I loved the mix of mystery/thriller with supernatural aspects of the crimes. The main character is smart and engaging and is dealing with the hardest time in her personal life while struggling to solve macabre crimes. I devoured all 3 books in a row and am eagerly waiting for the next.
My favorite JF Penn books thus far. The first book in this trilogy grabbed me by the throat from page one and kept me reading until I’d finished all three. Penn’s ability to get in the mind of her characters shines in these stories, and her research into the darkest areas of human history is impressive. Simply brilliant!
Great for readers who enjoy dark, psychological thrillers with a hint of mysticism and the unknown. Not for readers afraid of explorations of violence and the darkest side of human nature. If you appreciate the exploration of the mind and the many ways it can twist, you’ll love Penn’s B&D thrillers.
Desecration
While going through a personal tragedy Detective Jamie Brooke comes across a cult of severe with the amount of blood and gore expected from the author, this book does not disappoint and is a fine read in the fantasy horror genre.
Delirium
Another fine read with the usual horrific scenes typical of the author. Set in modern-day Bedlam there has to be lots of insanity in the story but you’ll soon find that this historic building is part of the fabric of British society.
Deviance
Brings together some themes found in the other two books in the trilogy.
Usual amount of gory detail in this horror fantasy with a twinge of Celtic mysticism in the supernatural ending above London.
Another great read from this author who has a giggling personality but writes such bloodthirsty prose.
I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and any opinions expressed herein are my own.
This boxset consists of three books – Desecration, Delirium, and Deviance. Each of the books deals with a dark and many times unknown members of our society. These books are gripping, often times pushing the comfort zone, but still compelling enough that you cannot and do not look away. The stories are well-researched and written – not gratuitous or demeaning but creepy and at times, very evil. The MC Jaime Brooke is such a well-developed character that you can feel her personal pain and her, at times, disconnection with others that you root for her to engage [even if it’s just for one dance of the tango]. Jaime’s bond with Blake – a psychic who is so tortured that he must wear gloves to prevent himself from having constant visions – is heartwrenching.
Trigger Warnings: Rape of an unconscious woman, dissection of the dead, torture, abuse of the mentally ill
The narrator, Rosalind Ashford, is excellent and did a great job bringing the story to life.
Not really my kind of book but I couldn’t put it down. This is for the first book. I will read the next.
I read the first book in the set of three. The stories are well written but very, very dark and filled with characters who represent pure evil. Their motivations seem to be simply to inflict pain and suffering on others for their own pleasure.
I found this aspect of the story too much for me to consume all three books back-to-back. I may read the other two books – not sure yet – but will likely need a break between them.
I’m into the 2nd book and although i enjoy the main character and the writing , the story is a little too creepy for me. The bad guys are very deranged.
This was a set of three mysteries. If you like mysteries about crazy, bizarre cults and insane people who commit horrible murders, this is the book for you. Two of these was enough for me.
I picked up this book by mistake. I wish I knew it was the work of a woman but the initials didn’t show. Quit reading on page 95 because I wanted to give her credit and go on. The tango scene was the straw that broke my back and the detailed description of the protagonist’s feeling after she succeeded to reel in the dance-partner of her dream. This is not what I want to read in a British murder mystery.
Weird, not my cup of tea.
Haven’t read yet!
Author seems to have a morbid interest in things like skinning people alive, or the ways the mentally ill were tortured.
Good series. A little bit of horror, a little of the paranormal, some police procedural, genuine places and people and London history, action…plus . Interesting characters.
not fond of this type of writing. found it very unsettling, to say the least.
1st was so greusome , i didn’t read the others.Well wriitten, but just not for me
I was a little disappointed. I like a romance, but really like an action pact thriller. The plot sounded great, but did not deliver. Too much sex, not enough adventure.
Really great background on characters adds to interest of the story. A detective with a very sick, but brilliant daughter still doing her job. A great balance of emotion and intrigue!
Fans of Dan Brown should read these. They also give a modern day view of London.
I enjoyed the characters and the strength of the female protagonist
