pregnancy or aftetrwards. PPD is something that is series and is often not taken as such . I liked how she actual talked about the freak outs women have while pregnant like losing ones ankles. It was a real down to earth story that had serious notes , while hilarious at times.
I loved this book! The portrayal of relationships, pregnancy and parenthood was laugh out loud funny! Will definitely be reading more from this author.
Birthquake is not your typical rom-com……and I say that in a good way. The story had such a different feel and flow to it, and I truly did love every minute of the story! I hadn’t even finished reading one chapter and I think I laughed more in that time frame than I have on other rom-com stories. Not only did I laugh, but I cried at moments too. I think being a mom myself, I could relate to some of the thoughts and feelings that Henley felt over her pregnancy and birth. Being a mom is hard, and do we ever really know what we are doing? Henley was extremely lucky to have such a wonderful and supportive partner in Jeff. He did so many ridiculously cute and swoony things – seriously how can you not love that guy? By no means was he perfect, but then again nobody is. I loved how Henley and Jeff were just normal, everyday people……trying to make their way through love and life together. And what can I say about Henley’s best friend Tara? Sign me up to have a friend like her!
I wish I could say more about this story, but I don’t want to spoil things for anyone. This was just a fun, feel-good story, and I definitely will read it again!
Henley and Jeff are awesome characters! Fun, solid and caring as individuals yet as a couple they’re even stronger. Their love and devotion to each other is phenomenal.
This story is full of funny antics! The scary thing is, I can easily imagine them happening in real life as well LOL! That’s the other thing that makes this book so amazing…it has a realistic feel to it. It’s more like a real relationship between two real people who have fun together. It’s not full of fluff, embellished sex scenes and lovey-dovey stuff yet it still gives you ALLLL the feels! This author’s writing is spot on, as it has been in all of her other books as well.
This isn’t what has become the “typical” romance, it’s better! We get to see how Jeff & Henley meet but we also get to experience their dating lives. It shows them as a couple instead of some guy/girl doing the chasing thing or a reunion that leads to a second chance. Nothing wrong with those but they’ve become very common so the fact that this one is “different”, well, it’s refreshing to me. Something else that I loved about this is that it’s a very engaging read. There is a lot of interaction between the characters and very little inner monologue. I absolutely love this because so many times, all the inner monologue just bores me to tears. Definitely NOT an issue with this book. I definitely recommend this one to anyone that needs a laugh or even just a smile.
” Even if it’s not some perfectly scripted traditional fairy tale, it’s still yours. It was a strange, unconventional path that led us here. But really, it wasn’t strange at all”
Birthquake gave me the best stomach ache possible. I laughed so much while reading this book my stomach was (and still is) hurting. Grab some tissues to wipe those tears off your face, grab a glass of your favorite beverage, find a comfy spot and settle in for a hilarious read on motherhood!
