1375 A.D. – When Sir Christopher “Kit” Emory’s beloved mother falls ill, he decides to seek the help of someone he met briefly at the royal court years ago—Lady Alys de Montfort, a renowned healer despite her young age. While traveling to her home at Kinwick Castle, Kit is accosted by a band of highwayman, who beat and rob him, leaving him to die. Fortunately, an escort party comes across him and … and Lady Alys insists they take the stranger home so she can use her skill in the healing arts to save his life.
The man awakens and has no memory of his identity, but Alys believes he might be Kit Emory, a young man she’d met once when she was a young girl. Kit comforted her when the queen died and Alys never forgot his kindness to her. Alys does what she can to jog Kit’s memory, even as she struggles with her growing attraction to him, knowing Kit was betrothed and must now be wed. Kit also finds his desire deepening for Alys, but he doesn’t know his own name, much less if he has a wife or family. Until he recalls who he is, he refuses to commit his heart to Alys.
Once Kit regains his memory and realizes he is free to pursue Alys, their road to love is anything but smooth.
Join Kit and Alys as they overcome events that continue to tear them apart and threaten the love they have for one another.

It’s hard to overcome what life offers, particularly for a girl child, in a male dominated society. Life conditions were difficult for men and women during the Medieval Ages. Young men’s lives were dictated to by societal needs for family strength. It was a time of darkness and heaviness of heart. Battles were fought, men killed without much thought, women were captured, treated as property much of their lives.
In this story, a pocket of happiness surrounds the de Montfort clan. Alys de Montfort was happy serving Queen Philippa and the king. She learned the skill of herbs from her mother and aided the royal court. When the queen died, she left for Kinwick Castle, her home, with a sad heart.
In her young life, there hadn’t been a man she’d met who made her heart flutter, therefore she didn’t want to marry. Her father and mother didn’t push her. After all, they were able to marry for love and this they wanted for their children. Only one young man had made an impression on twelve-year-old Alys – Christopher Emory. But he, too, would be taken, already betrothed to a woman of the court, Richessa Giffard — a match to strengthen their families.
Alys loved life, and was a happy and compassionate woman. She had come to realize she may not be meant to marry, rather her calling would be to dedicate her life to healing others.
Kit (Christopher) Emory, son of Godwin Emory, Baron of Brentley, had just returned to court after many years in France and soon left to see his mother, Berengarria Emory. His father remained in court as advisor to the king. Kit loved his mother who taught him everything about running Brentwood, his home.
Anxious to see her, he left for home only to find her very ill. Scared for her health, he decided to seek out Alys de Montfort, a young woman he had met at court who was renowned for her medicinal cures. He felt attracted to her, but life moved people as pawns. She left for home and he to France. Would she still be unmarried?
England’s roads are not safe, many prey upon others who have more. Kit gets attacked on his way to Kinwick, all clothing and weaponry taken, and left for dead, a mass of swelling and bruises.
Alys accompanies her young brothers back to their foster home, only to find a man left for dead on the road. No matter who the man is, pauper or noblemen, her compassion does not allow her to retreat without help.
Kit gets returned to Kinwick Castle and is nurtured back to health by Alys and her mother. Kit is frustrated for he’s lost his memory. Alys thinks he looks familiar, but can’t say for sure who he is.
The story holds much warmth and friendship with action-packed scenes. Many-a-time, I found myself actively cheering for Alys, feeling her emotions. She falls in love with a man who doesn’t remember who he is. When she’s positive she knows who he is, she fears to tell him. She knows he’s married. Couldn’t she have a few more days of living a dream?
I’ve read all of this series and have found each of the five stories most entertaining. If you like your Medieval Romances with amazingly honorable knights placed in difficult and challenging circumstances, you’ve found your author!
