This is an amazing adventure into history and deep Mexico. A crazy time in Mexico during Maximilian’s reign. This story takes place during the unrest when Juarez takes back Mexico from Maximilian and runs the French out of Mexico. This story is actually based on two love stories, Sarah and Gilberto and Diana and Seguin. Each have their own issues and deal with them as each occasion rise. Diana is a woman who knows her mind and her heart. She is intelligent and cool under fire. She must fight to keep Seguin, but is willing to give him up if cannot offer her love. Sarah is flighty and impulsive, and her relationship with Gilberto is rushed and against her parents and Gilberto’s father wishes. Their love is pure and deep, at least Gilberto’s is to defy his father and take a ship all the way back from Europe to San Fransisco to get back to Sarah. The adventure begins as soon as you start reading from Veracruz to Mexico City across the Sierra Madras to Acapulco. Love must conquer parents, a cutthroat, rival mining companies, a war and a man with a closed heart.
This book was romantic and action packed. I loved that the author was able to tell two different stories and keep them both exciting. I look forward to reading more books by Hebby Roman. I received this book free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily reviewed this book. This is my honest opinion.
I was not sure what to expect from this book when I first picked it up. I did end up liking it. I did like the introduction at the beginning that gave us information about the story that came from a real diary and that most of the rest of the characters were made up.
Diana Mcfarland and her best friend Sarah are the first main characters that we meet when you first start reading. We see a preview of when they are young and when Diana’s father James is let go from his job and then they have to move. This gave me an idea of what to expect of her father because it seemed like he was the move around type of guy. So when we see that her dad is dead in Mexico and they are down there to get his stuff it really did not surprise me. We learn that Diana is a strong willed woman for that day and age and she is willing to stand up for her father and his ideas and make sure that her and her mother are taken care of. This is where we meet Seguin who was her fathers business partner that still wanted the formula to help with silver mining. We learn of his troubled past. We end up meeting several of Seguin’s family members a couple of them very unsavory guys.
It was well worth the read.

I love the Spanish language, I’ve studied it and Mexico for several years. Reading this story was a breath of fresh air and new excitement in a genre that I enjoy. I enjoyed the friendship the heroines has and how it played out in the story. The love and support between the two. The struggles the brothers had. Then there was the romance, it was good! So good! I am looking forward to more great adventures with this author.

In this well written historical adventure romance, there is revenge, intrigue, murder and revolution. The writer takes one into the interesting, if violent, times just before the Mexican war in 1865. Diana and her mother arrive in Mexico to the news that her father, James McFarland, has just been murdered and whilst it would appear that the motive is robbery, nothing has been taken. Diana suspects that whoever was in his room was looking for his secret scientific formula that would expedite the process of producing silver. When the enigmatic Seguin Torres arrives at the hotel at the same time as Diana, she suspects that he might be behind her father’s murder and she proceeds with the utmost caution. The story takes on so many twists and turns that the reader could easily get lost in the plots within plots, but the writer has the ability keep her audience’s attention and to keep one fully involved. Ultimately Diana is forced to rely on Seguin, especially when it would seem that her own life is in danger and the real villain is being thwarted at every turn. I found the background to this book interesting and it kept me almost as riveted as the story-line itself. I loved Suguin’s character and his ability to push aside his feelings about intelligent women, which is just as well as Diana refuses to be left out of negotiations and adventures. This is a really enjoyable and informative book. I received this book for free from eBook Discovery. I voluntarily post this review. This is my honest review.
