It’s only the second day of 1924, but Mary Russell and her husband, Sherlock Holmes, find themselves embroiled in intrigue. It starts with a New Year’s visit from Holmes’s brother Mycroft, who comes bearing a strange package containing the papers of an English spy named Kimball O’Hara — the same Kimball known to the world through Kipling’s famed Kim. Inexplicably, O’Hara withdrew from the “Great … “Great Game” of espionage and now he has just as inexplicably disappeared.
When Russell discovers Holmes’s own secret friendship with the spy, she knows the die is cast: she will accompany her husband to India to search for the missing operative. But Russell soon learns that in this faraway and exotic land, it’s often impossible to tell friend from foe — and that some games aren’t played for fun but for the highest stakes of all… life and death.

A great read in this series – I love these books and the characters keep me coming back for more. If you are a true Sherlock Holmes fan you will love every book in this series. The Game does not disappoint.
The Game has everything I love about this series: disguises, intrigue, danger, wit, adventure, romance, and mystery. One of my favorite in the series! Although, my favorite in the series seems to be whichever book I’m currently reading.
I’ve probably read the series four times, but one of the things I love about the Mary Russell and Sherlock …
Great series. Read them all
All of Laurie King’s Sherlock Holmes books are wonderful. A thoroughly enjoyable series.
Part of a great Sherlock Holmes series— Sherlock in his older years. Main character is his young, female protege, Mary Russell, who becomes his wife. Wonderful prose.
King does an excellent job of keeping to the time period and while expanding Holmes keeps his inherent character intact.
This one of the better stories in the series. Holmes and Russell work with a special agent of the Raj.
I love anything by Laurie King. This book is written in her usual space-turner style and set in a particularly interesting place. The more I read about Mary Russell, the more I want to read.
Not up to her usual standard. I normally give her books five stars, but this one had less action which means less time spent on the characters and far too much time spent on narrative of historical events.
I have always loved the Sherlock Holmes stories, and when my book club read one of the King stories, I was hooked. I have since read all that my library has, and I have never been disappointed. Laurie R. King is a master of the mystery novel, but her spin on the relationship between her main character and Sherlock goes beyond masterful!
I have read almost all of L. King’s works and enjoyed every one.
Read Kipling’s _Kim_ first. You don’t have to, to enjoy this book, but it’s fun to look for references to it.
Love Laurie King always.
Love all the Mary Russell books and this one is no exception.
As always, Laurie R. King writes amazing novels. The Game is a combination of meticulous research, wit and whimsy, Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes, and Rudyard Kipling’s Kim. I absolutely loved the adventure through across the Atlantic and through India. Mary Russell was at her sharpest!
*if you haven’t read Kim, I also highly recommend it.
Love the idea of Sherlock solving mysteries with young wife.
Another superb Laurie King novel. Excellent writing and clever story lines. We’re introduced (re-introduced) early on to a character named Kimball O’Hara, who the literary world knows as Kipling’s Kim. Mary Russell learns her husband has his secret friendship with the spy, and accompanies Sherlock to India. The chase is on and the stakes never …
Loved this book.
Entertaining take on Holmes mysteries. Enjoyed the characters and always find the mysteries engaging in this series.
Not the best of the Mary Russell series, but still worth the read. The next in the series is even better!
