At what point does a group of strangers become a community? When young Bendigo Shafter and a ragtag bunch of travelers settle in the rugged Wyoming mountains, they quickly come to depend on a toughness and wisdom many of them never knew they possessed. Led by the beautiful and resourceful widow Ruth Macken, the settlers battle harsh winters, renegade opportunists, and the destructive lure of … destructive lure of gold. Through these brutally demanding experiences, young Bendigo is forged into a man. But when he travels to New York to reclaim the love of Ninon, his childhood sweetheart, Bendigo is faced with new challenges. Will hard-edged instincts, honed from years in the mountains, serve him in the big city? Does Ninon’s heart belong to the lights and glamour of the theater? And if his destiny deems it so, will he be willing to leave the community he toiled so long and hard to build?

Another great book by America’s premier western author.
I read this book many many years ago. I love Louis L’Amour and his precise description of so many parts of our country. I appreciate that there is respect and desire for following laws that had been laid out. I like how his story line implemented realism while still having an amazing and interesting plot. I also loved that the good guy wins!!
It was interesting how he changed the story teller over time.
Love Louis Lanier ALWAYS has great character development.
This novel was written to show the growth in the character of a young man as he matured into an adult and accepted the responsibilities which go with adulthood. It showed how he participated in his preparation for his vocation for life and the kind of man he desired to become.
Top 5 L’Amour.
A good read, though not one of L’Amour’s best books.
Puts you into the mindset of what it was like in the early west.
Tipical of his writing. Very moral characters. A lot of preaching on morality.
excellent characters. well written and easy to read.
I’ve read more Louis L’Amour books than I can count and Bendigo is the quintessential Louis L’Amour character. This book started slow but when it took off, I couldn’t put it down. Bendigo is the pioneer any man would want to pattern himself after. As good “a Louie” as you’ll ever read.
Good historical background as usual
Loved it , anything about the West O like
Much more philosophical than I expect from L’Amour.
Louis L’Amour. What else need be said?
I have loved Louise LaMour books since I was a child learning to read. They are classic & timeless. They will still be great books/stories in a 100 years.
There are many good words of wisdom in this read for both young men (and women) if they would look for them. There are also principals that far to many of our Polatitions could use in governing our Nation, but don’t have the courage to do so.
